Training young people through a school/enterprise partnership: a longitudinal study

This paper reports a longitudinal study of 58 students who undertook an engineering traineeship concurrent with their final two years of secondary school. The student experience was planned as a partnership arrangement between a manufacturing enterprise, a secondary school, and a post-secondary technical education institution. Results are discussed in terms of completion of studies, employment and career pathways, employment outcomes, and post-traineeship employment destinations. Both the quantitative and qualitative data indicate that participants have benefited significantly in each area investigated. The significance of the program in developing propositional, procedural, and dispositional workplace knowledge is also discussed.<br /

    Non-Symbolic Fragmentation

    Get PDF
This paper reports on the use of non-symbolic fragmentation of data for securing communications. Non-symbolic fragmentation, or NSF, relies on breaking up data into non-symbolic fragments, which are (usually irregularly-sized) chunks whose boundaries do not necessarily coincide with the boundaries of the symbols making up the data. For example, ASCII data is broken up into fragments which may include 8-bit fragments but also include many other sized fragments. Fragments are then separated with a form of path diversity. The secrecy of the transmission relies on the secrecy of one or more of a number of things: the ordering of the fragments, the sizes of the fragments, and the use of path diversity. Once NSF is in place, it can help secure many forms of communication, and is useful for exchanging sensitive information, and for commercial transactions. A sample implementation is described with an evaluation of the technology

School Systems and the PTA: Partnering in the Time of COVID-19

    Get PDF
School systems and parents have fought over control of K-12 education for more than 150 years. However, the COVID-19 pandemic shined a spotlight on the need for school systems and parents to build cross-sectoral partnerships to deliver that education. One vehicle for this cross-sectoral partnership is the Parent Teacher Associations (PTA) found in every school district. Partnering is not a novel idea in education. School districts partner with colleges and universities, after-school providers, and school-based health systems. It is time for educators and their communities to reexamine and strengthen their cross-sectoral partnership with the nongovernmental organization that is already there, the local PTA.
