RXTE and ASCA Constraints on Non-thermal Emission from the A2256 Galaxy Cluster
An 8.3 hour observation of the Abell 2256 galaxy cluster using the Rossi
X-ray Timing Explorer proportional counter array produced a high quality
spectrum in the 2 - 30 keV range. Joint fitting with the 0.7 - 11 keV spectrum
obtained with the Advanced Satellite for Astrophysics and Cosmology gas imaging
spectrometer gives an upperlimit of 2.3x10^-7 photons/cm^2/sec/keV for
non-thermal emission at 30 keV. This yields a lower limit to the mean magnetic
field of 0.36 micro Gauss (uG) and an upperlimit of 1.8x10^-13 ergs/cm^3 for
the cosmic-ray electron energy density. The resulting lower limit to the
central magnetic field is ~1 - 3 uG While a magnetic field of ~0.1 - 0.2 uG can
be created by galaxy wakes, a magnetic field of several uG is usually
associated with a cooling flow or, as in the case of the Coma cluster, a
subcluster merger. However, for A2256, the evidence for a merger is weak and
the main cluster shows no evidence of a cooling flow. Thus, there is presently
no satisfactory hypothesis for the origin of an average cluster magnetic field
as high as >0.36 uG in the A2256 cluster.Comment: 8 pages, Astrophysical Journal (in press
Social Semiotic Multimodality
This chapter gives an introduction to social semiotics, its conceptual origins in linguistics, notably in the work of Halliday, and how it has been developed as an approach within multimodality. The key principles of this approach are discussed, and five key concepts are outlined. The chapter illustrates the application of a social semiotic multimodal approach to the social media platform Pinterest to explore users multimodal design of their homepages to construct style, with a focus on their construction of gendered style. The resources of image, colour, and writing are examined,with attention to how their use is shaped through the interaction of social norms and the designed affordances of Pinterest
Infrared spectroscopy of Landau levels in graphene
We report infrared studies of the Landau level (LL) transitions in single
layer graphene. Our specimens are density tunable and show \textit{in situ}
half-integer quantum Hall plateaus. Infrared transmission is measured in
magnetic fields up to B=18 T at selected LL fillings. Resonances between hole
LLs and electron LLs, as well as resonances between hole and electron LLs are
resolved. Their transition energies are proportional to and the
deduced band velocity is m/s. The lack of
precise scaling between different LL transitions indicates considerable

Prenatal antidepressant exposure and child behavioural outcomes at 7Â years of age: a study within the Danish National Birth Cohort
Objective: To investigate the impact of prenatal antidepressant exposure on behavioural problems in children at 7 years of age. Design: Nationwide population-based study. Setting: Danish National Birth Cohort. Population: A cohort of 49 178 pregnant women recruited between 1996 and 2002. Methods: Data obtained from computer-assisted telephone interviews twice during pregnancy were used to identify children born to: (i) depressed women who took antidepressants during pregnancy (n = 210); (ii) depressed women who did not take any antidepressants during pregnancy (n = 231); and (iii) healthy women who were not depressed (n = 48 737). Childhood behavioural problems at 7 years of age were examined using the validated Danish parent-report version of the Strengths and DifïŹculties Questionnaire (SDQ). Main outcome measures: SDQ scores. Results: No associations were observed between prenatal antidepressant exposure and abnormal SDQ scores for overall problem behaviour (adjusted relative risk, aRR 1.00; 95% conïŹdence interval, 95% CI 0.49â2.05), hyperactivity/inattention (aRR 0.99; 95% CI 0.56â1.75), or peer problems (aRR 1.04; 95% CI 0.57â1.91). Although prenatal antidepressant exposure appeared to be associated with abnormal SDQ scores on the subscales of emotional symptoms (aRR 1.68; 95% CI 1.18â2.38) and conduct problems (aRR 1.58; 95% CI 1.03â2.42), these associations were signiïŹcantly attenuated following adjustment for antenatal mood status (aRR 1.20; 95% CI 0.85â1.70 and aRR 1.19; 95% CI 0.77 1.83, respectively). Untreated prenatal depression was associated with an increased risk of all behavioural outcomes evaluated, compared with unexposed children, with signiïŹcant attenuation following adjustment for antenatal mood status. Envelope Structure of Starless Core L694-2 Derived from a Near-Infrared Extinction Map
We present a near-infrared extinction study of the dark globule L694-2, a
starless core that shows strong evidence for inward motions in molecular line
profiles. The J,H, and K band data were taken using the European Southern
Observatory New Technology Telescope. The best fit simple spherical power law
model has index p=2.6 +/- 0.2, over the 0.036--0.1 pc range in radius sampled
in extinction. This power law slope is steeper than the value of p=2 for a
singular isothermal sphere, the initial condition of the inside-out model for
protostellar collapse. Including an additional extinction component along the
line of sight further steepens the inferred profile. Fitting a Bonnor-Ebert
sphere results in a super-critical value of the dimensionless radius xi_max=25
+/- 3. The unstable configuration of material may be related to the observed
inward motions. The Bonnor-Ebert model matches the shape of the observed
profile, but significantly underestimates the amount of extinction (by a factor
of ~4). This discrepancy in normalization has also been found for the nearby
protostellar core B335 (Harvey et al. 2001). A cylindrical density model with
scale height H=0.0164+/- 0.002 pc viewed at a small inclination to the cylinder
axis provides an equally good radial profile as a power law model, and
reproduces the asymmetry of the core remarkably well. In addition, this model
provides a basis for understanding the discrepancy in the normalization of the
Bonnor-Ebert model, namely that L694-2 has prolate structure, with the full
extent (mass) of the core being missed by assuming symmetry between the
profiles in the plane of the sky and along the line-of-sight. If the core is
sufficiently magnetized then fragmentation may be avoided, and later evolution

