    Department of Energy EngineeringThe synthesis of carbon-based heteroatom doped materials attracted many interests as well as its unique, extraordinary and controllable chemical/physical properties which can drive their infinite potential applications. Extended synthetic approaches for new materials allows that improve processability and performance to utilize its own superiority to the maximum. In here, research overview and objective carried out during my master???s degree, will be discussed. The dissertation consists of mainly two chapters: 1) Design and synthesis of two-dimensional sheet-like BBL structure (2D-BBLs). The 2D-BBLs were successfully synthesized via double condensation reaction of amine and between amine (-NH2) and mellitic trianhydride (MTA) in polyphosphoric acid (PPA) medium. The strategy to extend conjugated ladder polymer into two-dimension by using the effective condensation reaction have the possibility to utilize rigid ladder polymer with tailored properties for future applications. 2) Synthesis of triphenylene-based covalent triazine networks (sTP-CTNs) in the presence of gaseous catalyst, HCl, via solid-state reaction. Compared with conventional synthetic approaches to form triazine-based materials, there are some advantages such as clean and efficient work-up process, solvent-free mild reaction conditions.clos

    AbstractThis study was to investigate the production of reducing sugars in hydrolysates from raw and deoiled Laminaria japonica produced by subcritical water hydrolysis. Deoiled Laminaria japonica was collected by supercritical carbon dioxide (SCO2) extraction process. Experiments were performed in a batch-type reactor with stirring. It investigated that the effects of reaction temperature and acetic acid as catalyst on content of reducing sugar production. The addition of acetic acid led to an increase in content of reducing sugar. But Removal of oil in Laminaria japonica by SCO2 and increasing of temperature led to decrease in content of reducing sugar production. The highest content of reducing sugar was 814.10mg/100g raw dried sample at 200°C, adding of 1% acetic acid as catalyst

    Fate and toxicity of spilled chemicals in groundwater and soil environment I: strong acids

    We reviewed the chemical/physical properties, toxicity, environmental fate, and ecotoxicity of strong acids in soil and groundwater environments. We recommend that sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid be classified as chemicals of priority control based on volumes used, toxicity, carcinogenicity, and past significant spill events. Understanding the behavior and transport of spilled strong acids in soil and groundwater environments requires a multi-disciplinary approach, as they can undergo a variety of geochemical and biochemical reactions with complex geomedia. The toxicity of spilled acid is dependent on the characteristics of the geomedia exposed to the acid and the amount of residual protons following acid–substrate interaction. Soil texture, cation exchange capacity, mineral composition, bedrock type, and aluminum content may be important factors affecting the toxicity of spilled acid in soil-groundwater environments. We expect that the results of this study will contribute preliminary data for future research on chemical spills

    A generalization of identities in groupoids by functions

    In this paper, we introduce the notions of a left and a right idenfunction in a groupoid by using suitable functions, and we apply this concept to several algebraic structures. Especially, we discuss its role in linear groupoids over a field. We show that, given an invertible function φ, there exists a groupoid such that φ is a right idenfunction. The notion of a right pseudo semigroup will be discussed in linear groupoids. The notion of an inversal is a generalization of an inverse element, and it will be discussed with idenfunctions in linear groupoids over a field

    A Novel Selective Sphingosine Kinase 2 Inhibitor, HWG-35D, Ameliorates the Severity of Imiquimod-Induced Psoriasis Model by Blocking Th17 Differentiation of Naïve CD4 T Lymphocytes

    Sphingosine kinases (SK) catalyze the phosphorylation of sphingosine to generate sphingosine-1-phosphate. Two isoforms of SK (SK1 and SK2) exist in mammals. Previously, we showed the beneficial effects of SK2 inhibition, using ABC294640, in a psoriasis mouse model. However, ABC294640 also induces the degradation of SK1 and dihydroceramide desaturase 1 (DES1). Considering these additional effects of ABC294640, we re-examined the efficacy of SK2 inhibition in an IMQ-induced psoriasis mouse model using a novel SK2 inhibitor, HWG-35D, which exhibits nM potency and 100-fold selectivity for SK2 over SK1. Topical application of HWG-35D ameliorated IMQ-induced skin lesions and normalized the serum interleukin-17A levels elevated by IMQ. Application of HWG-35D also decreased skin mRNA levels of interleukin-17A, K6 and K16 genes induced by IMQ. Consistent with the previous data using ABC294640, HWG-35D also blocked T helper type 17 differentiation of naive CD4+ T cells with concomitant reduction of SOCS1. Importantly, HWG-35D did not affect SK1 or DES1 expression levels. These results reaffirm an important role of SK2 in the T helper type 17 response and suggest that highly selective and potent SK2 inhibitors such as HWG-35D might be of therapeutic use for the treatment of psoriasis

    Down-regulation of phospholipase D during differentiation of mouse F9 teratocarcinoma cells

    AbstractPhospholipase D has been recognized as playing an important role in signal transduction in many types of cells. We investigated the expression of phospholipase D during the differentiation of F9 embryonal teratocarcinoma cells. The ADP ribosylation factor-dependent phospholipase D activity, as measured by an in vitro assay, and H2O2-induced phospholipase D activity and phospholipase D protein content in whole cells were decreased during the differentiation of F9 cells induced by a combination of dibutyryl cyclic AMP and all-trans retinoic acid. In contrast, these changes were not observed when cells were induced by retinoic acid. These results suggest that down-regulation of phospholipase D protein is associated with differentiation of F9 cells to a parietal endoderm lineage

    Effects on Growth and Osteogenic Differentiation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells by the Zinc-Added Sol-Gel Bioactive Glass Granules

    Responses of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) cultured with zinc-added (2 and 5%) bioactive glass granules were evaluated in terms of cell growth and osteogenic differentiation. MSCs were cultured with different quantities (3, 10 and 30) of glass granules for up to 21 days in the osteogenic medium. Cell growth was stimulated by a small quantity of glasses, particularly those that contained zinc. Osteogenic differentiation, as assessed by alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP) activity, was significantly enhanced by the glasses, particularly with large quantities of glass and for prolonged culturing. Expression of bone-sialo protein (BSP) was significantly up-regulated around the bioactive glass granules. Moreover, the zinc addition significantly altered the ALP and BSP depending on the culture time and glass quantity. Cellular mineralization was improved in all glass samples, and particularly in the 2% zinc-glass. Taken together, the zinc addition to bioactive glass induced the MSCs growth and their osteogenic differentiation, at least to the level of zinc-free glass, and with even higher level observed depending on the quantity and culture time. These findings indicate that the zinc addition to bioactive glass may be useful in development of biomaterials for the stimulation of adult stem cell in bone tissue engineering
