    Porous Empire: Foreign Visitors And The Post-Stalin Soviet State

    “Porous Empire” is a study of the relationship between Soviet institutions, Soviet society and the millions of foreigners who visited the USSR between the mid-1950s and the mid-1980s. “Porous Empire” traces how Soviet economic, propaganda, and state security institutions, all shaped during the isolationist Stalin period, struggled to accommodate their practices to millions of visitors with material expectations and assumed legal rights radically unlike those of Soviet citizens. While much recent Soviet historiography focuses on the ways in which the post-Stalin opening to the outside world led to the erosion of official Soviet ideology, I argue that ideological attitudes inherited from the Stalin era structured institutional responses to a growing foreign presence in Soviet life. Therefore, while Soviet institutions had to accommodate their economic practices to the growing numbers of tourists and other visitors inside the Soviet borders and were forced to concede the existence of contact zones between foreigners and Soviet citizens that loosened some of the absolute sovereignty claims of the Soviet party-statem, they remained loyal to visions of Soviet economic independence, committed to fighting the cultural Cold War, and profoundly suspicious of the outside world. The gap between Soviet concessions to the era of international mobility and Soviet attitudes to the outside world shaped the peculiar nature of globalization in its Soviet context: even as the Soviet opening up to the world promoted Westernization and undermined some of the ideological foundations of Soviet power, it also generated, within the bowels of Soviet institutions, a profound and honestly-held commitment to authoritarianism and social discipline as an instrument of geopolitical resistance, a mental attitude that still shapes Russian official approaches to the outside world 25 years after the fall of the USSR

    Mutational patterns along different evolution paths of follicular lymphoma

    Follicular lymphoma (FL) is an indolent disease, characterized by a median life expectancy of 18-20 years and by intermittent periods of relapse and remission. FL frequently transforms into the more aggressive diffuse large B cell lymphoma (t-FL). In previous studies, the analysis of immunoglobulin heavy chain variable region (IgHV) genes in sequential biopsies from the same patient revealed two different patterns of tumor clonal evolution: direct evolution, through acquisition of additional IgHV mutations over time, or divergent evolution, in which lymphoma clones from serial biopsies independently develop from a less-mutated common progenitor cell (CPC). Our goal in this study was to characterize the somatic hypermutation (SHM) patterns of IgHV genes in sequential FL samples from the same patients, and address the question of whether the mutation mechanisms (SHM targeting, DNA repair or both), or selection forces acting on the tumor clones, were different in FL samples compared to healthy control samples, or in late relapsed/transformed FL samples compared to earlier ones. Our analysis revealed differences in the distribution of mutations from each of the nucleotides when tumor and non-tumor clones were compared, while FL and transformed FL (t-FL) tumor clones displayed similar mutation distributions. Lineage tree measurements suggested that either initial clone affinity or selection thresholds were lower in FL samples compared to controls, but similar between FL and t-FL samples. Finally, we observed that both FL and t-FL tumor clones tend to accumulate larger numbers of potential N-glycosylation sites due to the introduction of new SHM. Taken together, these results suggest that transformation into t-FL, in contrast to initial FL development, is not associated with any major changes in DNA targeting or repair, or the selection threshold of the tumor clone

    Fractal pattern formation at elastic-plastic transition in heterogeneous materials

    Fractal patterns are observed in computational mechanics of elastic-plastic transitions in two models of linear elastic/perfectly-plastic random heterogeneous materials: (1) a composite made of locally isotropic grains with weak random fluctuations in elastic moduli and/or yield limits; and (2) a polycrystal made of randomly oriented anisotropic grains. In each case, the spatial assignment of material randomness is a non-fractal, strict-white-noise field on a 256 x 256 square lattice of homogeneous, square-shaped grains; the flow rule in each grain follows associated plasticity. These lattices are subjected to simple shear loading increasing through either one of three macroscopically uniform boundary conditions (kinematic, mixed-orthogonal or traction), admitted by the Hill-Mandel condition. Upon following the evolution of a set of grains that become plastic, we find that it has a fractal dimension increasing from 0 towards 2 as the material transitions from elastic to perfectly-plastic. While the grains possess sharp elastic-plastic stress-strain curves, the overall stress-strain responses are smooth and asymptote toward perfectly-plastic flows; these responses and the fractal dimension-strain curves are almost identical for three different loadings. The randomness in elastic moduli alone is sufficient to generate fractal patterns at the transition, but has a weaker effect than the randomness in yield limits.     Fibromuscular dysplasia presenting as a renal infarction: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Fibromuscular dysplasia is a non-atherosclerotic, non-inflammatory disease that most commonly affects the renal and internal carotid arteries.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We present the case of a 44-year-old Caucasian man who was admitted with complaints of loin pain and hypertension. A computed tomography scan of the abdomen revealed a right renal infarction with a nodular aspect of the right renal artery. Subsequent renal angiography revealed a typical 'string of beads' pattern of the right renal artery with thrombus formation. Oral anticoagulation was started and the secondary hypertension was easily controlled with anti-hypertensive drugs. At follow-up, our patient refused percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty as a definitive treatment.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Fibromuscular dysplasia is the most common cause of renovascular hypertension in patients under 50 years of age. Presentation with renal infarction is rare.</p> <p>In fibromuscular dysplasia, angioplasty has been proven to have, at least for some indications, an advantage over anti-hypertensive drugs. Therefore, hypertension secondary to fibromuscular dysplasia is the most common cause of curable hypertension.</p

    Computational Homogenization of Architectured Materials

    Architectured materials involve geometrically engineered distributions of microstructural phases at a scale comparable to the scale of the component, thus calling for new models in order to determine the effective properties of materials. The present chapter aims at providing such models, in the case of mechanical properties. As a matter of fact, one engineering challenge is to predict the effective properties of such materials; computational homogenization using finite element analysis is a powerful tool to do so. Homogenized behavior of architectured materials can thus be used in large structural computations, hence enabling the dissemination of architectured materials in the industry. Furthermore, computational homogenization is the basis for computational topology optimization which will give rise to the next generation of architectured materials. This chapter covers the computational homogenization of periodic architectured materials in elasticity and plasticity, as well as the homogenization and representativity of random architectured materials
