    Prawn Shell Chitosan Has Anti-Obesogenic Properties, Influencing Both Nutrient Digestibility and Microbial Populations in a Pig Model

The current experiment investigated the anti-obesity potential of prawn shell derived chitosan on a range of variables relevant to obesity in a pig model. The two dietary treatment groups included in this 63 day study were: T1) basal diet and T2) basal diet plus 1000 ppm chitosan (n = 20 gilts per group (70 ± 0.90 kg). The parameter categories which were assessed included: performance, nutrient digestibility, serum leptin concentrations, nutrient transporter and digestive enzyme gene expression and gut microbial populations. Pigs offered chitosan had reduced feed intake and final body weight (P< 0.001), lower ileal digestibility of dry matter (DM), gross energy (GE) (P< 0.05) and reduced coefficient of apparent total tract digestibility (CATTD) of gross energy and nitrogen (P<0.05) when compared to the basal group. Fatty acid binding protein 2 (FABP2) gene expression was down-regulated in pigs offered chitosan (P = 0.05) relative to the basal diet. Serum leptin concentrations increased (P< 0.05) in animals offered the chitosan diet compared to pigs offered the basal diet. Fatness traits, back-fat depth (mm), fat content (kg), were significantly reduced while lean meat (%) was increased (P<0.05) in chitosan supplemented pigs. Pigs offered chitosan had decreased numbers of Firmicutes in the colon (P <0.05), and Lactobacillus spp. in both the caecum (P <0.05) and colon (P <0.001). Bifidobacteria populations were increased in the caecum of animals offered the chitosan diet (P <0.05).     What Explains the Incidence of the Use of a Common Sediment Control on Lots with Houses Under Construction?

    To analyze compliance with one aspect of the regulation of stormwater discharge, we estimate a random-utility model of the probability that a builder uses a silt fence to control sediments on a lot with a house under construction in an urbanizing county of South Carolina. The probability increases if the builder is responsible to the subdivision’s developer or if a homeowners association exists. The probability also increases as the cost to install a silt fence decreases or the number of houses under construction per built house in a subdivision increases.     Mechanism for nitrogen isotope fractionation during ammonium assimilation by Escherichia coli K12

This selectivity leaves an isotopic signature in their biomass that depends on the external concentration of ammonium. To dissect how differences in discrimination arise molecularly, we examined a wild-type (WT) strain of Escherichia coli K12 and mutant strains with lesions affecting ammonium-assimilatory proteins. We used isotope ratio mass spectrometry (MS) to assess the nitrogen isotopic composition of cell material when the strains were grown in batch culture at either high or low external concentrations of NH3 (achieved by controlling total NH4Cl and pH of the medium). At high NH3 (≥0.89 µM), discrimination against the heavy isotope by the WT strain (−19.2‰) can be accounted for by the equilibrium isotope effect for dissociation of NH4+ to NH3 + H+. NH3 equilibrates across the cytoplasmic membrane, and glutamine synthetase does not manifest an isotope effect in vivo. At low NH3 (≤0.18 µM), discrimination reflects an isotope effect for the NH4+ channel AmtB (−14.1‰). By making E. coli dependent on the low-affinity ammonium-assimilatory pathway, we determined that biosynthetic glutamate dehydrogenase has an inverse isotope effect in vivo (+8.8‰). Likewise, by making unmediated diffusion of NH3 across the cytoplasmic membrane rate-limiting for cell growth in a mutant strain lacking AmtB, we could deduce an in vivo isotope effect for transport of NH3 across the membrane (−10.9‰).     Beyond Flux-Limited Diffusion: Parallel Algorithms for Multidimensional Radiation Hydrodynamics

    This paper presents a new code for performing multidimensional radiation hydrodynamic (RHD) simulations on parallel computers involving anisotropic radiation fields and nonequilibrium effects. The radiation evolution modules described here encapsulate the physics provided by the serial algorithm of Stone et. al (ApJSupp, vol 80, pp. 819-845), but add new functionality with regard to physics and numerics. Physics enhancments include the addition of time dependence to the computation of the variable tensor Eddington factor (VTEF) closure term, and a matter-radiation coupling scheme which is particularly robust for nonequilibrium problems. Numerical highlights include a discussion of how our code is implemented for parallel execution and a description of our scalable linear solver module. We present a suite of numerical tests from which the virtues and vices of our method may be gleaned; these include nonequilibrium Marshak waves, 2-D "shadow" tests showing the one-sided illumination of an opaque cloud, and full RHD+VTEF simulations of radiating shocks. We conclude that radiation moment solutions closed with variable tensor Eddington factors show a dramatic qualitative improvement over results obtained with flux-limited diffusion, and further that this approach has a bright future in the context of parallel RHD simulations in astrophysics.Comment: 57 pages (including 18 eps figures); submitted to the ApJ Supplement; prepared with AASTEX 5.
