    Innovation in Micro, Small and Medium Sized Enterprises: New Product Development, Business Model Innovation and Effectuation

    Digitalization increases the need for innovation of the business models to a new high, also in micro, small and medium sized businesses (SMEs). Every third SME is engaged in Business Model Innovation (BMI) activities, but few of them in a systematic manner. Earlier empirical and theoretical research suggest that BMI is, and should be, an iterative process of adjustments in pursuit for better performance and success with New Product Development (NPD). NPD and BMI research streams use causal constructs with focus on external technology driven or market driven internal resource optimization. Studies on effectuation and bricolage, in turn, indicate that entrepreneurs’ passion, curiosity, and originality can compensate limited resources for innovation in SMEs. Building on these approaches, we propose a framework to analyze innovation in SMEs with case studies. The empirical data was collected in in Horizon2020 funded Envision project, where we use multiple case study approach. For this study, we select failed, surviving, and successful BMI cases to recommend effective BMI for SMEs and line out directions for future research

    Ecosystem Under Construction – An Action Research Study on Entrepreneurship in a Business Ecosystem

    In recent years, we have seen increasing interest in new service concepts that take advantage of the capabilities of business ecosystems instead of single companies. In this article, we describe how a business ecosystem begins to develop around a service business idea proposed by an entrepreneur. We aim to recognize the different domains of players that are or should be involved in the ecosystem while it is under construction.     Business Model Innovation in European SMEs - Descriptive analysis of quantitative survey and case survey data

    In this paper we analyse Business Model Innovation (BMI) in European micro, small and medium sized enterprises (SME). We present descriptive findings from our quantitative survey and qualitative case survey on how SMEs are innovating their Business Models. Our survey indicates that 37% of European SMEs innovate their Business Model. We found some differences in BMI depending on the age and industry sectors. We also describe the changes the SMEs make in differing Business Model components when they are improving their Business Model

    Topical Research Cluster of BLED Community – A Text Mining Approach

    The number of research publications is growing exponentially, also in the discipline of Information Systems (IS). Evidently, we need new automated means for carrying out extensive inquiries into bodies of knowledge to understand the thematic foci of publications. The aim of this study is to apply an automated cluster analysis as a method of text mining and identify thematic foci of 654 BLED conference proceedings obtained from Scopus since 2005. Subsequently, we discuss advantages and challenges associated with the automatic analysis of huge volumes of texts. Our results support scientists and practitioners to focus future research efforts on these topics and thus help to establish and investigate the identity of the IS discipline, particularly against the background of the growing diversity of topics. The results help the conference to align future calls accordingly. In the future, a prototype can be implemented based on the results to suggest suitable search results

    Platforms for Smart Fairways - Enhancing Services for Autonomous Maritime Traffic and Other Emerging Uses of Territorial Sea

    Digitalization has brough about new services to assist navigation, and first autonomous vessels are already in use. This poses also challenges to the fairways, i.e. routes on sea that are designed to secure maritime traffic with physical navigation aids. How should fairway be augmented in future? And, most importantly, how can we make it happen? We use Finnish territorial waters as an example to illustrate how on-going changes of seafaring are taken into account in design of autonomous maritime infrastructure by experts. We use multi-staged Delphi-method to derive the elements of importance for safeguarding autonomous maritime traffic. We suggest starting to improve services at critical points of present fairways. Authorities should ensure the integrity of data and services of merchant traffic first, and thereafter establish jointly an open platform where recreational user can design, try, implement, and test services to their specific needs. This reasoning stems from theoretical underpinnings of communities of interest in self-regulating their environment. The platform could also provide a viable economic solution for speeding up new valuable mobile service designs

Business Model Innovation deals with both technological and knowledge related changes that either may disrupt or sustain existing product/market strategies. Timing of Business Model Innovation both with regard to the right moment as well as speed of implementing competitive concepts becomes crucial. In this conceptual paper we discuss and evaluate possibilities for shortening the lead-time and increasing impact of Business Model Innovation aiming at low-end and new market disruptions. We are building our discussion on recent findings and identifying anomalies for further research by reflecting on exemplary business design cases
