Prototyping Hexagonal Light Concentrators Using High-Reflectance Specular Films for the Large-Sized Telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array

We have developed a prototype hexagonal light concentrator for the Large-Sized Telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array. To maximize the photodetection efficiency of the focal-plane camera pixels for atmospheric Cherenkov photons and to lower the energy threshold, a specular film with a very high reflectance of 92-99% has been developed to cover the inner surfaces of the light concentrators. The prototype has a relative anode sensitivity (which can be roughly regarded as collection efficiency) of about 95 to 105% at the most important angles of incidence. The design, simulation, production procedure, and performance measurements of the light-concentrator prototype are reported.Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in JINS

The purpose of this study was to examine the accrual state and difficulties and issues of classes on disabilities, and examine the elements related to the difficulties and issues. We conducted a questionnaire survey toward teachers working in public elementary schools. As a result of Categorical Principal Components Analysis( CATPCA), three components were extracted as difficulties and issues:[ 1. Difficulties and issues in processes of carrying out the classes][ 2. Difficulties and issues in prerequisite knowledge][ 3. Difficulties and issues on human environment and time]. As a result of further analysis, nonparametric tests, these possibilities were revealed:[ 1. Difficulties and issues in processes of carrying out the classes] may be reduced by participating in workshops about teaching methods of the classes. [2. Difficulties and issues in prerequisite knowledge] may increase by practicing classes with reading materials, but, decrease because of “plans over six grades” with regard to the classes.[ 3. Difficulties and issues on human environment and time] may not be difficult to teachers who conduct the classes participating people with disabilities, while they may be significant to teachers who conduct the classes about LD/ADHD. For these results, in order to reduce these difficulties and issues, we should put the following into practice:( 1) Enhancing workshops focusing on the teaching methods of the classes,( 2) Working on the classes schoolwide planning and conducting, taking into account the description in the textbooks,( 3) Increasing opportunities of learning and workshops of the teacher training course or in-service stage, and accumulating practical examples or reports of the classes relating to disabilities

Background: Homeobox B9 (HOXB9), a transcriptional factor, regulates developmental processes and tumor progression and has recently been recognized as one of important transcriptional factors related to angiogenesis. This study aimed to investigate the role of HOXB9 in tumorigenesis and angiogenesis. Methods: We examined the expression of HOXB9 in colorectal cancer using qPCR and in situ hybridization. We also examined the effect of HOXB9 overexpression in colorectal cancer using a proliferation assay, ELISA, a multiplex assay, and xenograft models. The clinical significance of HOXB9 was statistically evaluated in resected specimens. Results: HOXB9 was expressed in colorectal cancer specimens. HOXB9 induced angiogenesis and tumor proliferation in vitro, which resulted in high tumorigenicity in vivo and poor overall survival. Bevacizumab, an anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antibody, remarkably suppressed tumor proliferation by inhibiting angiogenesis in HOXB9-overexpressing xenografts, and it improved overall survival and provided prolonged progression-free survival in HOXB9-overexpressing patients. A comprehensive multiplex assay of the supernatant of cancer cells co-cultured with human vascular endothelial cells and fibroblasts indicated significantly higher interleukin-6 (IL6) levels than those in the supernatant of monocultured cells. HOXB9 overexpression in clinical specimens was significantly correlated with increased IL6 expression. An IL6-neutralizing antibody inhibited VEGF secretion and tumor proliferation in the co-culture system. Conclusions: HOXB9 promotes the secretion of angiogenic factors, including VEGF, to induce tumor proliferation through microenvironmental production of cytokines including IL6 signaling. Moreover, silencing of VEGF or IL6 terminates cytokine release in tumor microenvironment. Thus, HOXB9 and IL6 may be potential biomarkers for bevacizumab treatment

Magnetic properties of surficial sediments in Lake Ogawara on the Pacific coast of northeastern Japan: spatial variability and correlation with brackish water stratification

