    Quark Recombination and Heavy Quark Diffusion in Hot Nuclear Matter

    We discuss resonance recombination for quarks and show that it is compatible with quark and hadron distributions in local thermal equilibrium. We then calculate realistic heavy quark phase space distributions in heavy ion collisions using Langevin simulations with non-perturbative T-matrix interactions in hydrodynamic backgrounds. We hadronize the heavy quarks on the critical hypersurface given by hydrodynamics after constructing a criterion for the relative recombination and fragmentation contributions. We discuss the influence of recombination and flow on the resulting heavy meson and single electron R_AA and elliptic flow.     The Reactivity of MgB2 with Common Substrate and Electronic Materials

    The reactivity of MgB2 with powdered forms of common substrate and electronic materials is reported. Reaction temperatures between 600 C and 800 C, encompassing the range commonly employed in thin-film fabrication, were studied. The materials tested for reactivity were ZrO2, yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ), MgO, Al2O3, SiO2, SrTiO3, TiN, TaN, AlN, Si, and SiC. At 600 C, MgB2 reacted only with SiO2 and Si. At 800 C, however, reactions were observed for MgB2 with Al2O3, SiO2, Si, SiC, and SrTiO3. The Tc of MgB2 decreased in the reactions with SiC and Al2O3.Comment: 5 figure

    Covariant entropy conjecture and concordance cosmological models

    Recently a covariant entropy conjecture has been proposed for dynamical horizons. We apply this conjecture to concordance cosmological models, namely, those cosmological models filled with perfect fluids, in the presence of a positive cosmological constant. As a result, we find this conjecture has a severe constraint power. Not only does this conjecture rule out those cosmological models disfavored by the anthropic principle, but also it imposes an upper bound 10−6010^{-60} on the cosmological constant for our own universe, which thus provides an alternative macroscopic perspective for understanding the long-standing cosmological constant problem.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, JHEP style, references added, published versio

    Effect of temperature-dependent shape anisotropy on coercivity with aligned Stoner-Wohlfarth soft ferromagnets

    The temperature variation effect of shape anisotropy on the coercivity, HC(T), for the aligned Stoner-Wohlfarth (SW) soft ferromagnets, such as fcc Ni, fcc Co and bcc Fe, are investigated within the framework of Neel-Brown (N-B) analysis. An extended N-B equation is thus proposed,by introducing a single dimensionless correction function, the reduced magnetization, m(\tao) = MS(T)/MS(0), in which \tao = T/TC is the reduced temperature, MS(T) is the saturation magnetization, and TC is the Curie temperature. The factor, m(\tao), accounts for the temperature-dependent effect of the shape anisotropy. The constants, H0 and E0, are for the switching field at zero temperature and the potential barrier at zero field, respectively. According to this newly derived equation, the blocking temperature above which the properties of superparamagnetism show up is described by the expression, TB = E0m^2(\tao)/[kBln(t/t0)], with the extra correction factor m^2(\tao). The possible effect on HC(T) and the blocking temperature, TB, attributed to the downshift of TC resulting from the finite size effect has been discussed also.Comment: 22 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, Accepted by Phys.     Constraints on the phase γ\gamma and new physics from B→KπB\to K\pi Decays

    Recent results from CLEO on B→KπB\to K\pi indicate that the phase γ\gamma may be substantially different from that obtained from other fit to the KM matrix elements in the Standard Model. We show that γ\gamma extracted using B→Kπ,ππB\to K\pi, \pi\pi is sensitive to new physics occurring at loop level. It provides a powerful method to probe new physics in electroweak penguin interactions. Using effects due to anomalous gauge couplings as an example, we show that within the allowed ranges for these couplings information about γ\gamma obtained from B→Kπ,ππB\to K \pi, \pi\pi can be very different from the Standard Model prediction.Comment: Revised version with analysis done using new data from CLEO.     (13)C NMR investigation of the superconductor MgCNi_3 up to 800K

    We report (13)C NMR characterization of the new superconductor MgCNi_3 (He et al., Nature (411), 54 (2001)). We found that both the uniform spin susceptibility and the spin fluctuations show a strong enhancement with decreasing temperature, and saturate below ~50K and ~20K respectively. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/(13)T_1T exhibits typical behaviour for isotropic s-wave superconductivity with a coherence peak below Tc=7.0K that grows with decreasing magnetic field.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letter

    Checking the transverse Ward-Takahashi relation at one loop order in 4-dimensions

    Some time ago Takahashi derived so called {\it transverse} relations relating Green's functions of different orders to complement the well-known Ward-Green-Takahashi identities of gauge theories by considering wedge rather than inner products. These transverse relations have the potential to determine the full fermion-boson vertex in terms of the renormalization functions of the fermion propagator. He & Yu have given an indicative proof at one-loop level in 4-dimensions. However, their construct involves the 4th rank Levi-Civita tensor defined only unambiguously in 4-dimensions exactly where the loop integrals diverge. Consequently, here we explicitly check the proposed transverse Ward-Takahashi relation holds at one loop order in dd-dimensions, with d=4+ϵd=4+\epsilon.Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures This version corrects and clarifies the previous result.
