    Low-Temperature X-ray Crystal Structure Analysis of the Cage-Structured Compounds MBe13 (M = La, Sm, and U)

    The beryllides MBe13 (M = rare earths and actinides) crystallize in a NaZn13-type cubic structure, which can be categorized as a cage-structured compound. In this study, powder X-ray diffraction measurements have been performed on LaBe13, SmBe13, and UBe13 in the temperature range between 7 and 300 K in order to investigate their crystallographic characteristics systematically. They keep the NaZn13-type cubic structure down to the lowest temperature. We estimated their Debye temperature to be 600 - 750 K from analyses of the temperature dependence of a lattice parameter, being in good agreement with the values reported previously. Rietveld refinements on the obtained powder patterns revealed that the M atom in the 8a site is located in an almost ideal snub cube formed by 24 Be atoms in the 96i site, whose caged structure is unchanged even at the low temperatures. In addition, it is argued from the temperature variation of an isotropic mean-square displacement parameter that the MBe13 compounds commonly have a low-energy phonon mode, which can be described by a model assuming an Einstein oscillation of the M atom with a characteristic temperature of ~ 160 K.Comment: 8 pages with 6 figures and 2 table

    The Virgo High-Resolution CO Survey. III. NGC 4254

    We present high-angular-resolution (1".5 - 5") interferometer observations of the \co emission in the central region of the SA(s)c galaxy NGC 4254. The observations were obtained using the Nobeyama Millimeter-wave Array (NMA) during the course of a long-term CO line survey of Virgo spirals. We present the spectra, channel maps, integrated intensity distributions, velocity fields, position--velocity diagrams, and compare the data with various optical images. The rotation velocity is already finite at the nucleus, or at least it rises steeply to 80 km/s within the central 1", indicating the existence of a massive core of 10^8 Msun within 1" (80 pc) radius. The CO intensity maps show that the inner disk has well-developed multiple spiral arms, winding out from a bar-shaped elongated molecular complex. In addition to the bisymmetric spiral arms, an asymmetric tightly wound arm with high molecular gas density is found to wind out from the molecular bar. The molecular spiral arms, particularly the tightly wound arm, well traces optical dark lanes, and are associated with Hα\alpha arms having many H {\sc ii} regions. The inner asymmetric spiral structures can be explained by ram-pressure distortion of inter-arm low density regions of the inner disk by the intra-cluster gas wind, and is indeed reproduced by a hydrodynamical simulation.Comment: PASJ 2003 in press, Latex 9 pages, 10 figures.     Severe thrombocytopenia in a patient with inosine triphosphatase (ITPA)–CC genotype caused by pegylated interferon (IFN)-α-2a with ribavirin therapy: a case report

    BACKGROUND: Pegylated interferon combined with ribavirin treatment is an effective therapy for chronic hepatitis C viral infection. However, pegylated interferon combined with ribavirin is associated with various adverse reactions. Severe thrombocytopenia is a life-threatening side effect of interferon therapy that can lead to bleeding. It is generally understood that the inosine triphosphatase-CC genotype does not have a significantly lower reduction by pegylated interferon combined with ribavirin in the mean platelet counts compared with the AA/CA genotype. We report a case of severe thrombocytopenia that developed in a patient with chronic hepatitis C treated with pegylated interferon combined with ribavirin in spite of having the inosine triphosphatase-CC genotype. CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old female had been diagnosed as having HCV infection in 2008. The inosine triphosphatase gene showed one single nucleotide polymorphism (rs1127354) C/C (major homozygous) and the IL28B gene showed single nucleotide polymorphism (rs8099917 T/T, rs11881222 T/T) (major homozygous). The patient was treated with pegylated interferon 180 μg once a week combined with ribavirin 600 mg per day from April 2011. The hepatitis c virus ribonucleic acid turned negative 9 weeks after treatment with pegylated interferon combined with ribavirin. During the therapy, the platelet count remained above 8.0 × 10(4)/μl for about 9 months. In January 2012, the platelet count was 6.8 × 10(4)/μl. In February 2012, the 44th week from the beginning of the treatment, a sudden decrease in the platelet count to 0.8 × 10(4)/μl was observed. After prednisolone was administered, the platelet count increased. Finally the platelet count had risen above normal range. CONCLUSION: We should pay careful attention in the differential diagnosis for patients with the inosine triphosphatase-CC genotype because, although rare, severe thrombocytopenia could occur

    Crystalline Electric Field and Kondo Effect in SmOs4Sb12

    Our ultrasound results obtained in pulsed magnetic fields show that the filled-skutterudite compound SmOs4_4Sb12_{12} has the Γ67\Gamma_{67} quartet crystalline-electric-field ground state. This fact suggests that the multipolar degrees of freedom of the Γ67\Gamma_{67} quartet play an important role in the unusual physical properties of this material. On the other hand, the elastic response below \approx 20 T cannot be explained using the localized 4ff-electron model, which does not take into account the Kondo effect or ferromagnetic ordering. The analysis result suggests the presence of a Kondo-like screened state at low magnetic fields and its suppression at high magnetic fields above 20 T even at low temperatures.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
