    Catalytic Performance for Hydrocarbon Production from Syngas on the Promoted Co-Based Hybrid Catalysts; Influence of Pt Contents

    Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) reaction from syngas was investigated on the Pt-promoted cobalt-based hybrid catalysts prepared by co-precipitation method in a slurry of ZSM-5 (Si/Al=25). The hybrid catalysts were compared with each other for the different content of Pt as a promoter and are characterized using BET, XRD, H2-TPR and NH3-TPD. Their physicochemical properties were correlated with the activity and selectivity of the catalysts. As results, all hybrid catalysts show the C5-C9 yield (%) higher than that of Co-Al2O3/ZSM-5 catalyst. The Pt-promoted hybrid catalysts were found to be more promising towards production of the hydrocarbons of gasoline range and over C10.

    Efficacy and safety of daclatasvir and asunaprevir for hepatitis C virus genotype 1b infection

    Background/Aims: The treatment strategy for hepatitis C virus (HCV) has been changing rapidly since the introduction of direct-acting antivirals such as daclatasvir (DCV) and asunaprevir (ASV). We evaluated the efficacy and safety of DCV and ASV for HCV in real-life practice. Methods: Patients were treated with 60 mg of DCV once daily plus 200 mg of ASV twice daily for 24 weeks, and followed for 12 weeks. The primary endpoint was a sustained virological response at 12 weeks after treatment (SVR12) and safety. Results: This retrospective study included eight patients with chronic HCV genotype 1b infection. All of the enrolled patients were diagnosed with liver cirrhosis, and their mean age was 65.75 years. One patient was a nonresponder and two patients relapsed with previous pegylated interferon (PegIFN) and ribavirin (RBV) treatment. None of the patient showed NS5A mutation. An SVR12 was achieved in 88% of cases by the DCV and ASV combination therapy. The serum transaminase level and the aspartate-aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio were improved after the treatment. DCV and ASV were well tolerated in most of the patients, with treatment discontinuation due to adverse events (elevated liver enzyme and decompensation) occurring in two patients. Conclusion: In this study, combination of DCV and ASV treatment achieved a high sustained virological response with few adverse events even in those with cirrhosis, advanced age, and nonresponse/relapse to previous interferon-based therapy. Close monitoring of safety issues may be necessary when treating chronic HCV patients receiving DCV and ASV, especially in older patient and those with cirrhosis

    Sleeve Lobectomy as an Alternative Procedure to Pneumonectomy for Non-small Cell Lung Cancer

    IntroductionThe aim of this study is to compare the outcomes of sleeve lobectomy (SL) and pneumonectomy (PN) and to determine which one is more acceptable standard procedure for patients with non-small cell lung cancer.MethodsFrom 1996 to 2005, 424 patients underwent SL (n = 157) and PN (n = 267) in our institution. Propensity score matching analysis was performed to compare these two groups for mortality, morbidity, survival, recurrence, and postoperative pulmonary function.ResultsIn each group, 105 patients were eligible for analysis. The operative mortality was lower in the SL group (1.0%) than the PN group (8.6%), (p < 0.0001). The morbidity was similar (33.4% versus 29.5%, p = 0.376). The 5-year survival was lower in the PN group (PN, 32.14% versus SL, 58.43%, p = 0.0002). The recurrence pattern (locoregional versus distant) did not differ between two groups (p = 0.180). The mean actual postoperative first second forced expiratory volume in the patients underwent SL was 2.05 ± 0.55 liter, which increased by 7.9% compared with the predicted-postoperative first second forced expiratory volume.ConclusionsOur results showed that the SL can be performed with low operative risk and may offer superior survival and better postoperative pulmonary function compared with the PN in selected patients. If anatomically feasible, a SL must be considered as a favorable alternative to PN in patients with non-small cell lung cancer

    Plastid Phylogenomics of Dendroseris (Cichorieae; Asteraceae): Insights Into Structural Organization and Molecular Evolution of an Endemic Lineage From the Juan Fernández Islands

