    Understanding the Interaction of Potassium Salts with an Ilmenite Oxygen Carrier under Dry and Wet Conditions

    This study describes how potassium salts representative of those in bio ash affect the reactivity of the oxygen carrier ilmenite under moist and dry conditions. Ilmenite is a bench-mark oxygen carrier for chemical-looping combustion, a technique that can separate CO2 from flue gases with minimal energy penalty. Different potassium salts were mixed with ilmenite to a concentration of 4 wt % potassium. The salts used were K2CO3, K2SO4, KCl, and KH2PO4. Experiments were performed at 850 \ub0C under alternately oxidizing and reducing conditions in a dry atmosphere or in the presence of steam. Analyses of the oxygen carrier regarding changes in reactivity, structure, and composition followed the exposures. This study showed that salts such as K2CO3, K2SO4, and KCl increase the reactivity of the ilmenite. For the samples mixed with KCl, most of the salt was evaporated. KH2PO4 decomposed into KPO3, forming layers around the ilmenite particles that lead to agglomeration. Additionally, the KPO3 layer was more or less nonpermeable for CO and decreased the reactivity toward H2 significantly in both dry and wet conditions. This decreased reactivity indicates that the concentration of phosphorus in biofuel may have a significant effect on oxygen carrier degradation. It was also observed that the presence of steam changed the chemistry drastically for the nonphosphorus-containing salts. Alkali salts may react with steam, forming volatile KOH that evaporates partly. KOH may also form K-titanates by reaction with the oxygen carrier, leading to segregation of iron and titanium phases in the ilmenite. \ua

    Chest X-rays are less sensitive than multiple breath washout examinations when it comes to detecting early cystic fibrosis lung disease

    Aim: Annual chest X-ray is recommended as routine surveillance to track cystic fibrosis (CF) lung disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical utility of chest X-rays to track CF lung disease. Methods: Children at Gothenburg\u27s CF centre who underwent chest X-rays, multiple breath washouts and chest computed tomography examinations between 1996 and 2016 were included in the study. Chest X-rays were interpreted with Northern Score (NS). We compared NS to lung clearance index (LCI) and structural lung damage measured by computed tomography using a logistic regression model. Results: A total of 75 children were included over a median period of 13\ua0years (range: 3.0-18.0\ua0years). The proportion of children with abnormal NS was significantly lower than the proportion of abnormal LCI up to the age of 4\ua0years (p\ua0<\ua00.05). A normal NS and a normal LCI at age 6\ua0years were associated with a median (10-90th percentile) total airway disease of 1.8% (0.4-4.7%) and bronchiectasis of 0.2% (0.0-1.5%). Conclusion: Chest X-rays were less sensitive than multiple breath washout examinations to detect early CF lung disease. The combined results from both methods can be used as an indicator to perform chest computed tomography less frequently

    Determining the Short-Range Spin Correlations in Cuprate Chain Materials with Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

    We report a high-resolution resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering study of the quantum magnetic spin-chain materials Li2CuO2 and CuGeO3. By tuning the incoming photon energy to the oxygen K-edge, a strong excitation around 3.5 eV energy loss is clearly resolved for both materials. Comparing the experimental data to many-body calculations, we identify this excitation as a Zhang-Rice singlet exciton on neighboring CuO4-plaquettes. We demonstrate that the strong temperature dependence of the inelastic scattering related to this high-energy exciton enables to probe short-range spin correlations on the 1 meV scale with outstanding sensitivity.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Influence of molecular symmetry on strong-field ionization: Studies on ethylene, benzene, fluorobenzene, and chlorofluorobenzene

    Using the molecular strong-field approximation we consider the effects of molecular symmetry on the ionization of molecules by a strong, linearly polarized laser pulse. Electron angular distributions and total ionization yields are calculated as a function of the relative orientation between the molecule and the laser polarization. Our studies focus on ethylene (C2_2H4_4), benzene (C6_6H6_6), fluorobenzene (C6_6H5_5F), and ortho chlorofluorobenzene (1,2 C6_6H4_4ClF), the molecules representing four different point groups. The results are compared with experiments, when available, and with the molecular tunneling theory appropriately extended to non-linear polyatomic molecules. Our investigations show that the orientational dependence of ionization yields is primarily determined by the nodal surface structure of the molecular orbitals.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures.     Retrieving a common accumulation record from Greenland ice cores for the past 1800 years

    Abstract. In the accumulation zone of the Greenland ice sheet the annual accumulation rate may be determined through identification of the annual cy-cle in the isotopic climate signal and other parameters that exhibit seasonal vari-ations. On an annual basis the accumulation rate in different Greenland ice cores is highly variable, and the degree of correlation between accumulation series from different ice cores is low. However, when using multi year averages of the dif-ferent accumulation records the correlation increases significantly. A statistical model has been developed to estimate the common climate signal in the differ-ent accumulation records through optimization of the ratio between the variance of the common signal and of the residual. Using this model a common Green-land accumulation record with five years resolution for the past 1800 years has been extracted. The record establishes a climatic record which implies that very dry conditions during the 13th century together with dry and cold spells dur-ing the 14th century may have put extra strain on the Norse population in Green-land and have contributed to their extinction

    A baseline study of the occurrence of non-indigenous species in Danish harbours

    Project Manager/Main Author Jesper H. AndersenWe report the first ever nation-wide study of the occurrence of non-indigenous species in Danish harbours. The sampling was car-ried out using both conventional and biomolecular methods (eDNA). In total, 16 harbours were covered – Esbjerg and Aarhus, the two largest harbours in Denmark, with intensive sampling and 14 harbours with a reduced programme. 26 non-indigenous species were recorded using conventional sampling and 13 species were recorded using eDNA-based methods. Excluding overlapping rec-ords, we have recorded a total of 34 non-indigenous species in the 16 harbours studied. Based on the results, we conclude the following: 1) more non-indigenous species are found in the western parts of Denmark (North Sea region) then in the eastern parts (Baltic Sea), and 2) a few species previously unseen in Danish marine waters were recorded, i.e. the two bristle worms Eteone het-eropoda (fam. Phyllodocidae) and Streblospio benedicti (fam. Spionidae). Further, we provide a proof-of-concept regarding the overarching objectives of the MONIS 1-3 projects and the eDNA-based test systems developed. The results constitute a baseline for future studies in Danish ports and other hotspot areas.publishedVersio

    Anisotropic softening of magnetic excitations along the nodal direction in superconducting cuprates

    The high-T-c cuprate superconductors are close to antiferromagnetic order. Recent measurements of magnetic excitations have reported an intriguing similarity to the spin wavesmagnons- of the antiferromagnetic insulating parent compounds, suggesting that magnons may survive in damped, broadened form throughout the phase diagram. Here we show by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta (Bi-2212) that the analogy with spin waves is only partial. The magnon-like features collapse along the nodal direction in momentum space and exhibit a photon energy dependence markedly different from the Mott-insulating case. These observations can be naturally described by the continuum of charge and spin excitations of correlated electrons. The persistence of damped magnons could favour scenarios for superconductivity built from quasiparticles coupled to spin fluctuations. However, excitation spectra composed of particle-hole excitations suggest that superconductivity emerges from a coherent treatment of electronic spin and charge in the form of quasiparticles with very strong magnetic correlations
