Sclera solar diameter observations
Focus is given to possible variations in solar luminosity and accurate methods of monitoring it. Aside from direct bolometry, one methodology for this type of research makes use of measurements of the solar diameter and limb darkening function as indirect indicators of the solar luminosity. XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL analysis of the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transient IGR J17354-3255
We present the results of combined INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton observations of
the supergiant fast X-ray transient (SFXT) IGR J173543255. Three XMM-Newton
observations of lengths 33.4 ks, 32.5 ks and 21.9 ks were undertaken, the first
an initial pointing to identify the correct source in the field of view and the
latter two performed around periastron. Simultaneous INTEGRAL observations
across of the orbital cycle were analysed but the source was neither
detected by IBIS/ISGRI nor by JEM-X. The XMM-Newton light curves display a
range of moderately bright X-ray activity but there are no particularly strong
flares or outbursts in any of the three observations. We show that the spectral
shape measured by XMM-Newton can be fitted by a consistent model throughout the
observation, suggesting that the observed flux variations are driven by
obscuration from a wind of varying density rather than changes in accretion
mode. The simultaneous INTEGRAL data rule out simple extrapolation of the
simple powerlaw model beyond the XMM-Newton energy range.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, This article has been accepted for publication

Length Scales of Acceleration for Locally Isotropic Turbulence
Length scales are determined that govern the behavior at small separations of
the correlations of fluid-particle acceleration, viscous force, and pressure
gradient. The length scales and an associated universal constant are quantified
on the basis of published data. The length scale governing pressure spectra at
high wave numbers is discussed. Fluid-particle acceleration correlation is
governed by two length scales; one arises from the pressure gradient, the other

Colloquium: Hidden Order, Superconductivity, and Magnetism -- The Unsolved Case of URu2Si2
This Colloquium reviews the 25 year quest for understanding the continuous
(second-order) mean-field-like phase transition occurring at 17.5 K in URu2Si2.
About ten years ago, the term hidden order (HO) was coined and has since been
utilized to describe the unknown ordered state, whose origin cannot be
disclosed by conventional solid-state probes, such as x rays, neutrons, or
muons. HO is able to support superconductivity at lower temperatures (Tc ~ 1.5
K), and when magnetism is developed with increasing pressure both the HO and
the superconductivity are destroyed. Other ways of probing the HO are via
Rh-doping and very large magnetic fields. During the last few years a variety
of advanced techniques have been tested to probe the HO state and their
attempts will be summarized. A digest of recent theoretical developments is
also included. It is the objective of this Colloquium to shed additional light

Word Embeddings for Entity-annotated Texts
Learned vector representations of words are useful tools for many information
retrieval and natural language processing tasks due to their ability to capture
lexical semantics. However, while many such tasks involve or even rely on named
entities as central components, popular word embedding models have so far
failed to include entities as first-class citizens. While it seems intuitive
that annotating named entities in the training corpus should result in more
intelligent word features for downstream tasks, performance issues arise when
popular embedding approaches are naively applied to entity annotated corpora.
Not only are the resulting entity embeddings less useful than expected, but one
also finds that the performance of the non-entity word embeddings degrades in
comparison to those trained on the raw, unannotated corpus. In this paper, we
investigate approaches to jointly train word and entity embeddings on a large
corpus with automatically annotated and linked entities. We discuss two
distinct approaches to the generation of such embeddings, namely the training
of state-of-the-art embeddings on raw-text and annotated versions of the
corpus, as well as node embeddings of a co-occurrence graph representation of
the annotated corpus. We compare the performance of annotated embeddings and
classical word embeddings on a variety of word similarity, analogy, and
clustering evaluation tasks, and investigate their performance in
entity-specific tasks. Our findings show that it takes more than training
popular word embedding models on an annotated corpus to create entity
embeddings with acceptable performance on common test cases. Based on these
results, we discuss how and when node embeddings of the co-occurrence graph

Alternatives for jet engine control
The development of models of tensor type for a digital simulation of the quiet, clean safe engine (QCSE) gas turbine engine; the extension, to nonlinear multivariate control system design, of the concepts of total synthesis which trace their roots back to certain early investigations under this grant; the role of series descriptions as they relate to questions of scheduling in the control of gas turbine engines; the development of computer-aided design software for tensor modeling calculations; further enhancement of the softwares for linear total synthesis, mentioned above; and calculation of the first known examples using tensors for nonlinear feedback control are discussed
Scientific investigations in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea during the 1974-1975 Calypso cruise, parts 1 and 2
The distribution and concentrations of the standing crop of phytoplankton and nutrient salts in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea were investigated to provide ground truth for correlating temperature and chlorophyll-a measurements with observations from NASA U-2 aircraft equipped with specially designed sensors for measuring ocean color phenomena. The physical, chemical, and biological data obtained is summarized. Sampling procedures and methods used for determining plant pigments, species composition of phytoplankton, nutrient salt analysis, and the euphotic zones are described
Gaussian-Charge Polarizable Interaction Potential for Carbon Dioxide
A number of simple pair interaction potentials of the carbon dioxide molecule
are investigated and found to underestimate the magnitude of the second virial
coefficient in the temperature interval 220 K to 448 K by up to 20%. Also the
third virial coefficient is underestimated by these models. A rigid,
polarizable, three-site interaction potential reproduces the experimental
second and third virial coefficients to within a few percent. It is based on
the modified Buckingham exp-6 potential, an anisotropic Axilrod-Teller
correction and Gaussian charge densities on the atomic sites with an inducible
dipole at the center of mass. The electric quadrupole moment, polarizability
and bond distances are set to equal experiment. Density of the fluid at 200 and
800 bars pressure is reproduced to within some percent of observation over the
temperature range 250 K to 310 K. The dimer structure is in passable agreement
with electronically resolved quantum-mechanical calculations in the literature,
as are those of the monohydrated monomer and dimer complexes using the
polarizable GCPM water potential. Qualitative agreement with experiment is also
obtained, when quantum corrections are included, for the relative stability of
the trimer conformations, which is not the case for the pair potentials.Comment: Error in the long-range correction fixed and three-body dispersion
