    Sulfur Amino Acid Levels and Related Enzyme Activities in Various Brain Regions (and Other Tissues) in Normal Mice and Rolling Mice Nagoya

    The contents of the sulfur amino acids, and the activities of cystathionine beta-synthase and cystathionine gamma-lyase were measured in various regions of the brain and several other tissues in both normal mice and rolling mice Nagoya. The cystathionine content and cystathionine beta-synthase activity were found to be unevenly distributed in various regions of the brain in both normal mice and rolling mice Nagoya, being highest in the cerebellum. Except for the mesencephalon and thalamus plus hypothalamus, the cystathionine content and cystathionine beta-synthase activity in the brain regions of rolling mice Nagoya were much higher than those of the normal mice. The cystathionine content after D,L-propargylglycine treatment was also found to be unevenly distributed in various brain regions in both normal mice and rolling mice Nagoya. The concentrations of cystine and methionine were also higher in all regions of the brain of rolling mice Nagoya than those of normal mice, while the concentration of taurine in the various regions of the brain was almost the same in normal mice and rolling mice Nagoya. Cystathionine beta-synthase and cystathionine gamma-lyase activities in the liver, kidney, and pancreas were almost the same in both the normal mice and rolling mice Nagoya.</p

    Instabilities and turbulence-like dynamics in an oppositely driven binary particle mixture

    Using extensive particle-based simulations, we investigate out-of-equilibrium pattern dynamics in an oppositely driven binary particle system in two dimensions. A surprisingly rich dynamical behavior including lane formation, jamming, oscillation and turbulence-like dynamics is found. The ratio of two friction coefficients is a key parameter governing the stability of lane formation. When the friction coefficient transverse to the external force direction is sufficiently small compared to the longitudinal one, the lane structure becomes unstable to shear-induced disturbances, and the system eventually exhibits a dynamical transition into a novel turbulence-like phase characterized by random convective flows. We numerically construct an out-of-equilibrium phase diagram. Statistical analysis of complex spatio-temporal dynamics of the fully nonlinear turbulence-like phase suggests its apparent reminiscence to the swarming dynamics in certain active matter systems.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in EP

    Usefulness of a Flexible Port for Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery by the Transrectal and Transvaginal Routes

    We developed a flexible port for NOTES which allows the use of conventional forceps for laparoscope-assisted surgery without change. The port is not affected by the location of the through hole in the gastrointestinal tract or vagina which elicits a problem in conventional NOTES, and its length can be adjusted during surgery by cutting the port itself. The port is made of polymer resin with a low friction coefficient. Furthermore, the port walls have a square wave structure which contributes to (1) the prevention of devices, for example, endoscope, from getting stuck at the time of insertion and retrieval, (2) the prevention of port slippage in the surgical opening for port insertion, (3) the prevention of unexpected port removal, (4) the prevention of port bore deformation, and (5) the improvement of port flexibility in the longitudinal direction. We validated the insertion and retrieval capacities of commercially available forceps for laparoscope-assisted surgery and power devices. Furthermore, we used the flexible port to conduct cholecystectomy and partial gastrectomy. We could confirm that the selection of the flexible port diameter according to the device type allowed the smooth insertion and retrieval of the device and that the port produced no air leakage. We affirmed that it is possible to conduct surgery by the cross or parallel method similarly to single port surgery. We considered that the flexible port has a potential of becoming a revolutionary port in NOTES

    Improved sensitivity of magnetic measurements under high pressure in miniature ceramic anvil cell for a commercial SQUID magnetometer

    Two modifications have been made to a miniature ceramic anvil high pressure cell (mCAC) designed for magnetic measurements at pressures up to 12.6 GPa in a commercial superconducting quantum interference (SQUID) magnetometer [N. Tateiwa et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 82, 053906 (2011)., ibid. 83, 053906 (2012)]. Replacing the Cu-Be piston in the former mCAC with a composite piston composed of the Cu-Be and ceramic cylinders reduces the background magnetization significantly smaller at low temperatures, enabling more precise magnetic measurements at low temperatures. A second modification to the mCAC is the utilization of a ceramic anvil with a hollow in the center of the culet surface.     Daily physical activity in patients with chronic glomerulonephritis

