The Solidarity of the New Israel

The New Testament Israel, or ecclesia, has been the subject of exhaustive study in recent years. A pressing question in this field is that of the relationship between the solidarity of the Israel of the Old and New Testaments. Some have held that there is no particular significance in this relationship. They regard the New Testament Church as the pure product of the teachings of Jesus without any antecedents whatever. Others have found the New Testament Church to be the essential continuation of the Old Testament Israel. The truth, as usual, lies between these extreme positions. A proper understanding of the relationship is essential to a proper presentation of the doctrine of the Church

One\u27s opinion on the proposed altar and pulpit fellowship with The American Lutheran Church should lend itself to singing, for a Christian should be an Alleluia from head to foot. It\u27s a good criterion by which to evaluate Christian thought and life. A Christian should be a living alleluia in his relationship to his fellow Christian, a living alleluia in his relationship to non-Christians

Justification by grace through faith constitutes the unifying theme of this issue. Profs. Robert Bertram and George Hoyer treat the topic from different points of view. Bertram\u27s paper was originally delivered to an international group of army officers in Europe; Hoyer spoke to a group of American architects in Kansas! The warm reception accorded both papers is evidence of the continuing relevance of this Lutheran shibboleth

With this issue this journal begins a new phase in its 42-year history of theological service. Our format is altered slightly, and we launch a new schedule of appearances, for in the future we will appear five times a year. We are retaining for our name the initials that have become synonymous with us. We will always be the CTM. Our subscribers will continue to receive the equivalent of a 400-page book of contemporary theological thought each year for their subscription money. The homiletics section will receive a greater proportionate emphasis, but we do not anticipate any serious reduction in the amount of good theological material

An Examination of the Ethical Injunctions of St Paul

Its only purpose is to highlight the ethical portions in the writings of Paul. It will do this by emphasizing three aspects which have perhaps not received proper stress in many books which discuss this subject. These three aspects will be discussed under the general heading of the new three-fold relationship in which the converted individual finds himself
