    THE KOREAN PRESS IN JAPAN AFTER WORLD WAR II AND ITS CENSORSHIP BY OCCUPATION AUTHORITIES

    This study deals with censorship of the Korean language press in Japan by the American occupation after World War II. It focuses on the social roles of mass media in a minority community when there were harsh media controls such as discriminatory printing paper allocation as well as censorship. It finds that, in spite of the government control, the press continued to play social roles such as community integration, identity formation, and agenda setting. The dissertation represents the first scholarly examination of 19 Korean newspapers, including one for women, and 14 magazines published by Koreans in Japan during the occupation. It is based on previously unavailable material recently opened to researchers as part of the Gordon W. Prange Collection at the University of Maryland. Therefore, the entire dissertation is the only study to date of Korean publications in Japan during the occupation. This study reveals the contents of articles scheduled to appear in Korean publications that were suppressed by censors. Through this study, the voices of suppressed Korean speakers have been revived and can, for the first time, be heard in on an open forum. Even though the voices represent quite different ideological factions, those of the leftwing, rightwing, and mid-road, the study concludes that Korean publications in Japan, reflecting the yearnings of Koreans in Japan, zeroed in on a consensus: Korea is one; therefore, the homeland should overcome the division over North and South and develop a unified nation. This study shows how a marginalized ethnic minority group, the Koreans in Japan under the Japanese government and American occupation authorities, recognized themselves as members of the same community belonging to one homeland in spite of their geographical distance from it. It demonstrates the fact that journalism under conditions of harsh control may negotiate with the authorities, or attempt to circumvent control. The study also brings out the fact that, from a freedom of the press view, controlling the physical media of communication [printing paper] may be more damaging than control of the contents of communication [censorship]

    Inscribing or Circumscribing a Histogon to a Convex Polygon

    We consider two optimization problems of approximating a convex polygon, one by a largest inscribed histogon and the other by a smallest circumscribed histogon. An axis-aligned histogon is an axis-aligned rectilinear polygon such that every horizontal edge has an integer length. A histogon of orientation ? is a copy of an axis-aligned histogon rotated by ? in counterclockwise direction. The goal is to find a largest inscribed histogon and a smallest circumscribed histogon over all orientations in [0,?). Depending on whether the horizontal width of a histogon is predetermined or not, we consider several different versions of the problem and present exact algorithms. These optimization problems belong to shape analysis, classification, and simplification, and they have applications in various cost-optimization problems

    Health-Care Networks and the Impact of Maternal Health Care Projects – the Cases of Peru and Bolivia

    This paper shows that the evaluation of health projects can be inaccurate when it only considers the direct health-care services provided by health facilities, and that the effects on the entire healthcare network must be considered. In Peru's case, we found that an important effect of a new health facility is the improved service quality in the neighbouring facilities. In Bolivia's case, we found that an improvement of maternal health care service in one hospital may just reduce the demand for medical services in other primary health facilities without significantly affecting the overall performance of the health-care network

    Universal convex covering problems under translation and discrete rotations

    We consider the smallest-area universal covering of planar objects of perimeter 2 (or equivalently closed curves of length 2) allowing translation and discrete rotations. In particular, we show that the solution is an equilateral triangle of height 1 when translation and discrete rotation of π\pi are allowed. Our proof is purely geometric and elementary. We also give convex coverings of closed curves of length 2 under translation and discrete rotations of multiples of π/2\pi/2 and 2π/32\pi/3. We show a minimality of the covering for discrete rotation of multiples of π/2\pi/2, which is an equilateral triangle of height smaller than 1, and conjecture that the covering is the smallest-area convex covering. Finally, we give the smallest-area convex coverings of all unit segments under translation and discrete rotations 2π/k2\pi/k for all integers k3k\ge 3

    THE EFFECT OF SHOULDER MOBILITY ON AGONIST AND SYNERGIST DURING SHOULDER PRESS

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of shoulder mobility score on agonist and synergist muscle activation during shoulder press and to provide an underpinning fundamental to optimize the training effect while reducing the risk of injuries when instructing training in the field. The participants were divided to two different groups according to individual shoulder mobility score which is part of the Functional Movement Screen (FMS). There were five participants in the score of 3 group (upper group) and six included in the group with the score of less than 3 (lower group).     Effect of exposure energy dose on lateral resolution and flexural strength of three-dimensionally printed dental zirconia.

    PURPOSE This study aims to evaluate the effects of exposure energy on the lateral resolution and mechanical strength of dental zirconia manufactured using digital light processing (DLP). MATERIALS AND METHODS A zirconia suspension and a custom top-down DLP printer were used for in-office manufacturing. The viscosity of the suspension and uniformity of the exposed light intensity were controlled. Based on the exposure energy dose delivered to each layer, the specimens were classified into three groups: low-energy (LE), medium-energy (ME), and high-energy (HE). For each energy group, a simplified molar cube was used to measure the widths of the outline (Xo and Yo) and isthmus (Xi and Yi), and a bar-shaped specimen of the sintered body was tested. A Kruskal-Wallis test for the lateral resolution and one-way analysis of variance for the mechanical strength were performed (α = .05). RESULTS The zirconia green bodies of the ME group showed better lateral resolution than those of the LE and HE groups (both P < .001). Regarding the flexural strength of the sintered bodies, the ME group had the highest mean value, whereas the LE group had the lowest mean value (both P < .05). The ME group exhibited fewer agglomerates than the LE group, with no distinctive interlayer pores or surface defects. CONCLUSION Based on these findings, the lateral resolution of the green body and flexural strength of the sintered body of dental zirconia could be affected by the exposure energy dose during DLP. The exposure energy should be optimized when fabricating DLP-based dental zirconia

    A STUDY ON THE ESTIMATION METHOD OF THE FORM FACTOR FOR A FULL-SCALE SHIP

    In this study, a prediction method of the form factor for a full-scale ship is suggested to minimize the power prediction error from a small model ship. Numerical simulations were carried out at various Reynolds numbers from a small model to a full-scale ship. The variation of the form factors was investigated from the results of the numerical simulation according to the Reynolds numbers. In addition, the results from the numerical simulations and experimental data of the geosim models were utilized to drive the correlation line and predict the form factor of a full-scale ship. The correlation line was applied to predict the effective power and the delivered power of a full-scale ship. As a result, the developed prediction method confirmed the possibility of predicting the power reliably from experiments using a small model
