Extreme self-organization in networks constructed from gene expression data

We study networks constructed from gene expression data obtained from many types of cancers. The networks are constructed by connecting vertices that belong to each others' list of K-nearest-neighbors, with K being an a priori selected non-negative integer. We introduce an order parameter for characterizing the homogeneity of the networks. On minimizing the order parameter with respect to K, degree distribution of the networks shows power-law behavior in the tails with an exponent of unity. Analysis of the eigenvalue spectrum of the networks confirms the presence of the power-law and small-world behavior. We discuss the significance of these findings in the context of evolutionary biological processes.Comment: 4 pages including 3 eps figures, revtex. Revisions as in published versio

Vision based UAV Navigation through Narrow Passages

This research paper presents a novel approach for navigating a micro UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) through narrow passages using only its onboard camera feed and a PID control system. The proposed method uses edge detection and homography techniques to extract the key features of the passage from the camera feed and then employs a tuned PID controller to guide the UAV through and out of the passage while avoiding collisions with the walls. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a series of experiments were conducted using a micro-UAV navigating in and out of a custom-built test environment (constrained rectangular box). The results demonstrate that the system is able to successfully guide the UAV through the passages while avoiding collisions with the walls.Comment: Currently under review in IEEE CASE 202

Visualization tool for the TechNET planning system

The work described in this document has been carried out in the frame of the @LIS TechNET project, which aims to create a live network across Europe and Latin America as a new, virtual, and interactive learning environment, based on software-agent technology. The purpose of this document is to describe a visualization tool developed for the TechNET's planning system. As background, this document also briefly describes what mixed-initiative planning is.Postprint (published version

Context-NER : Contextual Phrase Generation at Scale

NLP research has been focused on NER extraction and how to efficiently extract them from a sentence. However, generating relevant context of entities from a sentence has remained under-explored. In this work we introduce the task Context-NER in which relevant context of an entity has to be generated. The extracted context may not be found exactly as a substring in the sentence. We also introduce the EDGAR10-Q dataset for the same, which is a corpus of 1,500 publicly traded companies. It is a manually created complex corpus and one of the largest in terms of number of sentences and entities (1 M and 2.8 M). We introduce a baseline approach that leverages phrase generation algorithms and uses the pre-trained BERT model to get 33% ROUGE-L score. We also do a one shot evaluation with GPT-3 and get 39% score, signifying the hardness and future scope of this task. We hope that addition of this dataset and our study will pave the way for further research in this domain.Comment: 12 pages, 2 Figures, 1 Algorithm, 8 Tables. Fine needle aspiration cytology in head and neck swellings: a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure

    Get PDF
Background: Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) is a very simple, quick, inexpensive and minimally invasive technique used to diagnose different types of swellings like lymph node, thyroid, soft tissue and salivary glands in head and neck region. These swellings frequently encountered in general practice. It may be inflammatory, reactive, benign or malignant lesion. The objective was to assess the frequency and incidence of different sites, age, sex and distribution of reactive, benign and malignant lesion. Methods: A prospective study was conducted at Geetanjali Medical College & Hospital, from January 2014 to August 2014.Fineneedle aspiration diagnosis was correlated with details of relevant clinical findings and investigations. Patients aged between 1 and 75 years were included in the study. A total of 200 patients were enrolled in the study with their name, age, sex, profession, address and contact. Results: Out of 200 fineneedle aspiration procedures 42% were of lymph node, 18.5% were of thyroid, 15.5% from salivary gland, 8% from soft tissue, scalp and forehead swellings and 5.5% from lips and oral cavity lesion. Lymphnodes were the commonest organ involved in which reactive were 16% and 15% granulomatous lesion. There were 2.5% cases of non specific inflammatory lesion from lymph nodes. Conclusions: Our study found that FNAC is simple, quick, inexpensive and minimally invasive technique to diagnose different types of head and neck swellings. It could differentiate the infective and benign process from neoplastic one and avoids unnecessary surgeries and expenses.

HeadUp: A Low-Cost Solution for Tracking Head Movement of Children with Cerebral Palsy Using IMU

    Get PDF
Cerebral palsy (CP) is a common reason for human motor ability limitations caused before birth, through infancy or early childhood. Poor head control is one of the most important problems in children with level IV CP and level V CP, which can affect many aspects of children’s lives. The current visual assessment method for measuring head control ability and cervical range of motion (CROM) lacks accuracy and reliability. In this paper, a HeadUp system that is based on a low-cost, 9-axis, inertial measurement unit (IMU) is proposed to capture and evaluate the head control ability for children with CP. The proposed system wirelessly measures CROM in frontal, sagittal, and transverse planes during ordinary life activities. The system is designed to provide real-time, bidirectional communication with an Euler-based, sensor fusion algorithm (SFA) to estimate the head orientation and its control ability tracking. The experimental results for the proposed SFA show high accuracy in noise reduction with faster system response. The system is clinically tested on five typically developing children and five children with CP (age range: 2–5 years). The proposed HeadUp system can be implemented as a head control trainer in an entertaining way to motivate the child with CP to keep their head up

A comparative study between flipped classroom and traditional lecture-based classroom in first year medical students

    Get PDF
Introduction: Flipped classroom is a new pedagogical model in which students are provided with study resource material to develop a basic understanding of the topic before class, and in-class precious time is used for learner-centric activities. Accordingly the study objectives were to compare the effect of flipped and traditional classroom teaching method and to determine the student’s perception of flipped and traditional teaching method.Method: This was a non-randomized experimental study. A detailed multiple choice question based test was used to assess the knowledge gain. Another structured questionnaire on students’ perception on flipped classroom teaching and traditional teaching technique was used for both the groups. Results: A total of 112 students participated in this study. The mean assessment scores in the flipped and traditional classroom were not statistically significant. We observed in the current study that the qualitative response was better as compared to quantitative response. Conclusion: As per our qualitative observation, a hybrid of both traditional and flipped classroom teaching method can be used in the transition period until the acceptance for new innovative methods increase. Long term learning gain may be attained by improving motivation and engagement of students in learning process
