    SAFETY ASPECTS OF KARATE AS PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND AN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY

    The present study reviewed karate injuries sustained during regular training, as well as competition, to examine the safety aspects of karate as physical education and an extracurricular activity. Karate injuries during regular exercise are usually minor, most commonly contusions, bruises, superficial scratches, sprains, and/or strains. The head/neck, and/or extremities were the most commonly injured regions. If karate is included as one of the activities in the school physical education curriculum, three hours or less per week training to practice basic techniques, prearranged-sparring, and kata, without free-sparring, is recommended. If free-sparring is allowed as practice in physical education classes and/or as an extracurricular activity, teachers or instructors should stress the importance of controlling the techniques and using noncontact forms of karate.  Article visualizations

    Effects of the Cultivation Method on the Characteristics or Gene Expression Profiles of Aspergillus oryzae Using mCD or DPY Media

    We used modified Czapek-Dox (mCD) or dextrin-peptone-yeast extract (DPY) media to cultivate a filamentous fungus, Aspergillus oryzae IAM 2706 by three different cultivation methods, i.e., shaking-flask culture (SFC), agar-plate culture (APC), and membrane-surface liquid culture (MSLC), to identify the differences in cultivation behaviors and gene transcriptional profiles. The fungi cultivated by APC or MSLC secreted a greater number of different proteins/enzymes in larger quantities compared with fungi cultivated by SFC, particularly when DPY medium was used. In particular, the amounts of protease secreted by fungi cultivated via MSLC or APC were much greater compared with SFC. When mCD medium was used, α-amylase activity was barely detectable in all cultures while the activity was detected in MSLC and APC in a quantity that was several times higher than that in SFC using DPY medium. SDS-PAGE analysis and N-terminal amino acid sequences confirmed 6 proteins in the culture supernatants when DPY medium was used. Among these proteins oryzin (an alkaline protease) and α-amylase were detected at much higher levels in APC and MSLC compared with SFC, which was consistent with the measured activity of the secreted enzymes. However, when mCD medium was used, only oryzin was detected in significant amounts in MSLC and APC. Microarray analyses of the fungi cultivated by SFC, APC or MSLC using either mCD or DPY media indicated that the gene transcriptional profile of the MSLC sample was similar to that of the APC sample but different from that of the SFC sample. When mCD medium was used, most of the genes that were up-regulated 10-folds or greater in the MSLC sample relative to the SFC sample were unknown or predicted proteins. Transcription of the oryzin gene was only slightly up-regulated in the MSLC sample while transcription of the α-amylase gene was slightly down-regulated. On the other hand, when DPY medium was used, many known genes including the oryzin gene were up-regulated in the MSLC sample versus the SFC sample

    Web access monitoring mechanism for Android webview

    In addition to conventional web browsers, WebView is used to display web content on Android. WebView is a component that enables the display of web content in mobile applications, and is extensively used. As WebView displays web content without having to redirect the user to web browsers, there is the possibility that unauthorized web access may be performed secretly via Web-View, and information in Android may be stolen or tampered with. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor and analyze web access via WebView, particularly because attacks exploiting WebView have been reported. However, there is no mechanism for monitoring web access viaWebView. In this work, the goals are to monitor web access via WebView and to analyze mobile applications using Web-View. To achieve these goals, we propose a web access monitoring mechanism for Android WebView. In this paper, the design and implementation of a mechanism that does not require any modifications to the Android Framework and Linux kernel are presented for the Chromium Android System WebView app. In addition, this paper presents evaluation results for the proposed mechanism

    Adenomyoepithelial adenosis associated with breast cancer: a case report and review of the literature

    Adenomyoepithelial adenosis of the breast is an extremely rare type of adenosis. We herein present the case of a 35-year-old woman, who presented with a small painless hard lump and elastic soft induration of 5 cm in diameter in her left breast. Clinical examination and diagnostic workup were suggestive of a breast carcinoma, and a modified radical mastectomy and sentinel node biopsy were performed. Histopathological examination revealed adenomyoepithelial adenosis along with fibrocystic change and small invasive ductal carcinoma, slightly away from the adenosis. The presented case was thought to be initial-stage adenomyoepithelial adenosis and independently developing breast cancer. From a review of five reported cases of adenomyoepithelial adenosis, complete resection of the tumor and coexisting malignant disease may be recommended, owing to the tendency to develop breast cancer or malignant adenomyoepithelioma, or recurrence.     EFFECTS OF PLAYING BADMINTON ON BONE PROPERTIES USING CALCANEAL QUANTITATIVE ULTRASOUND: A PRELIMINARY STUDY

    Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the effects of playing badminton on calcaneal bone properties. Methods: Eleven sedentary collegiate women were recruited. They played badminton for 75 min, 2 days per week, for 10 weeks. The right calcaneus was assessed to measure speed of sound and broadband ultrasound attenuation using a quantitative ultrasound device. A stiffness index was derived from both the speed of sound and broadband ultrasound attenuation. Results: After the training period, broadband ultrasound attenuation and stiffness index did not change significantly, whereas speed of sound significantly increased, Conclusion: The results indicate that playing badminton influences calcaneal bone properties in a positive manner.  Article visualizations
