Iron Emission Lines on the Galactic Ridge Observed with Suzaku
In order to elucidate origin of the Galactic Ridge X-ray Emission, we
analyzed Suzaku data taken at various regions along the Galactic plane and
studied their Fe-K emission line features. Suzaku resolved the Fe line complex
into three narrow lines at ~6.4 keV,~6.7 keV and ~6.97 keV, which are K-lines
from neutral (or low-ionized), He-like, and H-like iron ions, respectively. The
6.7 keV line is clearly seen in all the observed regions and its longitudinal
distribution is consistent with that determined from previous observations. The
6.4 keV emission line was also found in various Galactic plane regions (b~0).
Differences in flux ratios of the 6.4 keV/6.7 keV and 6.97 keV/6.7 keV lines
between the Galactic plane and the Galactic center regions are studied and its
implication is discussed.Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ Suzaku 3rd special issu
High-temperature thermoelectric properties of the double-perovskite ruthenium oxide (SrLa)ErRuO
We have prepared polycrystalline samples of (SrLa)ErRuO
and (SrLa)YRuO, and have measured the resistivity, Seebeck
coefficient, thermal conductivity, susceptibility and x-ray absorption in order
to evaluate the electronic states and thermoelectric properties of the doped
double-perovskite ruthenates. We have observed a large Seebeck coefficient of
-160 V/K and a low thermal conductivity of 7 mW/cmK for =0.1 at 800 K
in air. These two values are suitable for efficient oxide thermoelectrics,
although the resistivity is still as high as 1 cm. From the
susceptibility and x-ray absorption measurements, we find that the doped
electrons exist as Ru in the low spin state. On the basis of the
measured results, the electronic states and the conduction mechanism are
discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, J. Appl. Phys. (accepted
Left atrial metastasis of renal cell carcinoma: a case report and review of the literature
Background: Cardiac metastasis of renal cell carcinoma is an exceptional event, particularly when there is lack of inferior vena cava involvement. Indeed, only a few cases have been reported worldwide thus far. Moreover, discussion of treatment and follow-up strategies for cardiac metastasis of renal cell carcinoma is important because of the high risk of sudden death. Case presentation. We report the case of a 75-year-old Japanese man with metastatic tumor in the left atrium from renal cell carcinoma. He had a history of right renal cell carcinoma, for which he had undergone hand-assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy. Lung and bone metastases were detected after nephrectomy, and treatment with interferon-alpha was initiated. After disease progression, he was treated concurrently with targeted molecular therapy and radiotherapy for bone metastasis. After these therapies, a 42 × 24 mm mass was found on transthoracic echocardiography in left atrium without involvement of the right atrium or inferior vena cava. The provisional diagnosis was metastatic mass or myxoma, and surgical resection was performed. Histopathological examination led to a final diagnosis of metastatic tumor from clear cell renal cell carcinoma. Conclusion: Cardiac metastasis, metastasis to the left atrium in particular, is rare in patients with renal cell carcinoma. In our study, surgery of the cardiac mass was effective to avoid sudden death and quality of life decline resulting from heart failure. We describe this case and review cardiac metastasis of renal cell carcinoma
Induction of macrophage migration inhibitory factor precedes the onset of acute tonsillitis.
We investigated the serum macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) levels of palmoplantar pustulosis patients, before and after the tonsillar provocation test. Higher serum MIF levels of palmoplantar pustulosis patients were decreased after the tonsillar provocation test (n=29). To confirm these phenomena, two patients with acute tonsillitis had their changes in body temperature, C-reactive protein (CRP) and serum MIF levels examined during the course of their illness. Surprisingly, increased MIF preceded fever and CRP elevation, and MIF subsequently decreased at the onset of fever and CRP elevation. Since MIF is an initiator of other proinflammatory cytokines, we suggest that the induction of MIF may precede other inflammatory conditions
Type A Behavior Pattern and Obesity in Japanese Workers: A Cross-Sectional Study
Obesity is associated with personality. The Type A behavior pattern (TABP), which is characterized by hostility and competitive behavior, is related to psychological stress. However, the relationship between obesity and the TABP has not been examined. This study aimed to examine the relationship between obesity and the Type A behavior pattern in 3,099 Japanese workers. The Type A behavior pattern was measured via the Maeda Type A Behavior Checklist. Data were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression adjusted for age, being current smokers, heavy drinker, lack of exercise, occupation, and rapid eating. The multivariate odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for obesity associated with TABP was 1.55 (1.13 to 2.13) in men. Regarding other variables, age, lack of exercise, and rapid eating were associated with obesity in men. The multivariate odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for obesity associated with TABP was 1.27 (0.81 to 2.02) in women. Regarding other variables, age andrapid eating were associated with obesity in women. The findings suggest that the Type A behavior pattern was associated with increased obesity prevalence in Japanese men. People with TABP tend to eat larger portions during mealtimes repeatedly by rapid eating; it is possible that eating large portions may lead to an increase weight in men with TABP
