    Business Model Innovation and Stakeholder: Exploring Mechanisms and Outcomes of Value Creation and Destruction

    Given the objective of the focal firm to generate value for stakeholders, this research aims at assessing mechanisms and outcomes for value creation and destruction between business model innovation (BMI) and stakeholders. To achieve this goal, we conduct a systematic literature review and apply grounded theory as coding scheme. Taking frequent mechanisms and outcomes into account, we construct a conceptual framework and pioneer theory building. As main result, we identify BMI creating economic return for third parties and product/service access for customers. Both outcomes are based on the mechanism of altering resources and processes. In contrast, analyzing stakeholder’s main influence, we find management creating strategic orientation by providing know-how. Our research agenda emphasizes the design of BMI from an ecosystem perspective and the destructive consequences of BMI. While the ecosystem level of analysis provides new insights into the concept, investigating negative impacts contributes to a more holistic understanding of BMI

    Analyzing Measures for the Construct “Energy-Conscious Driving”: A Synthesized Measurement Model to Operationalize Eco-Feedback

    During the last several years, a large number of studies have dealt with eco-driving and have defined rules for driving vehicles more ecologically, eco-friendly, and energy efficiently. These rules are vague or insufficient for achieving their purpose, and the construct “energy- conscious driving” is unsatisfactorily defined. To structure available research and develop a more extensive concept of energy-conscious driving, a measurement model for energy- conscious driving is introduced. The model stems from a literature review conducted to identify six groups of measures for energy-conscious driving, and a synthesis of these groups to identify dependencies between them. This paper contributes to theory by building on existing knowledge on eco-driving through an analysis of available literature and describing dependencies between our six measures of energy-conscious driving. Based on our model, researchers can evaluate different eco-feedback designs and practitioners can implement more specific eco-feedback systems for improved user performance

    Platform Openness: A Systematic Literature Review and Avenues for Future Research

    Open platforms such as Facebook or Android have stimulated innovation and competition across industries. Information systems literature has analyzed platforms from a variety of perspectives. The aim of this paper is to synthesize and integrate extant interdisciplinary research on the concept of platform openness. Towards this end, we conducted a literature review and analyzed the results with deductive and inductive coding approaches. We identified five distinct themes: measurement frameworks, implementation mechanisms, drivers for opening and closing platforms, trade-offs in designing openness, and the impact of changing openness on ecosystems. We propose three avenues for future research: finding the optimal degree of platform openness, integrating perspectives on accessibility and transparency, and analyzing the influence of openness and other factors with configurational theories. This paper contributes to research on platforms by laying out the main themes and perspectives in the research stream of platform openness and by identifying areas for future research

    Feedback on Shopping Receipt Data Through a Mobile App: A Pilot Study

    Mobile applications have become popular tools for supporting healthy nutrition behavior. Current tools are primarily based on the detailed tracking of a user’s direct consumption, thus intervening only during or even after a user has eaten something. With increasing home office hours (especially during the COVID-19 pandemic), people are eating more often at home, which has also led to a decrease in fruit and vegetable consumption. Therefore, we aim to support people in the food-shopping process. We suggest a mobile application that helps people reflect on their purchases and tries to nudge users toward healthier product choices. We conducted a pilot study with 31 participants who used the application for two consecutive weeks. During this time, we observed a decrease in the caloric values per 100 g of purchases. Furthermore, we collected positive feedback on the app regarding acceptance, usability, and user experience

    Disruption of Individual Mobility Ahead? A Longitudinal Study of Risk and Benefit Perceptions of Self-Driving Cars on Twitter

