    Community context of retiree migration intentions

    Current research into retiree migration has focused on identifying geographical patterns of migration and on analysing the personal characteristics of retirees. Very few studies have investigated the community context of retiree migration. This research explores associations between community characteristics and retiree migration intentions through a study centered on small towns located in Northwestern Ontario. It makes a contribution to existing retiree migration literature through the development and application of a theoretical perspective on community retiree migration, based on Rose's concept of an aging subculture and Breton's concept of institutional completeness. Findings indicate that there is a strong association between community characteristics and retiree migration intentions. Retirees appear to intend staying in those communities which have a complex set of community characteristics. Conversely, retirees appear to intend leaving communities which are less developed

    Health Effects of Indoor-Air Benzene in Anchorage Residences: A Study of Indoor-Air Quality in Houses with Attached Garages

    Benzene is a known carcinogen. It affects white blood cells; it causes leukemia and aplastic anemia. It may also affect the immune system which is dependent on white blood cells.1 It has been removed from all household products, but it is still present in gasoline. Alaskan gasoline is particularly high in benzene (>5%). Gasoline refined in Alaska has high concentrations of benzene and other the aromatic compounds as much as 50% aromatics by volume. Leaving the aromatics in the gasoline helps cars start in the cold, but it also puts high concentrations of benzene in both the ambient and indoor air. We already knew from previous work done in Alaska by Bernard Goldstein in Valdez2 and the Anchorage Department of Health and Human Services in Anchorage3 that people were exposed to high ambient levels of benzene in the winter, and that there were high indoor benzene concentrations in homes with attached garages if the garage was used to store gasoline or gasoline powered engines. Benzene does not bioaccumulate in the body as dioxin or some pesticides do. But are its effects cumulative? Does a little dose of benzene everyday have the same effect as a large dose over less time? Benzene reduces CD4 cells in a dose-response manner at workplace concentrations less than 1 ppm (OSHA 8-hour exposure limit) in workers.4 People who live in homes with high benzene concentrations may be exposed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There have been no studies of health effects of such environmental exposure to benzene. This study was done to determine three things: 1. What percentage of Anchorage homes with attached garages had high levels of indoor benzene? 2. Were the high levels of indoor benzene affecting the health of the residents? 3.     Tuning accessibility of referring expressions in situated dialogue

    Accessibility theory associates more complex referring expressions with less accessible referents. Felicitous referring expressions should reflect accessibility from the addressee's perspective, which may be difficult for speakers to assess incrementally. If mechanisms shared by perception and production help interlocutors align internal representations, then dyads with different roles and different things to say should profit less from alignment. We examined introductory mentions of on-screen shapes within a joint task for effects of access to the addressee's attention, of players’ actions and of speakers’ roles. Only speakers’ actions affected the form of referring expression and only different role dyads made egocentric use of actions hidden from listeners. Analysis of players’ gaze around referring expressions confirmed this pattern; only same role dyads coordinated attention as the accessibility theory predicts. The results are discussed within a model distributing collaborative effort under the constraints of joint tasks

    An expert panel was convened in September 2019 by The International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) to develop a definition for fermented foods and to describe their role in the human diet. Although these foods have been consumed for thousands of years, they are receiving increased attention among biologists, nutritionists, technologists, clinicians and consumers. Despite this interest, inconsistencies related to the use of the term ‘fermented’ led the panel to define fermented foods and beverages as “foods made through desired microbial growth and enzymatic conversions of food components”. This definition, encompassing the many varieties of fermented foods, is intended to clarify what is (and is not) a fermented food. The distinction between fermented foods and probiotics is further clarified. The panel also addressed the current state of knowledge on the safety, risks and health benefits, including an assessment of the nutritional attributes and a mechanistic rationale for how fermented foods could improve gastrointestinal and general health. The latest advancements in our understanding of the microbial ecology and systems biology of these foods were discussed. Finally, the panel reviewed how fermented foods are regulated and discussed efforts to include them as a separate category in national dietary guidelines

