Knowledge acquisition in supply chain partnerships: The role of power

Copyright @ 2013 Elsevier B.V.Knowledge is recognised as an important source of competitive advantage and hence there has been increasing academic and practitioner interest in understanding and isolating the factors that contribute to effective knowledge transfer between supply chain actors. The literature identifies power as a salient contributor to the effective operation of a supply chain partnership. However, there is a paucity of empirical research examining how power among actors influences knowledge acquisition and in turn the performance of supply chain partners. The aim of this research is to address this gap by examining the relationship between power, knowledge acquisition and supply chain performance among the supply chain partners of a focal Chinese steel manufacturer. A structured survey was used to collect the necessary data. Two conceptually independent variables – ‘availability of alternatives’ and ‘restraint in the use of power’ – were used to assess actual and realised power, respectively. Controlling for contingencies, we found that the flow of knowledge increased when supply chain actors had limited alternatives and when the more powerful actor exercised restraint in the use of power. Moreover, we found a positive relationship between knowledge acquisition and supply chain performance. Entanglement and dynamical phase transition in a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate
Characterizing quantum phase transitions through quantum correlations has
been deeply developed for a long time, while the connections between dynamical
phase transitions (DPTs) and quantum entanglement is not yet well understood.
In this work, we show that the time-averaged two-mode entanglement in the spin
space reaches a maximal value when it undergoes a DPT induced by external
perturbation in a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate. We employ the
von Neumann entropy and a correlation-based entanglement criterion as
entanglement measures and find that both of them can infer the existence of
DPT. While the von Neumann entropy works only for a pure state at zero
temperature and requires state tomography to reconstruct, the experimentally
more feasible correlation-based entanglement criterion acts as an excellent
proxy for entropic entanglement and can determine the existence of entanglement
for a mixed state at finite temperature, making itself an excellent indicator
for DPT. Our work provides a deeper understanding about the connection between
DPTs and quantum entanglement, and may allow the detection of DPT via
entanglement become accessible as the examined criterion is suitable for

Event-based recursive distributed filtering over wireless sensor networks
In this technical note, the distributed filtering problem is investigated for a class of discrete time-varying systems with an event-based communication mechanism. Each intelligent sensor node transmits the data to its neighbors only when the local innovation violates a predetermined Send-on-Delta (SoD) data transmission condition. The aim of the proposed problem is to construct a distributed filter for each sensor node subject to sporadic communications over wireless networks. In terms of an event indicator variable, the triggering information is utilized so as to reduce the conservatism in the filter analysis. An upper bound for the filtering error covariance is obtained in form of Riccati-like difference equations by utilizing the inductive method. Subsequently, such an upper bound is minimized by appropriately designing the filter parameters iteratively, where a novel matrix simplification technique is developed to handle the challenges resulting from the sparseness of the sensor network topology and filter structure preserving issues. Event-based H∞ consensus control of multi-agent systems with relative output feedback: The finite-horizon case
In this technical note, the H∞ consensus control problem is investigated over a finite horizon for general discrete time-varying multi-agent systems subject to energy-bounded external disturbances. A decentralized estimation-based output feedback control protocol is put forward via the relative output measurements. A novel event-based mechanism is proposed for each intelligent agent to utilize the available information in order to decide when to broadcast messages and update control input. The aim of the problem addressed is to co-design the time-varying controller and estimator parameters such that the controlled multi-agent systems achieve consensus with a disturbance attenuation level γ over a finite horizon [0,T]. A constrained recursive Riccati difference equation approach is developed to derive the sufficient conditions under which the H∞ consensus performance is guaranteed in the framework of event-based scheme. Furthermore, the desired controller and estimator parameters can be iteratively computed by resorting to the Moore-Penrose pseudo inverse. Finally, the effectiveness of the developed event-based H∞ consensus control strategy is demonstrated in the numerical simulation
