Global Renewable Energy Indicators for Sustainable Development
Energy supplies from renewable sources are the essential components of every nations energy strategy because of their positive environmental impacts and sustainability. It is economically competitive with fossil fuels. It is one of the pillars of sustainable energy. Climate change, global warming that harms the environment, massive depletion of fossil fuels and hike in rate of oil has driven the governments to support renewable energy legislation and policies. The application and contribution of renewable energy are prominent for sustainable energy development. Renewable energy scenarios such as wind energy, solar energy, bio-energy, geothermal energy, hydro energy and hydrogen energy are presented in this paper. The upward trends of renewable energy installation give motivation and encouragement to enhance the efficiency of renewable energy systems
Retinal Vessel Segmentation Using the 2-D Morlet Wavelet and Supervised Classification
We present a method for automated segmentation of the vasculature in retinal
images. The method produces segmentations by classifying each image pixel as
vessel or non-vessel, based on the pixel's feature vector. Feature vectors are
composed of the pixel's intensity and continuous two-dimensional Morlet wavelet
transform responses taken at multiple scales. The Morlet wavelet is capable of
tuning to specific frequencies, thus allowing noise filtering and vessel
enhancement in a single step. We use a Bayesian classifier with
class-conditional probability density functions (likelihoods) described as
Gaussian mixtures, yielding a fast classification, while being able to model
complex decision surfaces and compare its performance with the linear minimum
squared error classifier. The probability distributions are estimated based on
a training set of labeled pixels obtained from manual segmentations. The
method's performance is evaluated on publicly available DRIVE and STARE
databases of manually labeled non-mydriatic images. On the DRIVE database, it
achieves an area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of
0.9598, being slightly superior than that presented by the method of Staal et
al.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures and 1 table. Accepted for publication in IEEE

Quantum computation with trapped ions in an optical cavity
Two-qubit logical gates are proposed on the basis of two atoms trapped in a
cavity setup. Losses in the interaction by spontaneous transitions are
efficiently suppressed by employing adiabatic transitions and the Zeno effect.
Dynamical and geometrical conditional phase gates are suggested. This method
provides fidelity and a success rate of its gates very close to unity. Hence,
it is suitable for performing quantum computation.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, REVTEX, second part modified, typos correcte
Designable electron transport features in one-dimensional arrays of metallic nanoparticles: Monte Carlo study of the relation between shape and transport
We study the current and shot noise in a linear array of metallic
nanoparticles taking explicitly into consideration their discrete electronic
spectra. Phonon assisted tunneling and dissipative effects on single
nanoparticles are incorporated as well. The capacitance matrix which determines
the classical Coulomb interaction within the capacitance model is calculated
numerically from a realistic geometry. A Monte Carlo algorithm which
self-adapts to the size of the system allows us to simulate the single-electron
transport properties within a semiclassical framework. We present several
effects that are related to the geometry and the one-electron level spacing
like e.g. a negative differential conductance (NDC) effect. Consequently these
effects are designable by the choice of the size and arrangement of the
nanoparticles.Comment: 13 pages, 12 figure
Non-Perturbative Gravity and the Spin of the Lattice Graviton
The lattice formulation of quantum gravity provides a natural framework in
which non-perturbative properties of the ground state can be studied in detail.
In this paper we investigate how the lattice results relate to the continuum
semiclassical expansion about smooth manifolds. As an example we give an
explicit form for the lattice ground state wave functional for semiclassical
geometries. We then do a detailed comparison between the more recent
predictions from the lattice regularized theory, and results obtained in the
continuum for the non-trivial ultraviolet fixed point of quantum gravity found
using weak field and non-perturbative methods. In particular we focus on the
derivative of the beta function at the fixed point and the related universal
critical exponent for gravitation. Based on recently available lattice
and continuum results we assess the evidence for the presence of a massless
spin two particle in the continuum limit of the strongly coupled lattice
theory. Finally we compare the lattice prediction for the vacuum-polarization
induced weak scale dependence of the gravitational coupling with recent
calculations in the continuum, finding similar effects.Comment: 46 pages, one figur
Steady-State Cracks in Viscoelastic Lattice Models
We study the steady-state motion of mode III cracks propagating on a lattice
exhibiting viscoelastic dynamics. The introduction of a Kelvin viscosity
allows for a direct comparison between lattice results and continuum
treatments. Utilizing both numerical and analytical (Wiener-Hopf) techniques,
we explore this comparison as a function of the driving displacement
and the number of transverse sites . At any , the continuum theory misses
the lattice-trapping phenomenon; this is well-known, but the introduction of
introduces some new twists. More importantly, for large even at
large , the standard two-dimensional elastodynamics approach completely
misses the -dependent velocity selection, as this selection disappears
completely in the leading order naive continuum limit of the lattice problem.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figure
