    Why Are People High in Dispositional Awe Happier? The Roles of Meaning in Life and Materialism

    Awe is an intense emotional response to perceptually vast stimuli that dramatically transcend one’s ordinary reference frame and provoke a need to adjust the current mental structures. Dispositional awe reflects individual differences in the tendency to experience awe. The current study aims to examine the effect of dispositional awe on subjective well-being, with a focus on confirming the mediating role of meaning in life and materialism. A sample of 563 Chinese adults completed measures of dispositional awe, meaning in life, materialism, and subjective well-being. Correlation analysis revealed that dispositional awe, meaning in life, and materialism were all significantly correlated with subjective well-being. Structural equation modeling showed significant paths from dispositional awe to subjective well-being through both meaning in life and materialism. Bootstrap analysis also indicated that meaning in life and materialism mediated the relationship between dispositional awe and subjective well-being. These findings not only corroborate the critical role of dispositional awe in promoting subjective well-being, but also shed some light on why people high in dispositional awe are happier than those low in dispositional awe. Limitations and directions for future research were also discussed

    Combined effects of cigarette smoking, gene polymorphisms and methylations of tumor suppressor genes on non small cell lung cancer: a hospital-based case-control study in China

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cigarette smoking is the most established risk factor, and genetic variants and/or gene promoter methylations are also considered to play an essential role in development of lung cancer, but the pathogenesis of lung cancer is still unclear.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We collected the data of 150 cases and 150 age-matched and sex-matched controls on a Hospital-Based Case-Control Study in China. Face to face interviews were conducted using a standardized questionnaire. Gene polymorphism and methylation status were measured by RFLP-PCR and MSP, respectively. Logistic regressive model was used to estimate the odds ratios (OR) for different levels of exposure.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>After adjusted age and other potential confounding factors, smoking was still main risk factor and significantly increased 3.70-fold greater risk of NSCLC as compared with nonsmokers, and the ORs across increasing levels of pack years were 1, 3.54, 3.65 and 7.76, which the general dose-response trend was confirmed. Our striking findings were that the risk increased 5.16, 8.28 and 4.10-fold, respectively, for NSCLC with promoter hypermethylation of the <it>p16</it>, <it>DAPK </it>or <it>RARβ </it>gene in smokers with <it>CYP1A1 </it>variants, and the higher risk significantly increased in smokers with null <it>GSTM1 </it>and the OR was 17.84 for NSCLC with <it>p16 </it>promoter hypermethylation, 17.41 for <it>DAPK</it>, and 8.18 for <it>RARβ </it>in smokers with null <it>GSTM1 </it>compared with controls (all p < 0.01).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our study suggests the strong combined effects of cigarette smoke, <it>CYP1A1 </it>and <it>GSTM1 </it>Polymorphisms, hypermethylations of <it>p16</it>, <it>DAPK </it>and <it>RARβ </it>promoters in NSCLC, implying complex pathogenesis of NSCLC should be given top priority in future research.</p

    How Upward Moral Comparison Influences Prosocial Behavioral Intention: Examining the Mediating Role of Guilt and the Moderating Role of Moral Identity

    Although it has been shown that exceptional good deeds exert influences on people's prosocial behavior and intention, we have known little about how common moral actions in our daily life. The present study aimed to examine how upward moral comparison influenced prosocial behavioral intention as well as to explore the mediating role of guilt and the moderating role of moral identity in the focal relationship. An experimental study was conducted with 162 Chinese undergraduates (103 women, 59 men) randomly assigned to an upward moral comparison condition, an upward competence comparison condition or a control condition. Results indicated that participants in the upward moral comparison condition experienced higher levels of guilt and exhibited stronger motivation to act prosocially, relative to participants in the other two conditions. That is to say, upward moral comparison induces guilty experience, and then increases people's prosocial behavioral intention. Moreover, we have found that moral identity internalization moderates the upward moral comparison-guilt relationship, and the indirect effect of upward moral comparison on prosocial behavioral intention via guilt.     Analysis of Dynamic Engaged Characteristics of Wet Clutch in Variable Speed Transmission of a Helicopter

    The working principle and motion process of an aviation wet clutch are analyzed. The initial velocity before the friction pair engaged is solved. The transient Reynolds equation is modified, and an oil film bearing capacity model and a micro-convex bearing capacity model are derived. The film thickness equation between N friction pairs and a pressure-plate is derived. A dynamic engaged model of springs, pistons, friction pairs, and pressure plates are established. The torque balance equation is established of two pairs of friction pairs. The friction torque, rate of change in the oil film, and law of relative change in speed are obtained. The results demonstrate that the spring preload and the viscosity of the lubricating oil have a significant influence on the engagement characteristics. Increasing the quality of the friction plate will reduce the time of engagement, whereas the quality of the friction plate has slight effect on the friction torque characteristics and oil film thickness. The initial speed generated by the collision process will reduce the output speed, sharply increase the torque peak at the lock, and increase the shift shock

    Coercivity Mechanism of (Nd0.8Ce0.2)2.4Fe12Co2B Ribbons with Ferromagnetic Grain Boundary Phase

    Understanding the coercivity mechanism has had a substantial impact on developing economically more attractive RE-based (RE = rare earth) permanent materials because of price volatility of key RE metals (i.e., Nd and Dy) in recent years. In this work, we investigated the microstructure and magnetic properties of melt-spun (Nd0.8Ce0.2)2.4Fe12Co2B ribbons and annealed samples at 773 K for 15 min with 1 Tesla (T) magnetic field to better understand the coercivity mechanism. We found hard magnetic grains were surrounded by thin and continuous layers along the grain boundaries (GBs) with a high concentration of ferromagnetic elements (Fe + Co &gt;74 at%). The obvious positive peak in the δM plot and the interaction domain structure observed by Lorentz magnetic microscopy indicate that there is strong exchange coupling interaction through the ferromagnetic GB phase between hard magnetic grains. The annealing in an applied magnetic field of 1 T increases the remanence by enhancing the exchange coupling interaction, leading to a maximum product energy ((BH)max) which is 16% higher than that of melt-spun ribbons. We also studied the temperature dependence of the coercivity in a temperature range of 300–500 K, and proposed that the coercivity of melt-spun (Nd0.8Ce0.2)2.4Fe12Co2B ribbons with ferromagnetic GB phase at room temperature was from the combination of strong domain-wall pinning and nucleation.     Industrial Heap Bioleaching of Copper Sulfide Ore Started with Only Water Irrigation

    Sulfuric acid solution containing ferric iron is the extractant for industrial heap bioleaching of copper sulfides. To start a heap bioleaching plant, sulfuric acid is usually added to the irrigation solution to maintain adequate acidity (pH 1.0-2.0) for copper dissolution. An industrial practice of heap bioleaching of secondary copper sulfide ore that began with only water irrigation without the addition of sulfuric acid was successfully implemented and introduced in this manuscript. The mineral composition and their behavior related to the production and consumption of sulfuric acid during the bioleaching in heaps was analyzed. This indicated the possibility of self-generating of sulfuric acid in heaps without exogenous addition. After proving by batches of laboratory tests, industrial measures were implemented to promote the sulfide mineral oxidation in heaps throughout the acidifying stages, from a pH of 7.0 to 1.0, thus sulfuric acid and iron was produced especially by pyrite oxidation. After acidifying of the heaps, adapted microbial consortium was inoculated and established in a leaching system. The launch of the bioleaching heap and finally the production expansion were realized without the addition of sulfuric acid, showing great efficiency under low operation costs
