Molecular cloning and characterization of a novel expressed sequence tag (EST) associated with fecundity in goats

    Get PDF
To screen the genes controlling the fecundity traits in goats, a DDRT-PCR technique was applied. We found a new EST which highly expressed in Chinese native prolific goat breed, Haimen goats. There exists a difference of EST expression level between the prolific and non-prolific goat breed, indicating EST might associate to fecundity in goats. A full-length cDNA with 2253 base pairs was obtained by the 3’- and 5’-RACE method based on the EST sequence encoding a protein segment of 201 amino acid residues. Tissue specific distribution and sequence analysis implicated the likely involvement of EST in the regulation of the hormones related to fecundity

Nano-twining and deformation-induced martensitic transformation in a duplex stainless steel 2205 fabricated by laser powder bed fusion

Duplex stainless steels (DSSs) possess desirable combinations of mechanical properties and excellent corrosion resistance due to their composition and equilibrium microstructure of roughly equivalent fractions of ferrite and austenite. They are used in harsh environments such as marine infrastructures, oil & gas, and paper & pulp industries. Components with complex geometries are often required for these applications. Additive manufacturing (AM) techniques such as laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) can be harnessed to fabricate components with greatest complexity. However, AM fabrication is well-known to promote non-equilibrium microstructures with high dislocation densities and Cr2N precipitates, resulting in inferior ductility. This is generally regarded as a challenge, however, short heat treatments of such as-built microstructures have been shown to attain refined duplex equilibrium microstructures. Recently, annealed LPBF DSS 2205 has been reported to possess strength higher than wrought counterparts and ductility properties better than the as-built state. However, the microstructural phenomena and deformation mechanisms behind these attractive properties remain poorly understood. Through multi-scale microstructural characterization, we show that the improved strength results not only from the hard ferrite phase, but also fine austenite grain size and nanoscale oxide dispersion strengthening. The enhanced ductility may be attributed to a combination of deformation mechanisms including dislocation slip, stacking fault formation, deformation twinning, and a deformation-induced martensitic transformation. We discuss how the level of microstructural complexity and solid-state phase transformations during LPBF and annealing can unlock multiple strengthening mechanisms during tensile deformation. Such fundamental understanding is crucial for designing AM parts with reproducible and optimised mechanical properties

Phytochemical Constituents and Pharmacological Activities of Plants from the Genus Adiantum: A Review

    Get PDF
Adiantum is a genus of ca. 200 species in the family Adiantaceae, distributed extensively across the world from cool temperate zones to hot tropical regions. A lot of Adiantum species have been used in traditional Chinese medicine to cure human and animal diseases including relief of internal heat or fever, enhancement of urination, removal of urinary calculus, and sundry other curative claims. Chemical studies have shown the presence of various classes of compounds, the main ones being triterpenoids, flavonoids, phenyl propanoids, steroids, alicyclic acids, lipids and long-chain compounds. The extract of this genus as well as pure compounds isolated from it have been demonstrated to possess multiple pharmacological activities such as analgesic, antinociceptive, anti-implantation, and antimicrobial activities. In this review, we have addressed the phytochemistry and pharmacological activities of the Adiantum species in order to collate existing information on this plant as well as highlight its multi-activity properties as a medicinal agent. Keywords: Adiantum species, Adiantaceae, Phytochemical constituents, Pharmacological activities

Intensive expression of Bmi-1 is a new independent predictor of poor outcome in patients with ovarian carcinoma

    Get PDF
Background: It has been suggested that the B-cell specific moloney leukemia virus insertion site 1 (Bmi-1) gene plays an oncogenic role in several types of human cancer, but the status of Bmi-1 amplification and expression in ovarian cancer and its clinical/prognostic significance are unclear. Methods: The methods of immunohistochemistry and fluorescence in situ hybridization were utilized to examine protein expression and amplification of Bmi-1 in 30 normal ovaries, 30 ovarian cystadenomas, 40 borderline ovarian tumors and 179 ovarian carcinomas. Results: Intensive expression of Bmi-1 was detected in none of the normal ovaries, 3% cystadenomas, 10% borderline tumors, and 37% ovarian carcinomas, respectively. Amplification of Bmi-1 was detected in 8% of ovarian carcinomas. In ovarian carcinomas, significant positive associations were found between intensive expression of Bmi-1 and the tumors ascending histological grade, later pT/pN/pM and FIGO stages (P < 0.05). In univariate survival analysis of the ovarian carcinoma cohorts, a significant association of intensive expression of Bmi-1 with shortened patient survival (mean 49.3 months versus 100.3 months, p < 0.001) was demonstrated. Importantly, Bmi-1 expression provided significant independent prognostic parameters in multivariate analysis (p = 0.005).Conclusions: These findings provide evidence that intensive expression of Bmi-1 might be important in the acquisition of an invasive and/or aggressive phenotype of ovarian carcinoma, and serve as a independent biomarker for shortened survival time of patients. © 2010 Yang et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.published_or_final_versio

Lumbar spinal stenosis: an update on the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment

    Get PDF
Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is a common spinal disorder in the older population, and the clinical syndrome consisting of pain in the buttock or lower extremity, with or without low back pain and corresponding imaging findings of narrowing of spaces around neural and vascular elements in the lumbar spine. The diagnosis depends on history, symptoms, physical examination, radiographies. Varieties of non-operative and operative options are available for LSS patients. In this article, an update on the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of LSS was reviewed.published_or_final_versio
