    R-parity violation: Hide & Seek

We point out that, if R-parity is broken spontaneously, the neutralino can decay to the final state majoron plus neutrino, which from the experimental point of view is indistinguishable from the standard missing momentum signal of supersymmetry. We identify the regions of parameter space where this decay mode is dominant and show that they are independent of R-parity conserving SUSY parameters. Thus, (a) only very weak limits on R-parity violating couplings can be derived from the observation of missing momentum events and (b) at future collider experiments huge statistics might be necessary to establish that R-parity indeed is broken. Parameter combinations which give calculated relic neutralino density larger than the measured dark matter density in case of conserved R-parity are valid points in this scenario and their phenomenology at the LHC deserves to be studied.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures; ref. added; matches published version (title changed in the published version

Double electron capture in 156Dy, 162Er and 168Yb

The double electron capture half-lives of 156Dy, 162Er and 168Yb are evaluated using the pseudo SU(3) model, which describes ground and excited bands as well as their B(E2) and B(M1) transition strengths in remarkable agreement with experiment. The best candidate for experimental detection is the decay 156Dy -> 156Gd, with tau{1/2} (0+{gs} --> 0+{gs}) = 2.74 E22 yrs and tau{1/2} (0+{gs} --> 0+{1}) = 8.31 E24 yrs.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure. EDIN0621B Sizing and Performance Results

    Get PDF
A launch vehicle was investigated for the Solar Power Satellite System (SPS). The technology level assumed for sizing was that predicted for 1995. The candidate concept designated EDIN0621B is a two stage, winged, series burn vehicle capable of delivering a one million pound payload to low earth orbit. A propulsion system was sized to provide payload circularization at apogee. Any docking, rendezvous or additional Delta V requirements were assumed to be integral to the payload. The EDIN0621B concept used LOX/C3H8 booster engines and uprated Shuttle System main engines in the upper stage. Gross liftoff weight of the baseline vehicle was 18,367,853 pounds. The booster stage required thirteen engines; the upper stage required seven. The vehicle was designed to a liftoff thrust to weight ratio of 1.3
