Leptonic Flavor Structure in the Brane Shifted Extra Dimensional Seesaw Mechanism

We discuss the leptonic flavor structure generated by a brane shifted extra dimensional seesaw model with a single right handed neutrino in the bulk. In contrast to previous works, no unitarity approximation for the $3 \times 3$ submatrix has been employed. This allows to study phenomenological signatures such as lepton flavor violating decays. A strong prediction of the model, assuming CP conservation, are the ratios of flavor violating charged lepton decay and Z decay branching ratios which are correlated with the neutrino mixing angles and the neutrino mass hierarchy. Furthermore, it is possible to obtain branching ratios for $\mu \rightarrow e \gamma$ close to the experimental bounds even with Yukawa couplings of order one.Comment: 13 pages plus appendix and references, 4 figures. v2: version accepted by EPJ

Zwischen gesellschaftlicher Vielfalt und Auflösung - ländliche Lebensverhältnisse im Wandel

"Dörfer waren gerade wegen vermuteter Besonderheiten der Lebensverhältnisse immer wieder Thema soziologischer Forschung. Auf Basis der dritten Folge einer in zwanzigjährigen Abständen durchgeführten interdisziplinären Untersuchung in zehn identischen Dörfern in Westdeutschland und vier erstmals in die Untersuchungsabfolge einbezogenen ostdeutschen Dörfern wird der Wandel der ländlichen Lebensverhältnisse analysiert. Ausgehend von der Wanderungsentwicklung als einem zentralen Indikator für die Gleichwertigkeit bzw. Ungleichwertigkeit von Lebensverhältnissen zeichnet sich eine Polarisierung ab zwischen einer dynamischen Entwicklung der Dörfer zu neuen Lebensformen und der - auf den Nordosten der neuen Bundesländer konzentrierten - Auflösung von Dörfern als Siedlungsgebilde. Im Zentrum des Wandels der Lebensformen steht die Entwicklung der ländlichen Räume zu wichtigen Stützen des Wirtschaftsstandorts Deutschland, begleitet von tiefgreifenden Veränderungen der dörflichen Sozialstruktur, die u.a. zur doppelten, faktischen und sozialen, Auflösung der vordem bildprägenden Verbindung von Dorf und Landwirtschaft führen. Der soziale Wandel kumuliert im Umbruch des Dorfes von einem wie fraglos vorgegebenen sozialen Raum zu von individuellen Wahlmöglichkeiten bestimmten sozialen Beziehungen. Im Ergebnis macht der soziale Wandel Dorf für Teilgruppen der Bevölkerung - anders als 'Stadtluft macht frei' - zum Ort der Freiheit. Die Gefahr der - (modernen) Wüstungen gleichenden - Auflösung von Dörfern im Nordosten der neuen Bundesländer geht auf säkulare, die DDR einschließende, Prozesse zurück. Der regionale Charakter der Auflösungs- und Abwanderungsgefahr wirft über die damit einhergehenden wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Verwerfungen hinaus die Frage nach der weiteren Entwicklungen dieser Räume auf." Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis: A Rare Chronic Disease, Difficult to Treat, with Potential to Lung Cancer Transformation: Apropos of Two Cases and a Brief Literature Review

Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP), which is caused exclusively by human papilloma virus (HPV), is a rare condition characterized by recurrent growth of benign papillomata in the respiratory tract. The papillomata can occur anywhere in the aerodigestive tract but most frequently in the larynx, affecting both children and adults. The management of this entity remains still challenging since no specific definitive treatment exists. Nevertheless, novel surgical interventions as well as several adjuvant therapies have shown promising results in the long-term palliative management of this debilitating disease. Despite its mostly benign nature, RRP may cause significant morbidity and mortality because of its unpredictable clinical course and especially its tendency, albeit infrequent, for malignant transformation. In this article, we present two patients with RRP; one underwent bronchoscopic laser ablation in combination with inhaled interferon-alpha administration that led to a long-term regression of the disease while the other patient was diagnosed with transformation to squamous cell lung carcinoma with fatal outcome. Interactions mediated by a public good transiently increase cooperativity in growing Pseudomonas putida metapopulations

Bacterial communities have rich social lives. A well-established interaction involves the exchange of a public good in Pseudomonas populations, where the iron-scavenging compound pyoverdine, synthesized by some cells, is shared with the rest. Pyoverdine thus mediates interactions between producers and non-producers and can constitute a public good. This interaction is often used to test game theoretical predictions on the "social dilemma" of producers. Such an approach, however, underestimates the impact of specific properties of the public good, for example consequences of its accumulation in the environment. Here, we experimentally quantify costs and benefits of pyoverdine production in a specific environment, and build a model of population dynamics that explicitly accounts for the changing significance of accumulating pyoverdine as chemical mediator of social interactions. The model predicts that, in an ensemble of growing populations (metapopulation) with different initial producer fractions (and consequently pyoverdine contents), the global producer fraction initially increases. Because the benefit of pyoverdine declines at saturating concentrations, the increase need only be transient. Confirmed by experiments on metapopulations, our results show how a changing benefit of a public good can shape social interactions in a bacterial population

Die Entwicklung des Eifelkreises Bitburg-Prüm vom peripheren Sorgenkind zu einer prosperierenden Wirtschaftsregion hat sich in einem permanenten Strukturwandel vollzogen. Sie zeigt, dass auch dünn besiedelte, wirtschaftlich strukturschwache ländliche Räume, die keine Agglomerations- und Clustervorteile aufweisen, im Standortwettbewerb bestehen können. Das Handlungsmuster regionaler Akteure im Eifelkreis war und ist, nichts unversucht zu lassen und es der Zukunft zu überlassen, was sich als erfolgreich erweisen wird. Der beeindruckend erfolgreiche Weg wäre ohne die Unterstützung von Bund und Land und die positive wirtschaftliche Entwicklung Luxemburgs nicht möglich gewesen. Marktstarke kleine und mittlere, zumeist inhabergeführte Unternehmen in unterschiedlichen Branchen und eine starke Arbeitsmarktnachfrage in Luxemburg gehen heute mit einer Arbeitslosenquote einher, die Vollbeschäftigung signalisiert. Angesichts eines im Zuge des demographischen Wandels rückläufigen Arbeitsangebots wird der Wettbewerb um Arbeitskräfte zunehmen.The development of the Eifel district Bitburg-Prüm from peripheral problem child to prosperous economic region has been accomplished in the form of permanent structural transformation. This case study demonstrates that even sparsely populated rural spaces with a weak economic structure and no agglomeration economies or clustering effects can survive in locational competition. The patterns of activity of the Eifel district actors were and continue to be characterised by a determination to leave nothing untried and then to wait and see what proves to be successful. This impressive success would not have been possible without the support of both federal and state authorities and the positive economic development of Luxemburg. Strong small and medium sized, mostly owner-managed businesses in various verticals and a large labour market demand characterise Luxemburg today, and are accompanied by an unemployment rate that indicates full employment.
