    We observed four fused teeth of the mandibular lateral incisor and the mandibular canine on three patients. In Case 1, both sides of the teeth were fused to the tooth crown and root. From observation of dental radiography, we were able to confirm that the fusion area of these teeth reached to the dentin. In Case 2, the tooth crown was divided into two parts, mesial and distal, and was fused to the tooth root. From observation of dental radiography, the fusion area of the tooth was confirmed to reach to the dentin. In Case 3, we were able to confirm from observation of plaster model that the tooth crown was fused completely. The appearance rate of fused permanent teeth was 0.3%. We thought that the abnormal cases appeared as a result of many embryological phenomena. We propose that the abnormal cases should be reported along with the detail data, and not thought to be rare

    Classifying Microscopic Images of Reactive Lymphocytosis Using Two-Step Tandem AI Models

    The practical applications of automatic recognition and categorization technology for next-generation systems are desired in the clinical laboratory. We approached the identification of reactive lymphocytosis using artificial intelligence (AI) technology and studied its clinical usefulness for blood smear screening. This study created one- and two-step AI models for the identification of reactive lymphocytosis. The ResNet-101 model was applied for deep learning. The original image set for supervised AI training consisted of 5765 typical nucleated blood cell images. The subjects for clinical assessment were 25 healthy cases, 25 erythroblast cases, and 25 reactive lymphocytosis cases. The total accuracy (mean ± standard deviation) of the one- and two-step models were 0.971 ± 0.047 and 0.977 ± 0.024 in healthy, 0.938 ± 0.040 and 0.978 ± 0.018 in erythroblast, and 0.856 ± 0.056 and 0.863 ± 0.069 in reactive lymphocytosis cases, respectively. The two-step AI model showed a sensitivity of 0.960 and a specificity of 1.000 between healthy and reactive lymphocytosis cases. As our two-step tandem AI model showed high performance for identifying reactive lymphocytosis in blood smear screening, we plan to apply this method to the development of AI models to differentiate reactive and neoplastic lymphocytosis

    Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans from salmon nasal cartilage inhibit angiogenesis

    Because cartilage lacks nerves, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels, it is thought to contain factors that inhibit the growth and development of those tissues. Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs) are a major extracellular component in cartilage. CSPGs contribute to joint flexibility and regulate extracellular signaling via their attached glycosaminoglycan, chondroitin sulfate (CS). CS and CSPG inhibit axonal regeneration; however, their role in blood vessel formation is largely unknown. To clarify the function of CSPG in blood vessel formation, we tested salmon nasal cartilage proteoglycan (PG), a member of the aggrecan family of CSPG, for endothelial capillary-like tube formation. Treatment with salmon PG inhibited endothelial cell adhesion and in vitro tube formation. The anti-angiogenic activity was derived from CS in the salmon PG but not the core protein. Salmon PG also reduced matrix metalloproteinase expression and inhibited angiogenesis in the chick chorioallantoic membrane. All of these data support an anti-angiogenic role for CSPG in cartilage

    Comminuted distal humeral fracture treated using the Ilizarov technique in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis

    The goal of treatment for distal humeral fractures in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is to obtain sufficient bone union and good elbow function. However, treating comminuted distal humeral fractures in patients with RA and osteoporosis is challenging. We present the case of a 58-year-old woman with RA and osteoporosis who suffered a comminuted distal humeral fracture and was successfully treated with the Ilizarov technique. The Ilizarov technique is minimally invasive compared with conventional open surgery, can obtain good stabilization, and allows earlier rehabilitation, even if the fractured bone is severely osteoporotic. The patient exhibited good elbow function and alignment at the final follow-up examination (18 postoperative months). To the best of our knowledge, the present case is the first in which a comminuted distal humeral fracture in a patient with RA and severe osteoporosis was successfully treated with an Ilizarov external fixator.