    In this paper, we address the question if there is a disruption of individual mobility by self-driving cars ahead. In order to answer this question, we take the user perspective and conduct a longitudinal study of social media data about self-driving cars from Twitter. The study analyzes 601,778 tweets from March 2015 to July 2016. We use supervised machine learning classification to extract relevant information from this huge amount of unstructured text. Based on the classification, we analyze how risk and benefit perceptions of self-driving cars develop over time, and how they are influenced by certain events. Based on the perceived risks and benefits, we draw conclusions for the acceptance of self-driving cars. Our study shows that a disruptive innovation of self-driving cars is not likely as risk and benefit perception issues indicate a lack of acceptance. We provide suggestions for improving the acceptance of self-driving cars

    Door-to-Door Mobility Integrators as Keystone Organizations of Smart Ecosystems: Resources and Value Co-Creation – A Literature Review

    Cities around the world face major mobility-related challenges, such as traffic congestion and air pollution. One primary cause of these challenges is the decision of citizens to use their private car instead of alternative mobility services such as public transport, car-sharing and bike-sharing. Technological progress offers new possibilities to address these challenges by making alternative mobility services easier and more convenient to use. This paper focuses on door-to-door (D2D) mobility integrators, which aim to offer citizens seamless D2D transport by packaging alternative mobility services. To better understand the practical barriers D2D mobility integrators face, this interdisciplinary literature review provides a holistic picture of their operand and operant resources, revealing significant gaps in our understanding of their capability to attract actors to their ecosystem and to manage value co-creation. Based on these gaps, we identify a potential avenue of future research

    Towards a Model of Heterogeneity in IT Service Value Networks: Results from a Literature Review

    At the dawn of the Digital Economy, companies are facing with dematerialization and digitization of products and the trend towards service delivery. By supporting specialization and modularization of service providers, cloud computing involves the trend towards distributed service generation. Hence, multi-vendor networks arise and IT departments have to handle heterogeneous IT Service Value Networks (ITSVN). This research paper analyzes the concept of heterogeneity in ITSVN. Based on a literature review, this paper introduces a model of heterogeneity in ITSVN. Elements of this model are applications, platforms, infrastructures, actors, technologies, interfaces, and tools. Heterogeneity is caused by the diversity and alterity of the attributes of these elements. This article offers a fundamental understanding of the effects of heterogeneity in ITSVN, a definition of heterogeneity in ITSVN, and a model of influencing factors on heterogeneity in ITSVN

    Context-Dependent Information Elements in the Car: Explorative Analysis of Static and Dynamic Head-Up-Displays

    Head-up-displays (HUDs) illustrate a particular static number of information elements in the driver’s primary field of view. Since the display can obscure the reality, a dynamic HUD presents context-dependent information elements. To become familiar with a user-optimal number of information elements and its essential information elements, we conducted a user study with n = 183 participants. We focused the context on an urban, a rural and a highway trip. Afterwards, a within-subject experiment using a high-fidelity driving simulator (n = 27) reveals the following: Dynamic HUDs significantly lower the average over speeding by 3.45 km/h compared to static HUDs. This speed above the speed limit equals 15.33% of the average speed in urban areas. Steering angle and speed can capture the context. Practitioners can use these findings to decrease the number of information elements in HUDs, thereby possibly increasing traffic safety

    Leveraging Customer-integration Experience: A Review of Influencing Factors and Implications

    Organizations have increasingly begun to co-create innovations, conduct idea competitions, or conduct crowdsourcing initiatives with customers in online communities. Yet, many customer-integration methods fail to attract sufficient customer participation and engagement. We draw on previous research to identify customers’ experience as an important determinant of whether customer-integration initiatives succeed. However, research has rarely applied the notion of experience in the context of customer integration. We conduct a cross-disciplinary literature review to identify the factors that constitute a positive customer-integration experience and the implications of the customer-integration experience. Based on 141 papers from marketing, technology and innovation management, information systems, human-computer interaction, and psychology research, we derive a framework for customer-integration experience that integrates 22 conceptually different influencing factors, 15 implications, and their interrelatedness based on motivation-hygiene theory. The framework sheds light on the current state of research on customer-integration experience and identifies possibilities for future research
