In the biblical gesture of Jacob, the longest of all the patriarchs, it is possible to isolate one episode that is particularly significant from an anthropological point of view: Jacob’s nocturnal struggle with a vague and ambiguous figure, at the end of which he becomes lame and receives a new name. In the story of the twin birth of Jacob, of his characteristic which consists in continually supplanting others, of the lineages in which the text locates him, the episode of the ford of Yabboq stands out as a rite of passage, both individual and collective, of a chief, inextricably exceptional and weak, the lameness being the mark of the vulnerability at the heart of the destiny of the newly named Israël

AbstractAfter outlining briefly the type of analysis used in this note—i.e. the semiotics inspired from the linguist Hjelmslev—the description according to four levels of significance of the photo taken—and set up—by Bob Martin underlines its strong ambiguity. The third level of analysis of the double truncated body isolated within a frame that is itself fractionated particularly reveals the artificial way in which the scene is set. Finally, it leads to the interpretation that this photo stands between a stigmatisation—which dominates from our point of view—and a valorisation of the amputated body