    腎炎患者の日常生活活動強度と持久性体力を明らかにするため、本研究を行った。被検者は20歳から61歳の腎炎患者7名である。日常生活活動強度の指標として、連続心拍計を用いて24時間心拍数を測定した。また、持久性体力を評価するため、換気性閾値(Ventilatory Threshold : VT)を測定した。各被験者のVTは、同性、同年齢の健常者の値に対する相対値(%VT)で評価した。被検者の%VTの平均は、93.4±18.6%で、健常者に比べて低下していた。24時間心拍数の平均は、82±8拍/分であった。24時間心拍数のうち、VT時の心拍数を越えるものは、多くても2%でしかなく、腎炎患者の日常生活の大部分は、有酸素運動であった。We examined the intensity of daily physical activityand cardiorespiratory endurance in 7 patients with chronic glomerulonephritis between 20 and 61 years old. To determine the intensity of daily physical activity, the 24-hour heart rate was measured. To evaluate cardiorespiratory endurance, ventilatory threshold oxygen uptake (VT) was measured. VT of each patient was presented as the percentage of the value in sex and age-matched healthy subjects (% VT). The mean % VT was 93.4±18.6% lower than that in the healthy subjects. The mean 24-hour heart rate was 82±8 beats/min. The heart rate over the VT in 24-hour heart rate was at most 2%. In conclusion, metabolism was aerobic in the greater part of their daily lives

    Risk of bleeding and repeated bleeding events in prasugrel-treated patients: a review of data from the Japanese PRASFIT studies

    Prasugrel is a third-generation thienopyridine that achieves potent platelet inhibition with less pharmacological variability than other thienopyridines. However, clinical experience suggests that prasugrel may be associated with a higher risk of de novo and recurrent bleeding events compared with clopidogrel in Japanese patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). In this review, we evaluate the risk of bleeding in Japanese patients treated with prasugrel at the doses (loading/maintenance doses: 20/3.75 mg) adjusted for Japanese patients, evaluate the risk factors for bleeding in Japanese patients, and examine whether patients with a bleeding event are at increased risk of recurrent bleeding. This review covers published data and new analyses of the PRASFIT (PRASugrel compared with clopidogrel For Japanese patIenTs) trials of patients undergoing PCI for acute coronary syndrome or elective reasons. The bleeding risk with prasugrel was similar to that observed with the standard dose of clopidogrel (300/75 mg), including when bleeding events were re-classified using the Bleeding Academic Research Consortium criteria. The pharmacodynamics of prasugrel was not associated with the risk of bleeding events. The main risk factors for bleeding events were female sex, low body weight, advanced age, and presence of diabetes mellitus. Use of a radial puncture site was associated with a lower risk of bleeding during PCI than a femoral puncture site. Finally, the frequency and severity of recurrent bleeding events during continued treatment were similar between prasugrel and clopidogrel. In summary, this review provides important insights into the risk and types of bleeding events in prasugrel-treated patients. Trial registration numbers: JapicCTI-101339 and JapicCTI-111550

    A Prospective Comparison of EUS-Guided FNA Using 25-Gauge and 22-Gauge Needles

    Background and Aims. There are limited data on the differences in diagnostic yield between 25-gauge and 22-gauge EUS-FNA needles. This prospective study compared the difference in diagnostic yield between a 22-gauge and a 25-gauge needle when performing EUS-FNA. Methods. Forty-three patients with intraluminal or extraluminal mass lesions and/or lymphadenopathy were enrolled prospectively. EUS-FNA was performed for each mass lesion using both 25- and 22-gauge needles. The differences in accuracy rate, scoring of needle visibility, ease of puncture and quantity of obtained specimen were evaluated. Results. The overall accuracy of 22- and 25-gauge needle was similar at 81% and 76% respectively (N.S). Likewise the visibility scores of both needles were also similar. Overall the quantity of specimen obtained higher with the 22-gauge needle (score: 1.64 vs. P < .001). However the 25-gauge needle was significantly superior to the 22-gauge needle in terms of ease of puncture (score: 1.9 vs. 1.29, P < .001) and in the quantity of specimen in the context of pancreatic mass EUS-FNA (score: 1.8 vs. 1.58, P < .05). Conclusion. The 22-gauge and 25-gauge needles have similar overall diagnostic yield. The 25-gauge needle appeared superior in the subset of patients with hard lesions and pancreatic masses
