    S-OHEM: Stratified Online Hard Example Mining for Object Detection

    One of the major challenges in object detection is to propose detectors with highly accurate localization of objects. The online sampling of high-loss region proposals (hard examples) uses the multitask loss with equal weight settings across all loss types (e.g, classification and localization, rigid and non-rigid categories) and ignores the influence of different loss distributions throughout the training process, which we find essential to the training efficacy. In this paper, we present the Stratified Online Hard Example Mining (S-OHEM) algorithm for training higher efficiency and accuracy detectors. S-OHEM exploits OHEM with stratified sampling, a widely-adopted sampling technique, to choose the training examples according to this influence during hard example mining, and thus enhance the performance of object detectors. We show through systematic experiments that S-OHEM yields an average precision (AP) improvement of 0.5% on rigid categories of PASCAL VOC 2007 for both the IoU threshold of 0.6 and 0.7. For KITTI 2012, both results of the same metric are 1.6%. Regarding the mean average precision (mAP), a relative increase of 0.3% and 0.5% (1% and 0.5%) is observed for VOC07 (KITTI12) using the same set of IoU threshold. Also, S-OHEM is easy to integrate with existing region-based detectors and is capable of acting with post-recognition level regressors.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, accepted by CCCV 201

    Making vortices in dipolar spinor condensates via rapid adiabatic passage

    We propose to the create vortices in spin-1 condensates via magnetic dipole-dipole interaction. Starting with a polarized condensate prepared under large axial magnetic field, we show that by gradually inverting the field, population transfer among different spin states can be realized in a controlled manner. Under optimal condition, we generate a doubly quantized vortex state containing nearly all atoms in the condensate. The resulting vortex state is a direct manifestation of the dipole-dipole interaction and spin textures in spinor condensates. We also point out that the whole process can be qualitatively described by a simple rapid adiabatic passage model.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Invisible Higgs boson, continuous mass fields and unHiggs mechanism

    We explore the consequences of an electroweak symmetry breaking sector which exhibits approximately scale invariant dynamics -- i.e., nontrivial fixed point behavior, as in unparticle models. One can think of an unHiggs as a composite Higgs boson with a continuous mass distribution. We find it convenient to represent the unHiggs in terms of a Kallen-Lehmann spectral function, from which it is simple to verify the generation of gauge boson and fermion masses, and unitarization of WW scattering. We show that a spectral function with broad support, which corresponds to approximate fixed point behavior over an extended range of energy, can lead to an effectively invisible Higgs particle, whose decays at LEP or LHC could be obscured by background.Comment: 8 page

    Lattice Boltzmann Model for Axisymmetric Multiphase Flows

    In this paper, a lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is presented for axisymmetric multiphase flows. Source terms are added to a two-dimensional standard lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE) for multiphase flows such that the emergent dynamics can be transformed into the axisymmetric cylindrical coordinate system. The source terms are temporally and spatially dependent and represent the axisymmetric contribution of the order parameter of fluid phases and inertial, viscous and surface tension forces. A model which is effectively explicit and second order is obtained. This is achieved by taking into account the discrete lattice effects in the Chapman-Enskog multiscale analysis, so that the macroscopic axisymmetric mass and momentum equations for multiphase flows are recovered self-consistently. The model is extended to incorporate reduced compressibility effects. Axisymmetric equilibrium drop formation and oscillations, breakup and formation of satellite droplets from viscous liquid cylindrical jets through Rayleigh capillary instability and drop collisions are presented.     Use of extended and prepared reference objects in experimental Fourier transform X-ray holography

    The use of one or more gold nanoballs as reference objects for Fourier Transform holography (FTH) is analysed using experimental soft X-ray diffraction from objects consisting of separated clusters of these balls. The holograms are deconvoluted against ball reference objects to invert to images, in combination with a Wiener filter to control noise. A resolution of ~30nm, smaller than one ball, is obtained even if a large cluster of balls is used as the reference, giving the best resolution yet obtained by X-ray FTH. Methods of dealing with missing data due to a beamstop are discussed. Practical prepared objects which satisfy the FTH condition are suggested, and methods of forming them described.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Applied Physics Letter

    Observation of Fermi-energy dependent unitary impurity resonances in a strong topological insulator Bi_2Se_3 with scanning tunneling spectroscopy

    Scanning tunneling spectroscopic studies of Bi_2Se_3 epitaxial films on Si (111) substrates reveal highly localized unitary impurity resonances associated with non-magnetic quantum impurities. The strength of the resonances depends on the energy difference between the Fermi level (E_F) and the Dirac point (E_D) and diverges as E_F approaches E_D. The Dirac-cone surface state of the host recovers within ~ 2Å spatial distance from impurities, suggesting robust topological protection of the surface state of topological insulators against high-density impurities that preserve time reversal symmetry

    In the last decades, we have been observing an increasingly dynamic and turbulent environment, where change seems to be something unavoidable and ubiquitous. This scenario of permanent instability has boosted strategy significance since its object of study is the relationship between organizations and their environment. Besides, the increased complexity agonizes the limitations of human cognition and increases bias in strategic decisions. Under this prism, companies throughout the world search for strategic practices that enable them to handle the environment volatile conditions. Therefore, strategic tools such as SWOT Analysis, Scenario Analysis or Balanced Scorecard have progressively gained importance in organizational life. Some literature also indicates that strategy tools are important to create a sense of organizational direction and to improve strategic thinking. Moreover, companies invest vast amount of resources (for example, time, money, intellectual capital) in acquiring and implementing the tools. There have not been that many studies concerning strategic tools use around the world. For a more meaningful observation of strategic tools use in a wider geographical area we have conducted a strategic tools use survey in Mainland China. The study was spread out to Beijing city, Shaanxi province and Shanxi province and 158 questionnaires were collected. From our survey, we found that SWOT analysis is the most used tool, and followed by PEST Analysis, Brain Storming and Resource Analysis. In addition, our findings in regard to large size companies show that they consider strategic tool increase the rational of the decision making and helped to clarify the strategy of the company

    HeXie management theory and sustainable development

    The sustainable development between human and nature is the scientific development view laid down and emphasized in the Third Plenary Session of the Sixteenth Central Committee of Chinese Party. This paper looks for preliminary ideas on frameworks for analysing sustainbale development. It first discusses the concept of sustainable development and the potential contradictions of three pillars of sustainability on the basis of the evironment protection, economic development and social progress. Based on this conceptualisation of sustainable development, it then goes on to introduce the latest management tool, HeXie Management Theory and “Dual-Principles” mechanism. Through questionnaires and data analysis we demenstrates HeXie management theory is an adequte tool combining the both aspects of strengthening government management and inspiriting enterprise subjective initiative to solve these internal interacting contradictions and to achieve the sustainable development simultaneously

    SPEDEN: Reconstructing single particles from their diffraction patterns

    Speden is a computer program that reconstructs the electron density of single particles from their x-ray diffraction patterns, using a single-particle adaptation of the Holographic Method in crystallography. (Szoke, A., Szoke, H., and Somoza, J.R., 1997. Acta Cryst. A53, 291-313.) The method, like its parent, is unique that it does not rely on ``back'' transformation from the diffraction pattern into real space and on interpolation within measured data. It is designed to deal successfully with sparse, irregular, incomplete and noisy data. It is also designed to use prior information for ensuring sensible results and for reliable convergence. This article describes the theoretical basis for the reconstruction algorithm, its implementation and quantitative results of tests on synthetic and experimentally obtained data. The program could be used for determining the structure of radiation tolerant samples and, eventually, of large biological molecular structures without the need for crystallization.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure
