Sentence production by younger and older adults in controlled contexts
This is an electronic version of an article published in J Gerontol B Psychol Sci Soc Sci (2004) 59 (5): P220-P224. doi: 10.1093/geronb/59.5.P220In this experiment we compared young and older adults' abilities to produce complex sentences under controlled conditions. We asked participants to memorize sentence stems differing in syntactical complexity and then to produce a complete sentence using the stem. The length, complexity, and content of young adults' responses varied with the syntactical complexity of the stems, whereas older adults' responses did not. These results suggest that working memory processing limitations impose a “ceiling” on older adults' production of complex sentences, limiting their length, complexity, and content

Paleogene monsoons across India and South China: Drivers of biotic change
Monsoonal climates at low latitudes (2. Fossil leaf form reveals that under such 'hothouse' conditions megathermal early Eocene to earliest Miocene forests were exposed to strong monsoonal climates typical of those experienced today arising from annual migrations of the ITCZ, possibly enhanced by a lower equator-to-pole temperature gradient. Throughout the Paleogene an elevated Tibetan highland produced no discernable modification of this ITCZ monsoon, although rainfall seasonality similar to that of the modern South Asia Monsoon (SAM) is observed in northern India as early as the beginning of the Eocene, despite its near-equatorial palaeoposition. In South China rainfall seasonality increased progressively achieving modern monsoon-like wet season/dry season precipitation ratios by the early Oligocene. Despite evidencing weak rainfall seasonality overall, fossil leaves from South China have exhibited monsoon-adapted morphologies, comparable to those seen in today's Indonesia-Australia Monsoon, for at least 45 million years. Together, the Indian and South China fossil leaf assemblages show that the evolution of megathermal ecosystems across southern Asia has been influenced profoundly by monsoonal climates for at least the last 56 million years. The Paleogene ITCZ-driven monsoon system strongly impacted India as it transited the Equator likely eliminating Gondwanan taxa not able to adapt to seasonal precipitation extremes. Furthermore, powerful seasonally-reversing winds, and associated surface ocean currents, are likely to have facilitated two-way biotic transfer between India and Eurasia long before closure of the Tethys Ocean
Surface scattering velocities in III-nitride quantum well laser structures via the emission of hybrid phonons
We have theoretically and numerically studied nitride-based quantum well (QW)
laser structures. More specifically, we have used a QW made with III-nitride
where the width of the barrier region is large relative to the electron mean
free path, and we have calculated the electron surface capture velocities by
considering an electron flux which is captured into the well region. The
process is assisted by the emission of the longitudinal optical phonons as
predicted by the hybrid (HB) model. The results of surface capture velocities
via the emission of HB phonons are compared to the emission of the dielectric
continuum phonons (Zakhleniuk et al 1999 Phys. Status Solidi a 176 79). Our
investigation shows that the two different phonon models predict almost the
same results for the non-retarded limit. Furthermore, the surface capture
velocities strongly depend on the size of the structure and the heterostructure
materials. Lastly, a comparison to the recent experimental values shows that
our model could accurately describe the experimentally measured parameters of
the quantum capture processes

computing for financial applications, with particular emphasis on stochastic
modeling, optimization, and machine learning. This Review is aimed at
physicists, so it outlines the classical techniques used by the financial
industry and discusses the potential advantages and limitations of quantum
techniques. Finally, we look at the challenges that physicists could help
tackle

Pericardial Fat and Echocardiographic Measures of Cardiac Abnormalities
Objective: Pericardial adipose tissue (PAT), a regional fat depot adjacent to the myocardium, may mediate the complex relation between obesity and cardiac left ventricular (LV) abnormalities. We sought to evaluate the association of PAT with echocardiographic measures of LV abnormalities in the Jackson Heart Study (JHS). Research Design and Methods: A total of 1,414 African Americans (35% men; mean age 58 years) from the JHS underwent computed tomographic assessment of PAT and abdominal visceral adipose tissue (VAT) from 2007 to 2009 and echocardiography examination between 2000 and 2004. Echocardiographic measures of left atrial (LA) internal diameter, LV mass, LV ejection fraction (LVEF), and E-wave velocity-to-A-wave velocity ratio (E/A ratio) were examined in relation to PAT, VAT, BMI, and waist circumference (WC). Results: All adiposity measures were positively correlated with LA diameter and LV mass and negatively correlated with E/A ratio (P = 0.02 to 0.0001) and were not with LVEF (P = 0.36–0.61). In women, per 1-SD increment of PAT, we observed association with higher LV mass (9.0 1.7 gm, P = 0.0001) and LA diameter (1.0 0.1 mm, P = 0.0001). However, the magnitude of the association between PAT and cardiac measures was similar compared with VAT (P = 0.65 [LV mass]; P = 0.26 [LA diameter]) and was smallercompared with BMI (P = 0.002 [LV mass]; P = 0.01 [LA diameter]) and WC (P = 0.009 [LA diameter]). Conclusions: PAT is correlated with echocardiographic measures of cardiac LV abnormalities, but the association is not stronger than other adiposity measures
Interferon Alpha Induces Establishment of Alphaherpesvirus Latency in Sensory Neurons In Vitro
Background: Several alphaherpesviruses, including herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) and pseudorabies virus (PRV), establish lifelong latency in neurons of the trigeminal ganglion (TG). Although it is thought that efficient establishment of alphaherpesvirus latency is based on a subtle interplay between virus, neurons and the immune system, it is not clear which immune components are of major importance for the establishment of latency. Methodology/Principal Findings: Here, using an in vitro model that enables a natural route of infection, we show that interferon alpha (IFNalpha) has the previously uncharacterized capacity to induce a quiescent HSV-1 and PRV infection in porcine TG neurons that shows strong similarity to in vivo latency. IFNalpha induced a stably suppressed HSV-1 and PRV infection in TG neurons in vitro. Subsequent treatment of neurons containing stably suppressed virus with forskolin resulted in reactivation of both viruses. HSV and PRV latency in vivo is often accompanied by the expression of latency associated transcripts (LATs). Infection of TG neurons with an HSV-1 mutant expressing LacZ under control of the LAT promoter showed activation of the LAT promoter and RT-PCR analysis confirmed that both HSV-1 and PRV express LATs during latency in vitro.