A complete classification of spherically symmetric perfect fluid similarity solutions
We classify all spherically symmetric perfect fluid solutions of Einstein's
equations with equation of state p/mu=a which are self-similar in the sense
that all dimensionless variables depend only upon z=r/t. For a given value of
a, such solutions are described by two parameters and they can be classified in
terms of their behaviour at large and small distances from the origin; this
usually corresponds to large and small values of z but (due to a coordinate
anomaly) it may also correspond to finite z. We base our analysis on the
demonstration that all similarity solutions must be asymptotic to solutions
which depend on either powers of z or powers of lnz. We show that there are
only three similarity solutions which have an exact power-law dependence on z:
the flat Friedmann solution, a static solution and a Kantowski-Sachs solution
(although the latter is probably only physical for a1/5, there are
also two families of solutions which are asymptotically (but not exactly)
Minkowski: the first is asymptotically Minkowski as z tends to infinity and is
described by one parameter; the second is asymptotically Minkowski at a finite
value of z and is described by two parameters. A complete analysis of the dust
solutions is given, since these can be written down explicitly and elucidate
the link between the z>0 and z<0 solutions. Solutions with pressure are then
discussed in detail; these share many of the characteristics of the dust

Minimising medicine use in organic dairy herds through animal health and welfare planning
Livestock is important in many organic farming systems, and it is an explicit goal to ensure high levels of animal health and welfare (AHW) through good management. This will lead to reduced medicine use and better quality of animal products. In two EU network projects NAHWOA & SAFO it was concluded that this is not guaranteed merely by following organic standards. Both networks recommended implementation of individual animal health plans to stimulate organic farmers to improve AHW. These plans should include a systematic evaluation of AHW and be implemented through dialogue with each farmer in order to identify goals and plan improvements. 15 research institutions in 8 European countries are involved in the proposed project with the main objective to minimise medicine use in organic dairy herds through active and well planned AHW promotion and disease prevention. The project consists of 5 work packages, 4 of which comprise research activities building on current research projects, new applications across borders, exchange of knowledge, results and conclusions between participating countries, and adopting them to widely different contexts. International and national workshops facilitate this exchange. Focus areas are animal health planning, AHW assessment using animal based parameters and development of advisory systems and farmer groups. Epidemiological analyses of the effect on AHW from reduced medicine use and herd improvements are planned in all participating countries
Spatially self-similar spherically symmetric perfect-fluid models
Einstein's field equations for spatially self-similar spherically symmetric
perfect-fluid models are investigated. The field equations are rewritten as a
first-order system of autonomous differential equations. Dimensionless
variables are chosen in such a way that the number of equations in the coupled
system is reduced as far as possible and so that the reduced phase space
becomes compact and regular. The system is subsequently analysed qualitatively

Farmer groups for animal health and welfare planning in European organic dairy hers
A set of common principles for active animal health and welfare planning in organic dairy farming has been developed in the ANIPLAN project group of seven European countries. Health and welfare planning is a farmerâowned process of continuous development and improvement and may be practised in many different ways. It should incorporate health promotion and disease handling, based on a strategy where assessment of current status and risks forms the basis for evaluation, action and review. Besides this, it should be 1) farmspecific, 2) involve external person(s) and 3) external knowledge, 4) be based on organic principles, 5) be written, and 6) acknowledge good aspects in addition to targeting the problem areas in order to stimulate the learning process
