Improvement of Cheilitis granulomatosa after Dental Treatment

    Get PDF
A 38-year-old male suffered from swelling of the lower lip for 3 months. Neither facial nerve palsy nor fissuring of the tongue was present. Histological examination of a biopsy taken from the lower lip revealed non-caseous epithelioid cell granulomas, suggestive of cheilitis granulomatosa. Patch testing revealed positive reactions to mercury chloride and amalgam. His symptoms markedly improved 3 months after treatment of the apical periodontitis and replacement of dental crowns. As his dental crowns did not contain mercury, we believe that the cheilitis granulomatosa may have been related to the focal dental infection

Houses in the Waqf System - A Case of 16th-Century Istanbul

This paper deals with the urban houses in Istanbul endowed as the waqf properties in 16th century and attempts to clarify the characteristics of small waqf endowments of urban dwellers. In order to be endowed to waqf\u27s, houses are required to be complete private properties.Such condition seems to have been realized in the course of the reorganisation of Constantinople into Ottoman Istanbul, because, according to some documents preserved in Ottomen archives, more than 90% of all houses in Istanbul were complete freeholds, i. e. both the houses and the lands were owned by the urban dwellers at the last years of Sultan Mehmed the Second. The characteristics of the waqf\u27s, especially house waqf\u27s, in Istanbul revealed through the analysis of the waqf tahrir register dated 1546 are as follow: (1) Of all waqf\u27s 75% are small waqf\u27s, the income of which is less than 1000 akce;(2) 92% of the properties of the small waqf\u27s are either houses or cash;(3) In the small waqf\u27s the property of which is private houses, the most important aim of endowments is to guarantee the benefits of the endower\u27s descendants from waqf property. There are two ways to realize it; one is to assure them to live in the endowed houses, and the other is to assign them as the mutevelli (administrator) of the waqf\u27s;(4) However important it is to guarantee benefits of the descendants, many charitable activities are still found, most of which give some benefits to mescid\u27s (small mosques) in mahalle\u27s (quarters). This could be regarded as a reflex of the formation of mahalle\u27s in the mid 16th-century Istanbul

A Validation Study of the Japanese Version of the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-Revised

The aim of this study was to validate the Japanese version of the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-Revised (ACE-R) [Mori: Japanese Edition of Hodges JR's Cognitive Assessment for Clinicians, 2010] designed to detect dementia, and to compare its diagnostic accuracy with that of the Mini-Mental State Examination. The ACE-R was administered to 85 healthy individuals and 126 patients with dementia. The reliability assessment revealed a strong correlation in both groups. The internal consistency was excellent (α-coefficient = 0.88). Correlation with the Clinical Dementia Rating sum of boxes score was significant (rs = −0.61, p < 0.001). The area under the curve was 0.98 for the ACE-R and 0.96 for the Mini-Mental State Examination. The cut-off score of 80 showed a sensitivity of 94% and a specificity of 94%. Like the original ACE-R and the versions designed for other languages, the Japanese version of the ACE-R is a reliable and valid test for the detection of dementia