    This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.Dendroseris D. Don comprises 11 species endemic to the Juan Fernández islands in Chile. They demonstrate spectacular and unusual growth forms of rosette trees with extremely variable morphology and occupy wide ecological ranges on the islands. These unique plants are now highly threatened with extinction with very small population sizes, typically consisting of 10 or fewer individuals in wild. Despite morphological and ecological divergence among species of Dendroseris, their monophyly has been supported in previous studies, but with little resolution among subgeneric groups. We assembled seven complete plastome sequences from seven species of Dendroseris, including representatives from three subgenera, and carried out comparative phylogenomic analyses. The plastomes are highly conserved in gene content and order, with size ranging from 152,199 to 152,619 bp and containing 130 genes (87 coding genes, 6 rRNA genes, and 37 tRNA genes). Plastid phylogenomic analyses based on both the complete plastome sequences and 81 concatenated coding genes only show Dendroseris nested within Sonchus sensu lato, and also that inter-subgeneric relationships are fully resolved. Subg. Phoenicoseris is resolved as sister to the remaining species of the genus and a sister relationship between the two subgenera Dendroseris and Rea. Ten mutation hotspots from LSC and SSC regions and variable SSRs are identified as potential chloroplast markers for future phylogenetic and phylogeographic studies of Sonchus and related groups.Basic Science Research Program through the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) (NRF-2019R1A2C2009841

    Hepatitis C Virus Core Protein Inhibits Interleukin 12 and Nitric Oxide Production from Activated Macrophages

    AbstractA characteristic feature of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a high frequency of persistence and the progression to chronic liver diseases. Recent data suggest that prevalent T helper (Th) 2 immunity as well as weak HCV-specific T-cell response is associated with viral persistence. Here, we showed that the production of interleukin 12 (IL-12) and nitric oxide (NO) that is critical for the induction of Th1 and innate immunity, but not that of tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), was significantly suppressed in both HCV core-expressing macrophage cell lines and mouse peritoneal macrophages treated with recombinant core protein. In addition, IL-12 p40 promoter activity was repressed by the presence of HCV core in macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharride (LPS) following IFN-γ treatment, indicating that IL-12 production may be downregulated at the transcriptional level. We also found that proliferation of T cells and IFN-γ production in mixed lymphocyte reactions (MLR) with core-expressing cells were inhibited. Taken together, our results suggest that HCV core protein could play roles in suppressing the induction of Th1 immunity through inhibition of IL-12 and NO production

    Fogarty balloon application technique in dislodging residual thrombus on the single sheath entry point at the apex of thrombosed loop grafts

    PURPOSEWe aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Fogarty balloon application in dislodging residual thrombus at the sheath en- try point in a graft by using single apex puncture to declot thrombosed hemodialysis loop grafts. MATERIALS AND METHODSThe apex puncture technique was used in 520 cases to declot 376 hemodialysis loop grafts (male/female, 150/226; mean age, 58 years). The Fogarty balloon application technique, which uses the Fogarty balloon to the apex, was used to compress or displace the sheath entry point residual thrombus that did not wash away spontaneously by arterial . The frequency of the use of the technique, technical success, com- plications, and primary patency were evaluated. RESULTSSheath entry point thrombi were washed away spontane- ously in 281 of 520 procedures (54%), and 184 procedures (35.4%) underwent a Fogarty balloon application. For a vari- ety of reasons, the Fogarty balloon application technique was not performed in the remaining 55 procedures (10.6%). The technique was successful in 171 of 184 procedures (92.9%), and failed in 13 procedures, which required additional sheath insertion for the removal of sheath entry point thrombus. Complications included sheath dislodgment from the apex during Fogarty ballooning in one procedure and puncture site bleeding in one procedure. Primary patency was 60%, 35.2%, and 15.3% at 3, 6, and 12 months postprocedure, respectively. CONCLUSIONThe Fogarty balloon application technique is safe and useful for the removal of residual thrombus at the apical, peri-sheath zone when declotting occluded hemodialysis loop grafts
