Modern som välfärdssubjekt - Hur medborgare formas inom amerikansk välfärdsstyrning

The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act of 1996 dramatically reformed the U.S. welfare system. The new federal law became a fundamental change in the structure and goal of cash assistance to welfare recipients. This thesis is looking at the liberal strategies that are directed towards the citizens involved in the welfare system in the U.S. Using the theoretical perspective of governmentality, the thesis aims to highlight strategies of shaping individuals into citizens within the reform of 1996. The study is made through a textual analysis of the reform act and its policy implementation family caps. A framework constructed of the dichotomies of dependency and independency is used to analyze the material and illustrate citizen-shaping technologies. The findings in the analysis show a great emphasis on initiative building strategies and creation of norms around citizenship. A clear opposition between the understandings of dependency and independency are made visible through constructions of desirable and undesirable citizen subjects discursively. Targeting the welfare recipients own will to empower, these strategies exemplify non-interventional modes of liberal governing

”We need security, then freedom” - En fallstudie av kvinnors säkerhet under en konflikt

The purpose of this thesis is to discuss and analyze women’s security during a conflict situation, this by using a case study as a method. The case chosen is the invasion and occupation of the US-led coalition of Iraq. The period of time chosen is the years 2003-2005. By using three different approaches in feminist theory; standpoint feminism, liberal feminism and postcolonial feminism, this thesis describe, discuss and analyze three different factors that had an impact on women’s security during the occupation. The factors ‘economic’, ‘political’ and ‘public safety’ are used to analyze the impact that the US-led coalition and the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) had on women’s security. The result is, that by bringing women’s need of security to the agenda in security studies and international politics, we can see that women are the ones suffering the most during a conflict by the lack of security accordingly to all these three factors. The thesis argues in favor of reconsidering how to look at conflicts, this by starting to use gender as a tool of analysis

Jämställdhet i EU - En fallstudie om politisk påverkan och europeisk integration

Europeiska unionen (EU) utgör idag en inflytelserik plattform för att utöva politisk påverkan, något som har dragit till sig ett stort antal aktörer. Många nya politiska kanaler och möjligheter har öppnats upp i och med det europeiska samarbetet, men hur kan organisationer gå till väga för att faktiskt kunna påverka den politik som förs inom EU:s institutioner? Denna uppsats är en fallstudie av organisationen European Women´s Lobby och deras arbete för att förbättra kvinnors representation i EU. Deras arbete undersöks genom en analys av det officiella material som presenterar en av de kampanjer som organisationen driver på den europeiska plattformen. Till hjälp för denna analys användes ett teoretiskt ramverk som bygger på europeiseringsteori. Det som undersökningen har visat på är att olika aspekter av europeisering anses ha skapat både nya möjligheter samt svårigheter för att utforma och bedriva den kampanj som har studerats

Kvinnorna tar plats - En fallstudie av Närvarons politik och den Kvinnliga Representationen i Rwanda från 1994 och framåt

Denna uppsats är av en kvalitativ karaktär som analyserar och beskriver hur den kvinnliga representationen i Rwanda har gått från en minoritet till en majoritet i parlamentet samt hur detta fenomen påverkat kvinnorna i det Rwandiska samhället efter inbördeskriget och folkmordets slut 1994 och framåt. Detta har analyserats med hjälp av ett feministiskt perspektiv där vi analyserar nivåer av representation, kvinnans roll i nationsbyggandet samt Närvarons politik. Resultatet för Rwanda är relativt dystert, majoriteten av kvinnor i parlamentet har inte föranlett att kvinnornas position i det Rwandiska samhället har förändrats nämnvärt, istället har regeringen centraliserat sin makt ännu mer och de organisationer som verkade för kvinnors sak har fått ett minskat inflytande
