Survey of switching techniques in high-speed networks and their performance
One of the most promising approaches for high speed networks for integrated service applications is fast packet switching, or ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode). ATM can be characterized by very high speed transmission links and simple, hard wired protocols within a network. To match the transmission speed of the network links, and to minimize the overhead due to the processing of network protocols, the switching of cells is done in hardware switching fabrics in ATM networks.A number of designs has been proposed for implementing ATM switches. While many differences exist among the proposals, the vast majority of them is based on self-routing multi-stage interconnection networks. This is because of the desirable features of multi-stage interconnection networks such as self-routing capability and suitability for VLSI implementation.Existing ATM switch architectures can be classified into two major classes: blocking switches, where blockings of cells may occur within a switch when more than one cell contends for the same internal link, and non-blocking switches, where no internal blocking occurs. A large number of techniques has also been proposed to improve the performance of blocking and nonblocking switches. In this paper, we present an extensive survey of the existing proposals for ATM switch architectures, focusing on their performance issues

Performance Evaluation of an Integrated Access Scheme in a Satellite Communication Channel
A method for realizing a circuit and packet integrated access scheme in a satellite communication channel is considered. Two kinds of terminals are assumed, namely, bursty terminals for handling bursty traffic and heavily loaded terminals for long-holdingtime message traffic. In this method, the channel frame is divided into two subframes: one is for bursty terminals, and the other is for heavily loaded terminals. The subframe for heavily loaded terminals is further divided into two subchannels, a reservation subchannel (consisting of small slots) and a message subchannel. The bursty terminals transmit their packets in their dedicated subframes on the slotted ALOHA protocol. The heavily loaded terminal having a message transmits, first of all, a reservation packet in a randomly selected small slot of the reservation subchannel to reserve slots in the coming message subchannels. One slot in the same position of each of the succeeding message subchannels is reserved for the terminal until the end-of-use flag, transmitted from the terminal, is received by the satellite. Mean transmission delays for both kinds of traffic in this method are analytically obtained. We show that there exists an optimal frame length which minimizes mean transmission delay for one kind of traffic while keeping mean transmission delay for the other kind under some permissible value

Performance Evaluation of a Packetized Voice System Simulation Study
Introduction of the packet switching technique into digitized voice communication may afford great advantages in efficient use of the channel, compared to both circuit-switched and DSI systems. Detailed characteristics, however, have not been obtained because of difficulty in the exact analysis. Hence, simulation models are developed in this paper for the packetized voice transmission system, and various characteristics such as transmission delays and loss probability of voice packets are obtained. We further evaluate three types of voice packet reassembly strategy at t he receiving terminal, and obtain the optimal packet length, which keeps each of overall packet transmission delay and packet loss probability less than a certain permissible values. Comparison among three strategies is also stated
Fault tolerant packet-switched network design and Its sensitivity
Reliability and performance for telecommunication networks have traditionally been investigated separately in spite of their close relation. A design method integrating them for a reliable packet switched network, called a proofing method, is presented. Two heuristic design approaches (max-average, max-delay-link) for optimizing network cost in the proofing method are described. To verify their effectiveness and applicability, they are compared numerically for three example network topologies. The sensitivity of these two methods is examined with respect to changes in traffic demand and in link reliability. The design sensitivity to variation of input data is examined by changing the predicted probability of link failure, and by increasing the network traffic over the predicted value. The resulting analysis shows relative insensitivity of solutions generated by the two design methods to input data</p