    Outcomes from a collaborative project developing and evaluating a community rehabilitation worker program for Northwestern Ontario First Nations

    Introduction: Major inequities exist in levels of health and wellbeing, availability, and access to healthcare services between seniors of Indigenous and non-Indigenous background in Ontario. First Nations elders are 45-55% more frail than the average senior in Ontario. Additionally, needed rehabilitation services are not easily accessible or available in the first language of most First Nations elders within their home communities. A literature review demonstrated community-based rehabilitation assistant models had been successfully developed and implemented in regions facing similar equity and access challenges. Building on these findings, a needs assessment was conducted to capture unique needs and requirements in Northwestern Ontario relating to rehabilitation among First Nations elders. Methods: The needs assessment resulted in four First Nations, three Indigenous health organizations, three rehabilitation health organizations, and two academic institutions iteratively developing and evaluating curriculum for a Community Rehabilitation Worker (CRW) program in treaty territories 5, 9, and Robinson-Superior. The goal of the program is to train local CRWs, familiar with local languages and cultures, to provide rehabilitative services that support ageing in place, health, wellbeing, and quality of life for First Nations elders. The study employed a community participatory action research approach aligning with the OCAP® (Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession) framework for working with Indigenous populations. Seventeen community partners were active participants in the program development, evaluation, and adaptation of the CRW curriculum. Feedback was received through advisory committee meetings, surveys, and individual and group interviews. Results: All 101 participants agreed, across all curriculum modules, that (1) the time allotment was realistic; (2) instructional materials, activities, and resources were appropriate and easy to understand; (3) evaluation activities accurately measured learning; and (4) participants identifying as Indigenous felt that Indigenous culture was adequately reflected. The qualitative findings highlighted the importance of incorporating culture, spirituality, traditions, local language use, and reintegration of First Nations elders into traditional activities and community activities for both the CRW curriculum and rehabilitation efforts. The need for locally available First Nations, elder-focused mental health support, transportation options, and gathering spaces such as those commonly seen in urban areas was also highlighted. Conclusion: The process of iteratively developing and evaluating a CRW program resulted in a Northwestern Ontario college welcoming the first cohort of students to the CRW program in March 2022. The program is co-facilitated with a First Nations Elder and includes components of local culture, language, and the reintegration of First Nations elders into community as part of the rehabilitation efforts. In addition, to appropriately support the quality of life, health, and wellbeing of First Nations elders, the project team called upon provincial and federal governments to work with First Nations to make available dedicated funding to address inequities in resources available to First Nations elders in Northwestern Ontario urban and First Nations remote communities. This included elder-focused transportation options, mental health services, and gathering places. The program implementation will be evaluated with the first cohort of CRWs for further adaptations considering potential scale and spread. As such, the project and findings may also represent a resource for others wishing to pursue similar development using participatory approaches in rural and remote communities both nationally and internationally.     The International Scientific Association of Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) consensus statement on the definition and scope of postbiotics

    In 2019, the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) convened a panel of experts specializing in nutrition, microbial physiology, gastroenterology, paediatrics, food science and microbiology to review the definition and scope of postbiotics. The term 'postbiotics' is increasingly found in the scientific literature and on commercial products, yet is inconsistently used and lacks a clear definition. The purpose of this panel was to consider the scientific, commercial and regulatory parameters encompassing this emerging term, propose a useful definition and thereby establish a foundation for future developments. The panel defined a postbiotic as a "preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confers a health benefit on the host". Effective postbiotics must contain inactivated microbial cells or cell components, with or without metabolites, that contribute to observed health benefits. The panel also discussed existing evidence of health-promoting effects of postbiotics, potential mechanisms of action, levels of evidence required to meet the stated definition, safety and implications for stakeholders. The panel determined that a definition of postbiotics is useful so that scientists, clinical triallists, industry, regulators and consumers have common ground for future activity in this area. A generally accepted definition will hopefully lead to regulatory clarity and promote innovation and the development of new postbiotic products.Postbiotics are emerging substances prepared from inactivated microorganisms, in contrast to probiotics, which must be administered alive.
