Temperature-induced reversal of magnetic interlayer exchange coupling
For epitaxial trilayers of the magnetic rare-earth metals Gd and Tb, exchange
coupled through a non-magnetic Y spacer layer, element-specific hysteresis
loops were recorded by the x-ray magneto-optical Kerr effect at the rare-earth
thresholds. This allowed us to quantitatively determine the strength of
interlayer exchange coupling (IEC). In addition to the expected oscillatory
behavior as a function of spacer-layer thickness , a temperature-induced
sign reversal of IEC was observed for constant , arising from

X-ray magneto-optics of lanthanide materials: principles and applications
Lanthanide metals are a particular class of magnetic materials in which the
magnetic moments are carried mainly by the localized electrons of the 4f shell.
They are frequently found in technically relevant systems, to achieve, e.g.,
high magnetic anisotropy. Magneto-optical methods in the x-ray range are well
suited to study complex magnetic materials in an element-specific way. In this
work, we report on recent progress on the quantitative determination of
magneto-optical constants of several lanthanides in the soft x-ray region and
we show some examples of applications of magneto-optics to hard-magnetic
interfaces and exchange-coupled layered structures containing lanthanide

Prediction of huge X-ray Faraday rotation at the Gd N_4,5 threshold
X-ray absorption spectra in a wide energy range around the 4d-4f excitation
threshold of Gd were recorded by total electron yield from in-plane magnetized
Gd metal films. Matching the experimental spectra to tabulated absorption data
reveals unprecedented short light absorption lengths down to 3 nm. The
associated real parts of the refractive index for circularly polarized light
propagating parallel or antiparallel to the Gd magnetization, determined
through the Kramers-Kronig transformation, correspond to a magneto-optical
Faraday rotation of 0.7 degrees per atomic layer. This finding shall allow the
study of magnetic structure and magnetization dynamics of lanthanide elements

Urban roadkill assessment in Vienna reveals low incidence rates
An important factor in the decline of global animal diversity is road traffic, where many animals are killed. This study aimed to collect data on vertebrate roadkill in the city of Vienna, Austria, between 2017 and 2022 using three different approaches: citizen science, systematic monitoring by bicycle along a 15 km route, and systematic monitoring on foot along a 3 km route. During 359 monitoring events, only four roadkill incidences (three Erinaceus sp., one Rattus sp.) were found by bicycle or on foot. At the same time citizen scientists reported 1 roadkill squirrel on the bicycle route and 84 roadkill incidences for the entire city area. Hedgehogs and urban birds were commonly reported species by citizen scientists. Although no amphibian or reptile roadkill was found during systematic monitoring, they were reported by citizen scientists. The low number of roadkill incidences found suggests a potentially low population density that makes the impact of roadkill even more severe – a hypothesis that should be further investigated amidst the global decline in biodiversity.</p

Citizen science, the active participation of the public in scientific research projects, is a rapidly expanding field in open science and open innovation. It provides an integrated model of public knowledge production and engagement with science. As a growing worldwide phenomenon, it is invigorated by evolving new technologies that connect people easily and effectively with the scientific community. Catalysed by citizens’ wishes to be actively involved in scientific processes, as a result of recent societal trends, it also offers contributions to the rise in tertiary education. In addition, citizen science provides a valuable tool for citizens to play a more active role in sustainable development.
This book identifies and explains the role of citizen science within innovation in science and society, and as a vibrant and productive science-policy interface. The scope of this volume is global, geared towards identifying solutions and lessons to be applied across science, practice and policy. The chapters consider the role of citizen science in the context of the wider agenda of open science and open innovation, and discuss progress towards responsible research and innovation, two of the most critical aspects of science today

Case report: C-reactive protein apheresis in cardiogenic shock: case series from the C-reactive protein apheresis in acute myocardial infarction-registry
C-reactive protein (CRP) apheresis may preserve myocardial tissue after acute myocardial infarction with delayed revascularization. Ten consecutive patients with cardiogenic shock were graded using the Society of Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions shock classification and treated with CRP apheresis. All patients tolerated CRP apheresis well and were discharged in good clinical condition
