    The genus <em>Aquattuor</em> Frederiksen, 2013 is revised. <em>A. denticulatus</em> Frederiksen, 2013 (type species) from the East Usambara Mts, Tanzania, is redescribed, and six new species are described: <em>A. claudiahempae</em> Enghoff &amp; Frederiksen sp. nov. from Mt.     Changing reference intervals for haemoglobin in Denmark: Clinical and financial aspects

    Introduction: Based on international experiences and altering demography the reference intervals (RI) for haemoglobin (Hb) concentrations in blood were changed in Denmark in 2013 from 113 - 161 g/L to 117 - 153 g/L for women and from 129 - 177 g/L to 134 - 170 g/L for men. The aim of this study was to determine the derived change in prevalence of anaemia and the change in yearly health care costs of diagnostic investigations associated with the expected, as we hypothesized, increased prevalence and health care costs. Materials and methods: Data from 96,314 non-hospitalised patients (55,341 females and 40,973 males, aged 18 - 105 years) from general practitioners and community specialists of Funen, Denmark, were extracted from the laboratory information system. The prevalence of anaemia according to the new and the old RI were investigated, and additional costs were calculated based on estimated additional blood analyses and nationally recommended endoscopic procedures. Results: Changing the Hb RI increased the number of anaemic patients by 52% (3450 patients) over a two-year period. With new RI the proportion of anaemic elderly above 80 years was 20.5% for females and 43.9% for males. Annual costs of derived additional assessments due to the altered RI were estimated to be 5.7 million €, which equals the cost of 1214 knee replacement surgeries in Denmark. Conclusions: Changing the Hb RI has been expensive, despite the fact that no outcome studies have justified the alteration. The methodological approach for establishing new RI, here particularly for Hb, should be thoroughly considered. In general, physicians should use RI with caution

    Plasma-Induced Heating Effects on Platinum Nanoparticle Size during Sputter Deposition Synthesis in Polymer and Ionic Liquid Substrates

    Nanoparticle catalyst materials are becoming ever more important in a sustainable future. Specifically, platinum (Pt) nanoparticles have relevance in catalysis, in particular, fuel cell technologies. Sputter deposition into liquid substrates has been shown to produce nanoparticles without the presence of air and other contaminants and the need for precursors. Here, we produce Pt nanoparticles in three imidazolium-based ionic liquids and PEG 600. All Pt nanoparticles are crystalline and around 2 nm in diameter. We show that while temperature has an effect on particle size for Pt, it is not as great as for other materials. Sputtering power, time, and postheat treatment all show slight influence on the particle size, indicating the importance of temperature during sputtering. The temperature of the liquid substrate is measured and reaches over 150 \ub0C during deposition which is found to increase the particle size by less than 20%, which is small compared to the effect of temperature on Au nanoparticles presented in the literature. High temperatures during Pt sputtering are beneficial for increasing Pt nanoparticle size beyond 2 nm. Better temperature control would allow for more control over the particle size in the future

    Vascular diseases in patients with chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms:Impact of comorbidity

    Background: Patients with chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), including essential thrombocythemia (ET), polycythemia vera (PV), and primary myelofibrosis (PMF), are at high risk of vascular complications. However, the magnitude of this is risk not well known and the possible effect of comorbidity is poorly understood. Aim: Our aim was to compare the risk of vascular diseases in patients with MPNs and matched comparisons from the general population and to study the effect modification of comorbidity. Methods: We followed 3087 patients with ET, 6076 with PV, 3719 with PMF or unspecified MPN, and age- and sex-matched general population comparisons to estimate the risks of cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction and stroke. We computed 5-year cumulative incidences (risks) for vascular disease in patients with MPNs and comparisons as well as 1-year and 5-year risks, risk differences, and hazard ratios (HRs) for vascular diseases comparing rates in each group of patients with their comparison cohort by level of comorbidity based on the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) [score of 0 (low comorbidity), of 1–2 (moderate comorbidity), and of >2 (severe comorbidity)], as well as other comorbid conditions. Results: The overall 5-year risk of vascular disease ranged from 0.5% to 7.7% in patients with MPNs, which was higher than the risk in the general population. In the same period, the adjusted HRs for vascular disease were 1.3 to 3.7 folds higher in patients with MPNs compared to the general population. An increase in CCI score was associated with an equally increased rate of most types of vascular diseases during the first 5 years of follow-up in both MPN and comparisons. Conclusion: Patients with MPNs have a higher risk of vascular diseases during the first 5 years than that of the general population; however, comorbidity modifies the rates similarly in MPN and in the general population
