The Effect of Teacher Feedback Type on Composition Revision by Learners of Japanese as a Second Language
This study investigated the effect of teacher feedback on Japanese as Second Language (JSL) learners\u27 revision of their own compositions. Eleven participants wrote a letter to an imaginary pen pal. A few days later, they revised their original composition using the given feedback. Half of the students were given form-focused feedback and the other half, content-focused feedback. The original and the revised compositions were analyzed and compared for fluency, accuracy, complexity, and topical structure. Two types of measures were used : linguistic feature analysis and teacher evaluation. It was found that, compared with the originals, revised compositions were better in terms of fluency, accuracy, and complexity, and were more highly rated by teachers. Furthermore, the two types of feedback had different effects on revision : students in the form-focused feedback condition tend to produce more accurate compositions, whereas those given content-focused feedback tend to produce more fluent and more complex compositions. Some implications are drawn for research and practice in classroom L2 writing
IRCS/Subaru Observations of Water in the Inner Coma of Comet 73P-B/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3: Spatially Resolved Rotational Temperatures and Ortho-Para Ratios
Comet 73P-B/Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 was observed with IRCS/Subaru at
geocentric distance of 0.074 AU on UT 10 May 2006. Multiple H2O emission lines
were detected in non-resonant fluorescence near 2.9 microns. No significant
variation in total H2O production rate was found during the (3 hour) duration
of our observations. H2O rotational temperatures and ortho-to-para abundance
ratios were measured for several positions in the coma. The temperatures
extracted from two different time intervals show very similar spatial
distributions. For both, the rotational temperature decreased from ~110 K to
~90 K as the projected distance from the nucleus increased from ~5 to ~30 km.
We see no evidence for OPR change in the coma. The H2O ortho-para ratio is
consistent with the statistical equilibrium value (3.0) for all spatially
resolved measurements. This implies a nuclear spin temperature higher than ~ 45

High-Dispersion Spectroscopic Observations of Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) with the Subaru Telescope
Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) was one of the Oort cloud comets and dynamically new. This comet was broken at its perihelion passage on UT 2013 November 28.1 (at Rh ~ 17 solar radius). We observed the comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) on UT 2013 November 15 with the High Dispersion Spectrograph (HDS) mounted on the Subaru Telescope atop Mauna Kea, Hawaii. Its heliocentric and geocentric distances were 0.601 and 0.898 AU, respectively. We selected the slit size of 0”.5 x 9”.0 on the sky to achieve the spectral resolution of R = 72,000 from 550 to 830 nm. The total exposure time of comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) was 1200 seconds. We detected many emission lines caused from radicals (e.g., CN, C2, NH2), ions (H2O+), atoms ([OI] and Na I) and also many unidentified lines in the spectra. We report the (1) the ortho-to-para abundance ratios (OPRs) of water and ammonia estimated from the high-dispersion spectra of H2O+ and NH2, (2) the green-to-red line ratio of forbidden oxygen emissions, (3) the isotopic ratios of C2 (the carbon isotopic ratio from Swan band) and CN (the carbon and nitrogen isotopic ratios from red band), (4) the sodium-to-continuum ratio of comet C/2012 S1 (ISON). </HTML
Expression of Long-form N-Acetylglucosamine-6-O-Sulfotransferase 1 in Human High Endothelial Venules
Two members of the N-acetylglucosamine-6-O-sulfotransferase (GlcNAc6ST) family, GlcNAc6ST-1 and GlcNAc6ST-2, function in the biosynthesis of 6-sulfo sialyl Lewis X-capped glycoproteins expressed on high endothelial venules (HEVs) in secondary lymphoid organs. Thus, both enzymes play a critical role in L-selectin-expressing lymphocyte homing. Human GlcNAc6ST-1 is encoded by a 1593-bp open reading frame exhibiting two 5' in-frame methionine codons spaced 141 bp apart. Both resemble the consensus sequence for translation initiation. Thus, it has been hypothesized that both long and short forms of GlcNAc6ST-1 may be present, although endogenous expression of either form has not been confirmed in humans. Here, the authors developed an antibody recognizing amino acid residues between the first two human GlcNAc6ST-1 methionines. This antibody specifically recognizes the long form of the enzyme, a finding validated by Western blot analysis and immunofluorescence cytochemistry of HeLa cells misexpressing long and/or short forms of human GlcNAc6ST-1. Using this antibody, the authors carried out immunofluorescence histochemistry of human lymph node tissue sections and found endogenous expression of the long form of the enzyme in human tissue, predominantly in the trans-Golgi network of endothelial cells that form HEVs. Effect of day-to-day variations in adrenal cortex hormone levels on abdominal symptoms