Throughput and delay analysis of free access tree algorithm with mini-slots
This paper analyzes throughput and delay performance of two kinds of free access tree algorithms with mini-slots, and the other is that ternary feedback information is available. In these algorithms Q number of mini-slots are provided within a slot to offer feedback information on the state of the channel. The maximum throughputs of binary and ternary feedback algorithms are analytically obtained. It is also shown that the highest maximum throughput of 0.56714 is achieved when Q approaches infinity and mini-slot overhead goes to zero. The lower bound of the average transmission delays in these algorithms is analytically derived. The obtained lower bound is also a lower bound of the average delay of the whole class of free access algorithms
Advances and Analysis on Reducing Webpage Response Time with Effect of Edge Computing
Modern webpages consist of many rich objects dynamically produced by servers and client terminals at diverse locations, so we face an increase in web response time. To reduce the time, edge computing, in which dynamic objects are generated and delivered from edge nodes, is effective. For ISPs and CDN providers, it is desirable to estimate the effect of reducing the web response time when introducing edge computing. Therefore, in this paper, we derive a simple formula that estimates the lower bound of the reduction of the response time by modeling flows obtaining objects of webpages. We investigate the effect of edge computing in each webpage category, e.g., News and Sports, using data measured by browsing about 1,000 popular webpages from 12 locations in the world on PlanetLab
Performance Analysis of Signaling Delay for Wireless Cellular Networks
In wireless cellular networks, signaling traffic such as location update, paging and handoff due to the user\u27s mobility takes a considerable portion of the total traffic load. In addition, the maximum allowable delays may be different among the signaling packets. In this paper, we present an analytical model for evaluating a total processing delay of signaling packets of wireless cellular networks, which integrates the delays of the radio channel and the processing delay at the wired portion. Through numerical examples, we show that priority processing is effective for reducing the handoff processing delays. We also evaluate the delay difference among cells according to their position within the location area, and the influence of number of terminals upon the processing delays
Microstructure, Mechanical Properties and Fracture Behavior of α Particle Irradiated Type 316 Stainless Steel
The present work is a research of the effect of helium on the microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture behaviors of a type 316 austenitic steel. Helium implantation was performed by 30-MeV α-particle injection on very small size specimens, using a cyclotron. Average helium content in a He-deposited region was up to 2000 appm He. In the case of 2000appm He implantation, intergranular fracture was sometimes observed on the helium deposited region after tensile test at room temperature. At elevated temperature test, however, this material showed the transition of fracture mode from transgranular-ductile fracture at 773K to intergranular fracture at 873. In the case of 500 appm He implantation, the transition of fracture mode was recognized at a temperature range of 873K to 973K
Pharmacokinetics of Mirabegron, a β3-Adrenoceptor Agonist for Treatment of Overactive Bladder, in Healthy Japanese Male Subjects: Results from Single- and Multiple-Dose Studies
BACKGROUND: Mirabegron is a human β(3)-adrenoceptor agonist for the treatment of overactive bladder. The pharmacokinetic profile of mirabegron has been extensively characterized in healthy Caucasian subjects. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the pharmacokinetics, dose-proportionality, and tolerability of mirabegron following single and multiple oral doses in healthy Japanese male subjects. The results were compared with those reported in non-Japanese (primarily Caucasian) subjects. METHODS: Two studies were conducted. In a single-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, single- and multiple-ascending dose study (Study 1), mirabegron oral controlled absorption system (OCAS) tablets were administered at single doses of 50, 100, 200, 300, and 400 mg, with eight subjects (six active, two placebo) per dose group (Part I), and once daily for 7 days at 100 and 200 mg with 12 subjects (eight active, four placebo) per group (Part II). In an open-label, three-period, single-ascending dose study (Study 2), mirabegron OCAS was administered to 12 subjects at 25, 50, and 100 mg in an intra-subject dose-escalation design. Plasma and/or urine samples were collected up to 72 h after the first and last dose and analyzed for mirabegron. Pharmacokinetic parameters were determined using non-compartmental methods. Tolerability assessments included physical examinations, vital signs, 12-lead electrocardiogram, clinical laboratory tests (biochemistry, hematology, and urinalysis), and adverse event (AE) monitoring. RESULTS: Forty and 24 young male subjects completed Part I and II, respectively, of Study 1. Twelve young males completed Study 2. After single oral doses (25–400 mg), maximum plasma concentrations (C(max)) were reached at approximately 2.8–4.0 h postdose. Plasma exposure (C(max) and area under the plasma concentration–time curve) of mirabegron increased more than dose proportionally at single doses of 25–100 mg and approximately dose proportionally at high doses of 300 and 400 mg. A more than dose proportional increase in plasma exposure was noted in the body of the same individual. Mirabegron accumulated twofold upon once-daily dosing relative to single-dose data. Steady state was reached within 7 days. Mirabegron was generally well-tolerated at single doses up to 400 mg and multiple doses up to 200 mg. The AE with the highest incidence was increased pulse rate at 400 mg in Study 1. CONCLUSIONS: Mirabegron OCAS exhibits similar single- and multiple-dose pharmacokinetic characteristics and deviations from dose proportionality in healthy Japanese male subjects compared with those observed in non-Japanese (primarily Caucasian) subjects in previous studies
Candida albicans
Genotypes of Candida spp. isolated from exhalation of 20 dolphins, 11 water samples from captive pools, and 24 oral cavities of staff members in an aquarium using a combination of multiple drug resistance 1 gene (MDR1) and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) 1 5.8s-ITS 2 regions of ribosomal RNA gene (ITS rDNA) sequences were studied. The holding ratios of the dolphins, captive pools, and staff members were 70, 90, and 29%, respectively. Isolated pathogenic yeast species common to the dolphins and environments were Candida albicans and C. tropicalis. Identical genotypes in both Candida spp. based on the combination of MDR1 and ITSrDNA were found in some dolphins, between a dolphin and a staff, among dolphins and environments, and among environments. The results indicated the diffusion and exchange of pathogenic yeasts at the aquarium among dolphins and environments. The isolates at the aquarium showed higher rates of resistance to azole antifungals compared to reference isolates
