    The subject matter of the present project are investigations of new coating techniques and advanced coatings with regard to their corrosion control potential for aviation relevant metallic materials. These techniques were selected from the supply of available vapor deposition methods. The results obtained from aviation relevant materials (Al alloys, Ti alloys, staining and stainless steels) using the deposition methods IBAD, magnetron sputtering and arc deposition permit the following conclusions: In general, vapor deposited aluminum coatings with additions of Mg, Li, etc., substituting Cadmium/Chromium, are suitable for corrosion control of steels; using CrN or AlN as additional topcoat also ensures a good friction characteristic or simultaneous wearing protection; hardcoatings, in particular those containing carbon, on stainless steels and titanium alloys are resistant to artificial climates and offer very high wearing protection. In contact with aluminum, however, they lead to increased corrosion depending on their carbon content. Aluminum coatings can be applied to Al alloys with high adhesion at low temperatures by means of IBAD and magnetron sputtering. They are suitable as a substitute for Al platings on milled parts.     Quantitative measurements of temperature and species concentration is critical when developing combustion models. A method for measuring temperatures using two-line laser-induced fluorescence of hot oxygen is presented. This scheme was investigated in high-pressure flames in respect of quenching and energy transfer processes in the excited state. This technique was suited to gain two-dimensional temperature distributions in high pressure flames. Quantitative detection of nitric oxide concentration distribution also requires detailed spectroscopic studies of spectral properties under high pressure conditions. Investigations on NO in high pressure flames are presented yielding an optimized scheme for detecting NO in technical combustion processes. This scheme is used for measuring NO distributions in an IC engine. Simultaneous temperature fields are obtained via 2D-Rayleigh scattering. A new excitation source for detecting NO via LIF, using a tunable KrCl excimer laser is presented and characterized.     Quantitative detection of hydroxyl (OH) radical concentrations in the exhaust gases of jet engines is important for checking models simulating atmospheric processes in the plume. Oxidation of nitric and sulfuric species which occurs rapidly in the exhaust gases which is mainly due to reactions with OH gives the starting point for the formation of particles in the plume gases. A laser spectroscopic system with spectrally resolved detection upon excimer-laser exitation was for the first time installed in a jet engine test facility. With the measurements an upper limit for the OH concentration was obtained which is about a factor of 20 below the results of the simulation calculations.
