Red thermoluminescence of enstatite from the Chainpur meteorite

For most ordinary chondrites feldspar is mainly responsible for thermoluminescence [TL], but in type 3 ordinary chondrites, especially those which are most primitive, other minerals are important. We observed red TL with a ∿660nm spectral peak in an ordinary chondrite, Chainpur (LL3.4). The mineral responsible for the red TL was identified as iron-free enstatite. Spatial distribution of TL and cathodoluminescence [CL] for the same specimen was also investigated, and it was found that the red TL areas corresponded to the high-sensitivity areas of red CL

Optical study of charge instability in CeRu2Al10 in comparison with CeOs2Al10 and CeFe2Al10

The anisotropic electronic structure responsible for the antiferromagnetic transition in CeRu2Al10 at the unusually high temperature of T0=28 K was studied using optical conductivity spectra, Ce 3d x-ray photoemission spectra, and band calculation. It was found that the electronic structure in the ac plane is that of a Kondo semiconductor, whereas that along the b axis has a nesting below 32 K (slightly higher than T0). These characteristics are the same as those of CeOs2Al10 [ S. Kimura et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 106 056404 (2011)]. The c-f hybridization intensities between the conduction and 4f electrons of CeRu2Al10 and CeOs2Al10 are weaker than that of CeFe2Al10, showing no magnetic ordering. These results suggest that the electronic structure with one-dimensional weak c-f hybridization along the b axis combined with two-dimensional strong hybridization in the ac plane causes charge-density wave (CDW) instability, and the CDW state then induces magnetic ordering

Acquired resistance of leukemic cells to AraC is associated with the upregulation of aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 family member A2.

The elucidation of drug resistance mechanisms is important in the development of clinical therapies for the treatment of leukemia. To study the drug resistance mechanisms, protein expression profiles of 1-β-D-arabinofuranosylcytosine (AraC)-sensitive K562 (K562S) cells and AraC-resistant K562 (K562AC) cells were compared using two-dimensional fluorescence difference gel electrophoresis. In a comparison of protein expression profiles, 2073 protein spots were found to be altered, and 15 proteins of them were remarkably altered. These proteins were identified by mass spectrometry. The most differently expressed proteins were aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 family member A2 (ALDH1A2) and vimentin. Both proteins were verified using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and Western blot analysis. ALDH1A2 protein was found to be effective in AraC resistance. ALDH1A2 knock-down induced sensitivity to AraC treatment in K562AC cells, and ALDH1A2 overexpressed K562S cells acquired the AraC resistance. Furthermore, the findings also suggest that ALDH1A2 expression is increased after the appearance of AraC resistance in clinical cases. These results will be helpful in understanding the mechanism of AraC resistance

Behavioural and pharmacological effects of fluvoxamine on decision-making in food patches and the inter-temporal choices of domestic chicks

Behavioural effects of fluvoxamine (FLV, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) were examined in 1–2 week old domestic chicks. Chicks were tested in an I-shaped maze equipped with a feeder (ON feeder) that served 1 or 2 grains of millet at gradually increasing intervals, so that a depleting food patch was mimicked. By leaving the feeder, the food delivery program was reset, and chicks gained food at short intervals only after a travel to a dummy feeder (OFF feeder) placed on the opposite side of the maze. Chicks quickly learned to actively shuttle between the ON and the OFF feeders. FLV (intra-peritoneal injection, 20 mg/kg BW) acutely caused chicks to stay longer at the gradually depleting ON feeder. Inter-temporal choices were also tested, whereby two coloured beads were simultaneously presented, each associated with a small/short-delay reward or a large/long-delay alternative. FLV suppressed the choice of the short-delay option. It is suggested that an enhanced level of serotonin (5-HT) makes chicks more tolerant of the delayed food item in both behavioural paradigms. Furthermore, the decision to leave a depleting patch cannot be equated to choosing the long-delay option of the choice paradigm. Furthermore, FLV suppressed work efforts (velocity and running distance) in uncued shuttle and number of distress calls. In vivo microdialysis experiments revealed that FLV enhanced the extracellular concentration of 5-HT as well as dopamine (DA) locally in the medial striatum/nucleus accumbens. Underlying neuromodulatory mechanisms of behavioural control are examined in relation to locomotion, behavioural tolerance and interval timing
