    Vacuum State of Lattice Gauge Theory with Fermions in 2+1 Dimensions

    We investigate the vacuum state of the lattice gauge theory with fermions in 2+1 dimensions. The vacuum in the Hermite form for the fermion part is obtained; the vacuum in the unitary form has been proposed by Luo and Chen.     Decreased levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 and vascular endothelial growth factor relevant to the ossification disturbance in femoral heads spontaneous hypertensive rats.

    Ossification disturbance in femoral head reportedly is seen in the Spontaneously Hypertensive rats (SHR) between ages of 10 and 20 weeks. We investigated serum and tissue levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in SHR relevant to the ossification disturbance and osteonecrosis of the femoral head. Serum levels of IGF-1 and VEGF were significantly lower in SHR than in Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY) at weeks 5, 10, 15 and 20 (p<0.005). The incidence of histological ossification disturbance of the femoral head was higher in SHR (59%) than in WKY (40%) at week 20. Lower serum and local levels of VEGF in SHR appeared to be related to the incomplete ossification of the femoral heads. Immunohistochemical study showed significantly lower numbers of IGF-1 and VEGF positive chondrocytes in the femoral epiphyseal cartilage of SHR than in those of WKY at weeks 10, 15 and 20. Our results suggest that local and/or systemic levels of IGF-1 and VEGF between ages of 5 and 20 weeks might play roles in the pathogenesis of ossifi cation disturbance of the femoral head in SHR

    Kawasan Kalimantan Timur mengalami musim kemarau panjang yang merangsang terjadinya kebakaran hutan yang luas pada 1982-1983 dan 1997-1998.Naskah ini mengemukakan hasil penelitian di Bukit Bangkirai, Kalimantan Tengah mengenai dampak dari kemarau panjang dan kebakaran hutan 1997-1998 terhadap diversitas tumbuhan pohon hutan dipterokarp campuran.Penelitian dilakukan dengan cara memperbandinkan hasil pencacahan tumbuhan pohon berlingkar batang setinggi dada lebih daripada 15cm yang terdapat dalam tiga petak penelitian, masing-masing: lha di hutan alam yang tidak terbakar (K-plot), 0,3 ha di hutan yang terbakar ringan (LD) dan lha di hutan yang terbakar berat (HD).Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa musim kemarau panjang 1997-1998 menyebabkan 12,02% mortalitas individual pohon di hutan alam yang tidak terbakar, yang terlihat dari pohon mati berdiri tegak akibat kekeringan, atau kehilangan 21,67% dari total basal area. Secara keseluruhan terlihat bahwa kebakaran hutan menyebabkan kerusakan berat terhadap struktur dan komposisi hutan. Secara kumulatif, kemarau panjang dan kebakaran hutan menyebabkan mortalitas individual pohon berkisar 36-70% dan kehilangan total basal area antara 45-85% dan menyebabkan lantai hutan terbuka terhadap penyinaran matahari langsung karena menurunnya penutupan tajuk sebesar 23-79%.Kebakaran hutan juga berdampak terhadap penurunan biodiversitas tumbuhan pohon sebesar 23-79% pada tingkat jenis, 53-66% pada tingkat marga dan 18-21% pada tingkat suku.Tercatat perubahan komposisi jenis pada hutan yang terbakar; dominasi jenis Dipterocarpaceae dipetak hutan tak terbakar (K) menjadi dominasi pionir sekunder Macaranga gigantea-Vernonia arborea di petak terbakar berat (HD) dan dominasi Macaranga gigantea-Shorea smilhiana di petak terbakar ringan (LD).Beberapa jenis seperti Durio acutifolius dan Syzygium incarnaium mungkin dapat digolongkan sebagai jenis yang relative lebih tahan terhadap api

    Accurate estimation of scattering strength distribution by simultaneous reception of ultrasonic echoes with multichannel transducer array

    Recently, there have been several studies on ultrasonic cross-sectional imaging based on simultaneous reception of echo signals with an array transducer without scanning ultrasonic beams during transmission. In those studies, parallel processing was applied to create an image from a data set simultaneously received by the array. However, the lateral resolution of the parallel processing is not high. In this study, in order to improve the spatial resolution of parallel processing, the least-squares estimation and the truncated singular value decomposition (tSVD) are applied to the echo signals from two wire targets simultaneously received with a multichannel transducer array. We introduced a weighting for correcting the effect of the directivity of the elements of the array. The experimental results show a higher lateral resolution of the tSVD method with weighting than that of conventional parallel processing. The axial resolution is also improved by considering the finite duration of the transmitted ultrasonic pulse. A typical application of this method is nondestructive evaluation, that is, the detection of cavities and cracks in welded metal structures

    Increased Rac1 activity and Pak1 overexpression are associated with lymphovascular invasion and lymph node metastasis of upper urinary tract cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Lymphovascular invasion (LVI) and lymph node metastasis are conventional pathological factors associated with an unfavorable prognosis of urothelial carcinoma of the upper urinary tract (UC-UUT), but little is known about the molecular mechanisms underlying LVI and nodal metastasis in this disease. Rac1 small GTPase (Rac1) is essential for tumor metastasis. Activated GTP-bound Rac1 (Rac1 activity) plays a key role in activating downstream effectors known as Pak (21-activated kinase), which are key regulators of cytoskeletal remolding, cell motility, and cell proliferation, and thus have a role in both carcinogenesis and tumor invasion.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We analyzed Rac1 activity and Pak1 protein expression in matched sets of tumor tissue, non-tumor tissue, and metastatic lymph node tissue obtained from the surgical specimens of 108 Japanese patients with UC-UUT.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Rac1 activity and Pak1 protein levels were higher in tumor tissue and metastatic lymph node tissue than in non-tumor tissue (both <it>P </it>< 0.0001). A high level of Rac1 activity and Pak1 protein expression in the primary tumor was related to poor differentiation (<it>P </it>< 0.05), muscle invasion (<it>P </it>< 0.01), LVI (<it>P </it>< 0.0001), and lymph node metastasis (<it>P </it>< 0.0001). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that an increase of Rac1 activity and Pak1 protein was associated with a shorter disease-free survival time (<it>P </it>< 0.01) and shorter overall survival (<it>P </it>< 0.001). Cox proportional hazards analysis revealed that high Rac1 activity, Pak1 protein expression and LVI were independent prognostic factors for shorter overall and disease-free survival times (<it>P </it>< 0.01) on univariate analysis, although only Pak1 and LVI had an influence (<it>P </it>< 0.05) according to multivariate analysis.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>These findings suggest that Rac1 activity and Pak1 are involved in LVI and lymph node metastasis of UC-UUT, and may be prognostic markers for this disease.</p
