Jenseits der 'Neuen Mitte' Die Annaeherung der PDS an die SPD seit der Bundestagswahl 1998

'Das strategische Ziel der PDS ist es gegenwaertig, sich als normale politische Kraft auf allen politischen Ebenen zu etablieren. Die langfristig bruechige Rolle als Ostpartei kann nur dadurch kompensiert werden, dass sich die PDS als gesamtdeutsche linke Fluegelpartei profiliert. Dazu ist aber die Einbindung in Regierungskoalitionen noetig, die ihr auf Bundes- wie auf Landesebene nur die SPD ermoeglichen kann. Die Analyse schildert die wichtigsten Stadien der Annaeherung der PDS an die SPD seit der Bundestagswahl sowie die Reaktionen von SPD und teilweise auch von Buendnis 90/ Die Gruenen darauf. Dies zeigt, dass einer engeren Einbindung der PDS seitens der anderen Akteure immer weniger Widerstand entgegen gebracht wird. Im Hinblick auf die Bundestagswahl 2002 wird deutlich, dass die PDS-Fuehrung grosse Anstrengungen unternimmt, diese Annaeherung weiter voranzutreiben, um die Chancen fuer eine Beteiligung an der Macht in der Bundespolitik weiter zu erhoehen.' Christian-democratic and center-right parties in Europe and North America Selected perspectives

'Most western governments in the mid-1990s were made up of social democratic or center-left parties and politicians. Only in very recent months has the tide seemed to turn again toward a new predominance of center-right governments in many of these countries. Many observers in the media seemed either stunned or puzzled by this development, whereas several social scientists have pointed out that this would not be anything less than a return to a historical state of normalcy. According to classic right-left scales of measuring political attitudes, one would have to concede that center or center-right parties have held power longer in the 20th century than others. But still a certain uneasiness leads to comments such as: is this really a new 'tide' or just a short interval? Are not most governments, especially in Europe, still best characterized as being more or less social democratic, pro-welfare state? Have not the ideological differences between the parties perceived by the electorate become smaller and smaller, creating if not a permanent electoral crisis than at least an identity crisis for the center-right? Has the wish to be governed by some kind of politician of the 'center' and the urge to belong to some kind of center ground, a so-called third way, become overwhelming? What room is left for the center-right? Do these developments require a reassessment of contemporary center-right politics and parties? The Academy for Politics and Current Affairs of the Hanns Seidel Foundation held a joint conference together with the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, in September 2000 where several perspectives on present-day center-right politics in Europe and North America were discussed. The meeting was hosted by the College of William and Mary and attracted a number of highly renowned specialists from several countries. Some of the presentations made at this conference have been revised into the papers in this volume. Even though this is not a comprehensive account of all the conference proceedings, we nevertheless hope that this selection reflects the scope and depth of the discussions.'
