Quantum inference of states and processes

Get PDF
The maximum-likelihood principle unifies inference of quantum states and processes from experimental noisy data. Particularly, a generic quantum process may be estimated simultaneously with unknown quantum probe states provided that measurements on probe and transformed probe states are available. Drawbacks of various approximate treatments are considered.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

Search for the associated production of the Higgs boson with a top-quark pair

Get PDF
A search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with a top-quark pair t t ÂŻ H (ttÂŻH) is presented, using data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of up to 5.1 fb −1 and 19.7 fb −1 collected in pp collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV respectively. The search is based on the following signatures of the Higgs boson decay: H → hadrons, H → photons, and H → leptons. The results are characterized by an observed t t ÂŻ H ttÂŻH signal strength relative to the standard model cross section, μ = σ/σ SM ,under the assumption that the Higgs boson decays as expected in the standard model. The best fit value is μ = 2.8 ± 1.0 for a Higgs boson mass of 125.6 GeV

Measurement of prompt Jψ\psi pair production in pp collisions at \sqrt s = 7 Tev

Get PDF
Production of prompt J/ ψ meson pairs in proton-proton collisions at s s√ = 7 TeV is measured with the CMS experiment at the LHC in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 4.7 fb −1 . The two J/ ψ mesons are fully reconstructed via their decays into μ + μ − pairs. This observation provides for the first time access to the high-transverse-momentum region of J/ ψ pair production where model predictions are not yet established. The total and differential cross sections are measured in a phase space defined by the individual J/ ψ transverse momentum ( p T J/ ψ ) and rapidity (| y J/ ψ |): | y J/ ψ | 6.5 GeV/ c ; 1.2 4.5 GeV/ c . The total cross section, assuming unpolarized prompt J/ ψ pair production is 1.49 ± 0.07 (stat) ±0.13 (syst) nb. Different assumptions about the J/ ψ polarization imply modifications to the cross section ranging from −31% to +27%

Measurements of the t(t)Overbar charge asymmetry using the dilepton decay channel in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV

Get PDF
The ttÂŻ charge asymmetry in proton-proton collisions at s√ = 7 TeV is measured using the dilepton decay channel (ee, e μ , or μμ ). The data correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb −1 , collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The tt and lepton charge asymmetries, defined as the differences in absolute values of the rapidities between the reconstructed top quarks and antiquarks and of the pseudorapidities between the positive and negative leptons, respectively, are measured to be A C = −0 . 010 ± 0 . 017 (stat . ) ± 0 . 008 (syst . ) and AlepC = 0 . 009 ± 0 . 010 (stat . ) ± 0 . 006 (syst . ). The lepton charge asymmetry is also measured as a function of the invariant mass, rapidity, and transverse momentum of the ttÂŻ system. All measurements are consistent with the expectations of the standard model

Constraints on the Higgs boson width from off-shell production and decay to Z-boson pairs

Get PDF
Constraints are presented on the total width of the recently discovered Higgs boson, ΓH , using its relative on-shell and off-shell production and decay rates to a pair of Z bosons, where one Z boson decays to an electron or muon pair, and the other to an electron, muon, or neutrino pair. The analysis is based on the data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2011 and 2012, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 5.1 fb−1 at a center-of-mass energy s=7 TeV and 19.7 fb−1 at s=8 TeV . A simultaneous maximum likelihood fit to the measured kinematic distributions near the resonance peak and above the Z-boson pair production threshold leads to an upper limit on the Higgs boson width of ΓH<22 MeV at a 95% confidence level, which is 5.4 times the expected value in the standard model at the measured mass of mH=125.6 GeV

Search for heavy neutrinos and W bosons with right-handed couplings in proton - proton collisions at \sqrt = 8TeV

Get PDF
A search for heavy, right-handed neutrinos, Nℓ ( ℓ=e,μ ), and right-handed WR bosons, which arise in the left-right symmetric extensions of the standard model, has been performed by the CMS experiment. The search was based on a sample of two lepton plus two jet events collected in proton–proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1 . For models with strict left-right symmetry, and assuming only one Nℓ flavor contributes significantly to the WR decay width, the region in the two-dimensional (MWR,MNℓ) mass plane excluded at a 95 % confidence level extends to approximately MWR=3.0TeV and covers a large range of neutrino masses below the WR boson mass, depending on the value of MWR . This search significantly extends the (MWR,MNℓ) exclusion region beyond previous results. Measurement of the t-channel single-top-quark production cross section and of the |Vtb| CKM matrix element in pp collisions at SQR = 8 TeV

Get PDF
Measurements are presented of the t -channel single-top-quark production cross section in proton-proton collisions at s√ = 8 TeV. The results are based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb −1 recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC. The cross section is measured inclusively, as well as separately for top (t) and antitop (t¯) , in final states with a muon or an electron. The measured inclusive t -channel cross section is σ t -ch. = 83 . 6 ± 2 . 3 (stat.) ± 7 . 4 (syst.) pb. The single t and t¯ cross sections are measured to be σ t -ch. ( t ) = 53 . 8 ± 1 . 5 (stat.) ± 4 . 4 (syst.) pb and σ t -ch. (t¯) = 27 . 6 ± 1 . 3 (stat.) ± 3 . 7 (syst.) pb, respectively. The measured ratio of cross sections is R t -ch. = σ t -ch. (t) /σ t -ch. (t¯) = 1 . 95 ± 0 . 10 (stat.) ± 0 . 19 (syst.), in agreement with the standard model prediction. The modulus of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element V tb is extracted and, in combination with a previous CMS result at s√ = 7 TeV, a value | V tb | = 0 . 998 ± 0 . 038 (exp.) ± 0 . 016 (theo.) is obtained

Search for excited quarks in the y+jet final state in proton-proton collisions at s=8 TeV

Get PDF
A search for excited quarks decaying into the γ+jet final state is presented. The analysis is based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb −1 collected by the CMS experiment in proton–proton collisions at s=8 TeV at the LHC. Events with photons and jets with high transverse momenta are selected and the γ+jet invariant mass distribution is studied to search for a resonance peak. The 95% confidence level upper limits on the product of cross section and branching fraction are evaluated as a function of the excited quark mass. Limits on excited quarks are presented as a function of their mass and coupling strength; masses below 3.5 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level for unit couplings to their standard model partners
