The Effects of a High Fat Meal on Blood Flow Regulation during Arm Exercise
A diet high in saturated fats results in endothelial dysfunction and can lead to atherosclerosis, a precursor to cardiovascular disease. Exercise training is a potent stimulus though to mitigate the negative effects of a high saturated fat diet; however, it is unclear how high-saturated fat meal (HSFM) consumption impacts blood flow regulation during a single exercise session.
PURPOSE: This study sought to examine the impact of a single HSFM on peripheral vascular function during an acute upper limb exercise bout.
METHODS: Ten young healthy individuals completed two sessions of progressive handgrip exercise. Subjects either consumed a HSFM (0.84 g of fat/kg of body weight) 4 hours prior or remained fasted before the exercise bout. Progressive rhythmic handgrip exercise (6kg, 12kg, 18kg) was performed for 3 minutes per stage at rate of 1 Hz. The brachial artery (BA) diameter and blood velocity was obtained using Doppler Ultrasound (GE Logiq e) and BA blood flow was calculated with these values.
RESULTS: BA blood flow and flow mediated dilation (normalized for shear rate) during the handgrip exercise significant increased from baseline in all workloads, but no differences were revealed in response to the HSFM consumption.
CONCLUSION: Progressive handgrip exercise augmented BA blood flow and flow mediated dilation in both testing days; however, there was no significant differences following the HSFM consumption. This suggests that upper limb blood flow regulation during exercise is unaltered by a high fat meal in young healthy individuals.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/gradposters/1060/thumbnail.jp
Tracking the British agricultural revolution through the isotopic analysis of dated parchment.

All data generated in this study are presented in the article and Supplementary Information file.Between the sixteenth and nineteenth century, British agriculture underwent a 'revolutionary' transformation. Yet despite over a century of research and the recognised centrality of agricultural developments to industrialisation and population growth, the character or chronology of any 'revolution' during this period remains contentious. Enquiry has been hampered by the fragmented and locally specific nature of historic accounts and the broad dating of early-modern zooarchaeological assemblages. To address this, we conducted stable isotope analysis on 658 legal documents written on sheepskin parchment; a unique biological resource that records the day, month and year of use (AD 1499 to 1969). We find these provide a high temporal resolution analysis of changing agricultural practices and episodes of disease. A longitudinal study of perceived health during pregnancy: antecedents and outcomes
Perceived health was studied longitudinally in a sample of 364 nulliparous women. Psychosocial, contextual, and biomedical factors were taken into account to predict medically relevant versus benign symptoms which were then used to predict perceived health over time. The results of structural equation modeling showed that pregnancy adjustment and medically relevant symptoms which were affected by social support, perceived stress, and negative affect predicted later perceived health. The outcomes of perceived health were examined during the third trimester in terms of medical care utilization and emergency room visits. Perceived health solely accounted for medical care utilization, while emergency room visits were accounted by medical care utilization and perceived stress
Fluctuation-Facilitated Charge Migration along DNA
We propose a model Hamiltonian for charge transfer along the DNA double helix
with temperature driven fluctuations in the base pair positions acting as the
rate limiting factor for charge transfer between neighboring base pairs. We
compare the predictions of the model with the recent work of J.K. Barton and
A.H. Zewail (Proc.Natl.Acad.Sci.USA, {\bf 96}, 6014 (1999)) on the unusual

Observation of the Dynamic Beta Effect at CESR with CLEO
Using the silicon strip detector of the CLEO experiment operating at the
Cornell Electron-positron Storage Ring (CESR), we have observed that the
horizontal size of the luminous region decreases in the presence of the
beam-beam interaction from what is expected without the beam-beam interaction.
The dependence on the bunch current agrees with the prediction of the dynamic

Influence of solvent granularity on the effective interaction between charged colloidal suspensions
We study the effect of solvent granularity on the effective force between two
charged colloidal particles by computer simulations of the primitive model of
strongly asymmetric electrolytes with an explicitly added hard sphere solvent.
Apart from molecular oscillating forces for nearly touching colloids which
arise from solvent and counterion layering, the counterions are attracted
towards the colloidal surfaces by solvent depletion providing a simple
statistical description of hydration. This, in turn, has an important influence
on the effective forces for larger distances which are considerably reduced as
compared to the prediction based on the primitive model. When these forces are
repulsive, the long-distance behaviour can be described by an effective Yukawa
pair potential with a solvent-renormalized charge. As a function of colloidal
volume fraction and added salt concentration, this solvent-renormalized charge
behaves qualitatively similar to that obtained via the Poisson-Boltzmann cell
model but there are quantitative differences. For divalent counterions and
nano-sized colloids, on the other hand, the hydration may lead to overscreened
colloids with mutual attraction while the primitive model yields repulsive
forces. All these new effects can be accounted for through a solvent-averaged
primitive model (SPM) which is obtained from the full model by integrating out
the solvent degrees of freedom. The SPM was used to access larger colloidal

Observation of a New Charmed Strange Meson
Using the CLEO-II detector, we have obtained evidence for a new meson
decaying to . Its mass is
{}~MeV/ and its width is ~MeV/. Although we do not
establish its spin and parity, the new meson is consistent with predictions for
