New developments in the statistical approach of parton distributions
We recall how parton distributions are constructed in a statistical physical
picture of the nucleon. The chiral properties of QCD lead to strong relations
between quarks and antiquarks distributions and the importance of the Pauli
exclusion principle is also emphasized. A global next-to-leading order QCD
analysis of unpolarized and polarized deep-inelastic scattering data allows to
determine a small number of free parameters. Some predictions are compared to
recent experimental results and we discuss the prospects of this physical
framework.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures. Invited talk presented at the " Corfu Summer

Glauber theory of initial- and final-state interactions in (p,2p) scattering
We develop the Glauber theory description of initial- and final-state
interactions (IFSI) in quasielastic A(p,2p) scattering. We study the
IFSI-distortion effects both for the inclusive and exclusive conditions. In
inclusive reaction the important new effect is an interaction between the two
sets of the trajectories which enter the calculation of IFSI-distorted one-body
density matrix for inclusive (p,2p) scattering and are connected with
incoherent elastic rescatterings of the initial and final protons on spectator
nucleons. We demonstrate that IFSI-distortions of the missing momentum
distribution are large over the whole range of missing momentum both for
inclusive and exclusive reactions and affect in a crucial way the
interpretation of the BNL data on (p,2p) scattering. Our numerical results show
that in the region of missing momentum p_{m}\lsim 100-150 MeV/c the
incoherent IFSI increase nuclear transparency by 5-10\%. The incoherent IFSI
become dominant at p_{m}\gsim 200 MeV/c.Comment: Accepted in Z. Phys.A, Latex, 26 pages, uuencoded 9 figure
Measurement of quasi-elastic 12C(p,2p) scattering at high momentum transfer
We measured the high-momentum quasi-elastic 12C(p,2p) reaction (at center of
mass angle near 90 degrees) for 6 and 7.5 GeV/c incident protons. The
three-momentum components of both final state protons were measured and the
missing energy and momentum of the target proton in the nucleus were
determined.
The validity of the quasi-elastic picture was verified up to Fermi momenta of
about 450 MeV/c, where it might be questionable. Transverse and longitudinal
Fermi momentum distributions of the target proton were measured and compared to
independent particle models which do not reproduce the large momentum tails. We
also observed that the transverse Fermi distribution gets wider as the
longitudinal component increases in the beam direction, in contrast to a simple
Fermi gas model.Comment: 4 pages including 3 figure
Longitudinal Momentum Fraction X_L for Two High P_t Protons in pp->ppX Reaction
We present an analysis of new data from Experiment E850 at BNL. We have
characterized the inclusive cross section near the endpoint for pp exclusive
scattering in Hydrogen and in Carbon with incident beam energy of 6 GeV. We
select events with a pair of back-to-back hadrons at large transverse momentum.
These cross sections are parameterized with a form
, where is the ratio of the longitudinal momentum
of the observed pair to the total incident beam momentum. Small value of
may suggest that the number of partons participating in the reaction is large
and reaction has a strong dependence on the center-of-mass energy. We also
discuss nuclear effects observed in our kinematic region.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to be published in Proceedings of CIPANP2000,

Soudan 2 data acquisition and trigger electronics
The 1.1 kton Soudan 2 calorimetric drift-chamber detector is read out by 16K anode wires and 32K cathode strips. Preamps from each wire or strip are bussed together in groups of 8 to reduce the number of ADC channels. The resulting 6144 channels of ionization signal are flash-digitized every 200 ns and stored in RAM. The raw data hit patterns are continually compared with programmable trigger multiplicity and adjacency conditions. The data acquisition process is managed in a system of 24 parallel crates each containing an Intel 80C86 microprocessor, which supervises a pipe-lined data compactor, and allows transfer of the compacted data via CAMAC to the host computer. The 80C86's also manage the local trigger conditions and can perform some parallel processing of the data. Due to the scale of the system and multiplicity of identical channels, semi-custom gate array chips are used for much of the logic, utilizing 2.5 micron CMOS technology
Sum Rule Description of Color Transparency
The assumption that a small point-like configuration does not interact with
nucleons leads to a new set of sum rules that are interpreted as models of the
baryon-nucleon interaction. These models are rendered semi-realistic by
requiring consistency with data for cross section fluctuations in proton-proton
diffractive collisions.Comment: 22 pages + 3 postscript figures attache
Extracting the Proton ubar content from pp->Direct Photon plus Jet Cross Sections
An analysis procedure is proposed to measure the antiquark distributions in
the proton over the region 0.01 < x < 0.1. The procedure involves the
measurement of high p_t asymmetric direct photon and jet final states in pp
interactions. This measurement can be made at the RHIC collider running in pp
mode at an energy of sqrt(s)=500 GeV/c. This analysis identifies a region of
phase space where the contribution from quark-antiquark annihilation
uncharacteristically approaches the magnitude of the contribution from the
leading process, quark-gluon Compton scattering. The forward-backward angular
asymmetry in the parton center of mass is sensitive to the antiquark content of
the proton and the ubar parton density function can be extracted.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figure
