    Far Field Monitoring of Rogue Nuclear Activity with an Array of Large anti-neutrino Detectors

    The result of a study on the use of an array of large anti-neutrino detectors for the purpose of monitoring rogue nuclear activity is presented. Targeted regional monitoring of a nation bordering large bodies of water with no pre-existing legal nuclear activity may be possible at a cost of about several billion dollars, assuming several as-yet-untested schemes pan out in the next two decades. These are: (1) the enabling of a water-based detector to detect reactor anti-neutrinos by doping with GdCl3_3; (2) the deployment of a KamLAND-like detector in a deep-sea environment; and (3) the scaling of a Super-Kamiokande-like detector to a size of one or more megatons. The first may well prove feasible, and should be tested by phase-III Super-Kamiokande in the next few years. The second is more of a challenge, but may well be tested by the Hanohano collaboration in the coming decade. The third is perhaps the least certain, with no schedule for construction of any such device in the foreseeable future. In addition to the regional monitoring scheme, several global, untargeted monitoring schemes were considered.     Job Analysis and Job Evaluation Method Choice: User Qualifications and Implications for Applications and Research

    Research interest in the areas of job analysis and job evaluation has been increased recently as a result of attention being given to the comparable worth issue. The purpose of the present study was to assess the effects of job analysis and job evaluation method choice on the outcome of the salary determination process, and to investigate how user qualifications interact with methods. Within the context of the JAMES Matrix, two job analysis methods (CIT and FJA) were systematically paired with two job evaluation methods (ranking and point). Three groups of participants, representing distinctly different levels of expertise (method experts, content experts, and university students) evaluated four jobs (clerical, trades/craft, technical, and managerial) in order to determine the appropriate salaries. Data were analyzed using a repeated measures analysis of variance. Results of the salary determinations demonstrated a significant main effect for expertise, along with significant interactions involving job evaluation method x expertise, job descriptions x expertise and job descriptions x job evaluation method x expertise. Further analysis indicated no effect for incumbents evaluating jobs similar to their own. A three-way analysis of variance, with time as a dependent measure, showed that CIT took significantly more time than FJA. Results were discussed in terms of their implications for applications within the personnel management and industrial/organizational psychology arenas. Particular attention was given to the implications of the present findings to the direction of the comparable worth debate. Results were further discussed in terms of future research suggestions

    This study examined the effects of delay of gratification on academic success, substance abuse, and violent behavior. The participants in this study were chosen from an alternative learning school comprised of middle school students in Florida. The hypothesis for this study is as follows: Delay of gratification is negatively related to substance abuse and violent behavior, and positively related to academic achievement. The analysis of the data was conducted on the primary predictor variable (delay of gratification), alternate predictor variables (substance abuse & violent behavior) and the ultimate outcome variable (academic achievement) of this study. Initial statistical inquiry involved descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, kurtosis and skew) of the aforementioned variables, partial correlations (variable interrelationships), and the formulation of a multiple regression path analysis to investigate the particular paths individually within the proposed theoretical model (Wagner, 1993)

    Queuing network models of a computer system operating with a single workload type are presented. Program algorithms are adapted for use on the Texas Instruments SR-52 programmable calculator. By slightly altering the algorithm to process the G and H matrices row by row instead of column by column, six devices and an unlimited job/terminal population could be handled on the SR-52. Techniques are also introduced for handling a simple load dependent server and for studying interactive systems with fixed multiprogramming limits

    Solar System Processes Underlying Planetary Formation, Geodynamics, and the Georeactor

    Only three processes, operant during the formation of the Solar System, are responsible for the diversity of matter in the Solar System and are directly responsible for planetary internal-structures, including planetocentric nuclear fission reactors, and for dynamical processes, including and especially, geodynamics. These processes are: (i) Low-pressure, low-temperature condensation from solar matter in the remote reaches of the Solar System or in the interstellar medium; (ii) High-pressure, high-temperature condensation from solar matter associated with planetary-formation by raining out from the interiors of giant-gaseous protoplanets, and; (iii) Stripping of the primordial volatile components from the inner portion of the Solar System by super-intense solar wind associated with T-Tauri phase mass-ejections, presumably during the thermonuclear ignition of the Sun. As described herein, these processes lead logically, in a causally related manner, to a coherent vision of planetary formation with profound implications including, but not limited to, (a) Earth formation as a giant gaseous Jupiter-like planet with vast amounts of stored energy of protoplanetary compression in its rock-plus-alloy kernel; (b) Removal of approximately 300 Earth-masses of primordial gases from the Earth, which began Earth's decompression process, making available the stored energy of protoplanetary compression for driving geodynamic processes, which I have described by the new whole-Earth decompression dynamics and which is responsible for emplacing heat at the mantle-crust-interface at the base of the crust through the process I have described, called mantle decompression thermal-tsunami; and, (c)Uranium accumulations at the planetary centers capable of self-sustained nuclear fission chain reactions.Comment: Invited paper for the Special Issue of Earth, Moon and Planets entitled Neutrino Geophysics Added final corrections for publicatio

    Robotic control of the seven-degree-of-freedom NASA laboratory telerobotic manipulator

    A computationally efficient robotic control scheme for the NASA Laboratory Telerobotic Manipulator (LTM) is presented. This scheme utilizes the redundancy of the seven-degree-of-freedom LTM to avoid joint limits and singularities. An analysis to determine singular configurations is presented. Performance criteria are determined based on the joint limits and singularity analysis. The control scheme is developed in the framework of resolved rate control using the gradient projection method, and it does not require the generalized inverse of the Jacobian. An efficient formulation for determining the joint velocities of the LTM is obtained. This control scheme is well suited for real-time implementation, which is essential if the end-effector trajectory is continuously modified based on sensory feedback. Implementation of this scheme on a Motorola 68020 VME bus-based controller of the LTM is in progress. Simulation results demonstrating the redundancy utilization in the robotic mode are presented

    New opportunities for the application of telerobotic systems to enhance human intelligence and dexterity in the hazardous environment of space are presented by the NASA Space Station Program. Because of the need for significant increases in extravehicular activity and the potential increase in hazards associated with space programs, emphasis is being heightened on telerobotic systems research and development. The Laboratory Telerobotic Manipulator (LTM) program is performed to develop and demonstrate ground-based telerobotic manipulator system hardware for research and demonstrations aimed at future NASA applications. The LTM incorporates traction drives, modularity, redundant kinematics, and state-of-the-art hierarchical control techniques to form a basis for merging the diverse technological domains of robust, high-dexterity teleoperations and autonomous robotic operation into common hardware to further NASA's research