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis is known to be related to abdominal symptoms, and the relationship between abdominal pain and cortisol secretory patterns has been previously investigated using a cross-sectional approach. Here, we investigated the effect of day-to-day variations in salivary cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate levels on abdominal symptoms in healthy individuals.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Eleven college students (4 males and 7 females) participated in this study. The participants were asked to collect their saliva immediately after awakening and before bedtime for eight consecutive days. They also completed a questionnaire about abdominal symptoms before bedtime. The linear mixed model was applied to analyze the effects of the day-by-day variability or the 8-day average adrenal hormone level (at awakening, before bedtime, slope from awakening to bedtime) on abdominal symptoms.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The day-to-day variability of cortisol levels before bedtime was negatively related with loose stool, while the day-to-day variability of the cortisol slope was positively correlated with loose stool. A low 8-day average dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate level at awakening was positively related with frequent bowel movements, loose stool, and long bouts of severe abdominal pain. Likewise, a low 8-day average dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate slope was positively related with long bouts of abdominal pain.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Low cortisol levels before bedtime and a steeper diurnal cortisol slope during the day may be related to bouts of diarrhea during the day.</p
Mechanisms involved in extraterritorial facial pain following cervical spinal nerve injury in rats
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The aim of this study is to clarify the neural mechanisms underlying orofacial pain abnormalities after cervical spinal nerve injury. Nocifensive behavior, phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (pERK) expression and astroglial cell activation in the trigeminal spinal subnucleus caudalis (Vc) and upper cervical spinal dorsal horn (C1-C2) neurons were analyzed in rats with upper cervical spinal nerve transection (CNX).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The head withdrawal threshold to mechanical stimulation of the lateral facial skin and head withdrawal latency to heating of the lateral facial skin were significantly lower and shorter respectively in CNX rats compared to Sham rats. These nocifensive effects were apparent within 1 day after CNX and lasted for more than 21 days. The numbers of pERK-like immunoreactive (LI) cells in superficial laminae of Vc and C1-C2 were significantly larger in CNX rats compared to Sham rats following noxious and non-noxious mechanical or thermal stimulation of the lateral facial skin at day 7 after CNX. Two peaks of pERK-LI cells were observed in Vc and C1-C2 following mechanical and heat stimulation of the lateral face. The number of pERK-LI cells in C1-C2 was intensity-dependent and increased when the mechanical and heat stimulations of the face were increased. The decrements of head withdrawal latency to heat and head withdrawal threshold to mechanical stimulation were reversed during intrathecal (i.t.) administration of MAPK/ERK kinase 1/2 inhibitor PD98059. The area of activated astroglial cells was significantly higher in CNX rats (at day 7 after CNX). The heat and mechanical nocifensive behaviors were significantly depressed and the number of pERK-LI cells in Vc and C1-C2 following noxious and non-noxious mechanical stimulation of the face was also significantly decreased following i.t. administration of the astroglial inhibitor fluoroacetate.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The present findings have demonstrated that mechanical allodynia and thermal hyperalgesia occur in the lateral facial skin after CNX and also suggest that ERK phosphorylation of Vc and C1-C2 neurons and astroglial cell activation are involved in orofacial extraterritorial pain following cervical nerve injury.</p