To examine limnological conditions in Lake Ogawara on the Pacific coast of northwestern Japan, we investigated the magnetic properties of dredged bottom sediment originally collected from the lake in the summer of 2011. We used non-destructive methods to measure the low-field magnetic susceptibility shortl after sampling, and anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) was assessed in 2012 and 2015. The ARM acquisition and demagnetization curves from littoral sites showed several patterns that reflect the provenance of the sediments. At water depths below 10 m, the magnetic susceptibility and ARM of greenish black mud with high organic content decreased considerably with the increase in water depth, but ARM increased slightly at water depths greater than 16 m. We also found that the magnetic concentrations of mud samples were reduced markedly during a period of storage for about 3 years. We attributed these reductions to diagenetic loss of magnetic minerals, which had been enhanced at deeper sites. It is possible that the ARM carriers in deeper areas were derived from authigenic formation of iron sulfide or from deposition of suspended matter in the hypolimnion water. We propose that the magnetic properties of surficial sediments are controlled by limnological stratification of the brackish lake water, thus possibly providing an analog for down-core variations of magnetic parameters associated with the modification of magnetic minerals during reductive diagenesis

Adenocarcinoma of the Uterine Cervix Detected Over Long-Term Mass Screening in Japan

We retrospectively reviewed the history, records of detailed examination and/or treatment, and cytologic/histologic specimens of 32 adenocarcinoma cases (0.006%) detected among 482,451 examinees in a mass screening for cervical cancer conducted over a 20-year period (1975-1994). The detection rate of adenocarcinoma had increased gradually until 1989 with the increase of total examinees but became markedly lower in the last five-year period (p = 0.0227), probably because of the significant decrease in the number of initial examinees (p<0.0001). The frequency of early-stage adenocarcinoma (stage 0 or Ia) was 37.5% (12/ 32), markedly higher than the 8.4% (7/83) of the adenocarcinoma cases treated at our institution during the same period (p = 0.0004). Glandular epithelial neoplasms were suggested by cervical smears at detection in only 5/12 (41.7%) of the early-stage adenocarcinoma cases and in 17/ 20 (85.0%) of the frankly invasive adenocarcinoma cases (p= 0.0184). Atypical glandular epithelial cells could not be found in the smears at detection from the remaining 10 cases. Atypical cells from coexisting squamous cell neoplasms were found. The rate of the histologic coexistence of squamous cell neoplasms was 9/12 (75.0%) in the earlystage group and 6/20 (30.0%) in the frankly invasive group (p = 0.0269). This rate tended to decrease with the progress of the stage. Mass screening can detect early-stage adenocarcinoma in cervical smears, but half or more of the cases are discovered in smears with atypical cells from coexisting squamous cell neoplasms and incidentally found later in histologic specimens. To improve the accuracy of detecting cervical adenocarcinomas, we should investigate the cytologic features of atypical glandular epithelial cells obtained from early-stage adenocarcinomas. The its epidemiologic profile of this cancer should be furthur delineated for efficient mass screening programs

Asian monsoon modulation of nonsteady state diagenesis in hemipelagic marine sediments offshore of Japan

We have identified millennial-scale variations in magnetic mineral diagenesis from Pacific Ocean sediments offshore of Japan that we correlate with changes in organic carbon burial that were likely driven by Asian monsoon fluctuations. The correlation was determined by identifying offsets between the positions of fossil diagenetic fronts and climatically induced variations in organic carbon burial inferred from magnetic and geochemical analyses. Episodes of intense monsoon activity and attendant sediment magnetic mineral diagenesis also appear to correlate with Heinrich events, which supports the existence of climatic telecommunications between Asia and the North Atlantic region. Several lines of evidence support our conclusions: (1) fluctuations in down-core magnetic properties and diagenetic pyrite precipitation are approximately coeval; (2) localized stratigraphic intervals with relatively stronger magnetic mineral dissolution are linked to enhanced sedimentary organic carbon contents that gave rise to nonsteady state diagenesis; (3) down-core variations in elemental S content provide a proxy for nonsteady state diagenesis that correlate with key records of Asian monsoon variations; and (4) relict titanomagnetite that is preserved as inclusions within silicate particles, rather than secondary authigenic phases (e.g., greigite), dominates the strongly diagenetically altered sediment intervals and are protected against sulfidic dissolution. We suggest that such millennial-scale environmental modulation of nonsteady state diagenesis (that creates a temporal diagenetic filter and relict magnetic mineral signatures) is likely to be common in organic-rich hemipelagic sedimentary settings with rapidly varying depositional conditions. Our work also demonstrates the usefulness of magnetic mineral inclusions for recording important environmental magnetic signal
