Large-scale surface reconstruction energetics of Pt(100) and Au(100) by all-electron DFT
The low-index surfaces of Au and Pt all tend to reconstruct, a fact that is
of key importance in many nanostructure, catalytic, and electrochemical
applications. Remarkably, some significant questions regarding their structural
energies remain even today, in particular for the large-scale quasihexagonal
reconstructed (100) surfaces: Rather dissimilar reconstruction energies for Au
and Pt in available experiments, and experiment and theory do not match for Pt.
We here show by all-electron density-functional theory that only large enough
"(5 x N)" approximant supercells capture the qualitative reconstruction energy
trend between Au(100) and Pt(100), in contrast to what is often done in the
theoretical literature. Their magnitudes are then in fact similar, and closer
to the measured value for Pt(100); our calculations achieve excellent agreement
with known geometric characteristics and provide direct evidence for the

Spin dependent electron transport through a magnetic resonant tunneling diode
Electron transport properties in nanostructures can be modeled, for example,
by using the semiclassical Wigner formalism or the quantum mechanical Green's
functions formalism. We compare the performance and the results of these
methods in the case of magnetic resonant-tunneling diodes. We have implemented
the two methods within the self-consistent spin-density-functional theory. Our
numerical implementation of the Wigner formalism is based on the
finite-difference scheme whereas for the Green's function formalism the
finite-element method is used. As a specific application, we consider the
device studied by Slobodskyy et all. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 246601 (2003)] and
analyze their experimental results. The Wigner and Green's functions formalisms
give similar electron densities and potentials but, surprisingly, the former
method requires much more computer resources in order to obtain numerically
accurate results for currents. Both of the formalisms can successfully be used
to model magnetic resonant tunneling diode structures.Comment: 13 pages and 12 figure
Effects of chemical functionalization on electronic transport in carbon nanobuds
Carbon nanobuds form a class of hybrid structures consisting of carbon nanotubes onto which fullerene types of units are covalently grown. Due to higher electrophilicity and curvature of the fullerene moiety a carbon nanobud exhibits higher reactivity compared to a plain nanotube. In this paper we study how the electronic structure and transport properties of carbon nanobuds are affected by chemical modification. The studied model systems comprise carbon nanobuds that are chemically modified by attaching Li and F atoms as well as tetrathiafulvalene molecules. We use the density functional theory combined with Landauer-BĂŒttiker electron transport formalism. According to the simulations, the attached units change the relative positions of the Fermi levels, creating a distinctive effect on the electronic transport properties along associated carbon nanotubes. In semiconducting nanotubes the change in the conductance is systematic and should be detectable in experiments. Hence, the carbon nanobuds are potential candidates for sensor applications.Peer reviewe
Cure of Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with reflux oesophagitis treated with long term omeprazole reverses gastritis without exacerbation of reflux disease: results of a randomised controlled trial
BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori gastritis may progress to glandular
atrophy and intestinal metaplasia, conditions that predispose to gastric
cancer. Profound suppression of gastric acid is associated with increased
severity of H pylori gastritis. This prospective randomised study aimed to
investigate whether H pylori eradication can influence gastritis and its
sequelae during long term omeprazole therapy for gastro-oesophageal reflux
disease (GORD). METHODS: A total of 231 H pylori positive GORD patients
who had been treated for > or =12 months with omeprazole maintenance
therapy (OM) were randomised to either continuation of OM (OM only; n =
120) or OM plus a one week course of omeprazole, amoxycillin, and
clarithromycin (OM triple; n = 111). Endoscopy with standardised biopsy
sampling as well as symptom evaluation were performed at baseline and
after one and two years. Gastritis was assessed according to the Sydney
classification system for activity, inflammation, atrophy, intestinal
metaplasia, and H pylori density. RESULTS: Corpus gastritis activity at
entry was moderate or severe in 50% and 55% of the OM only and OM triple
groups, respectively. In the OM triple group, H pylori was eradicated in
90 (88%) patients, and activity and inflammation decreased substantially
in both the antrum and corpus (p<0.001, baseline v two years). Atrophic
gastritis also improved in the corpus (p<0.001) but not in the antrum. In
the 83 OM only patients with continuing infection, there was no change in
antral and corpus gastritis activity or atrophy, but inflammation
increased (p<0.01). H pylori eradication did not alter the dose of
omeprazole required, or reflux symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Most H pylori
positive GORD patients have a corpus predominant pangastritis during
omeprazole maintenance therapy. Eradication of H pylori eliminates gastric
mucosal inflammation and induces regression of corpus glandular atrophy. H
pylori eradication did not worsen reflux disease or lead to a need for
increased omeprazole maintenance dose. We therefore recommend eradication
of H pylori in GORD patients receiving long term acid suppression

Proton pump inhibitors and risk of gastric cancer: a population-based cohort study
Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use leads to hypergastrinaemia, which has been associated with gastrointestinal neoplasia. We evaluated the association between PPI use and risk of gastric cancer using population-based health-care registers in North Jutland, Denmark, during 1990â2003. We compared incidence rates among new users of PPI (n=18â790) or histamine-2-antagonists (H2RAs) (n=17â478) and non-users of either drug. Poisson regression analysis was used to estimate incidence rate ratios (IRRs) adjusted for multiple confounders. We incorporated a 1-year lag time to address potential reverse causation. We identified 109 gastric cancer cases among PPI users and 52 cases among H2RA users. After incorporating the 1-year lag time, we observed IRRs for gastric cancer of 1.2 (95% CI: 0.8â2.0) among PPI users and 1.2 (95% CI: 0.8â1.8) among H2RA users compared with non-users. These estimates are in contrast to significant overall IRRs of 9.0 and 2.8, respectively, without the lag time. In lag time analyses, increased IRRs were observed among PPI users with the largest number of prescriptions or the longest follow-up compared with H2RA users or non-users. Although our results point to a major influence of reverse causation and confounding by indication on the association between PPI use and gastric cancer incidence, the finding of increased incidence among PPI users with most prescriptions and longest follow-up warrants further investigation
Classification of tumours
Tumours are classified according to the most differentiated cells with the exception of carcinomas where a few tumour cells show neuroendocrine differentiation. In this case these cells are regarded as redifferentiated tumour cells, and the tumour is not classified as neuroendocrine. However, it is now clear that normal neuroendocrine cells can divide, and that continuous stimulation of such cells results in tumour formation, which during time becomes increasingly malignant. To understand tumourigenesis, it is of utmost importance to recognize the cell of origin of the tumour since knowledge of the growth regulation of that cell may give information about development and thus possible prevention and prophylaxis of the tumour. It may also have implications for the treatment. The successful treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumours by a tyrosine kinase inhibitor is an example of the importance of a correct cellular classification of a tumour. In the future tumours should not just be classified as for instance adenocarcinomas of an organ, but more precisely as a carcinoma originating from a certain cell type of that organ

Semiconductor Spintronics
Spintronics refers commonly to phenomena in which the spin of electrons in a
solid state environment plays the determining role. In a more narrow sense
spintronics is an emerging research field of electronics: spintronics devices
are based on a spin control of electronics, or on an electrical and optical
control of spin or magnetism. This review presents selected themes of
semiconductor spintronics, introducing important concepts in spin transport,
spin injection, Silsbee-Johnson spin-charge coupling, and spindependent
tunneling, as well as spin relaxation and spin dynamics. The most fundamental
spin-dependent nteraction in nonmagnetic semiconductors is spin-orbit coupling.
Depending on the crystal symmetries of the material, as well as on the
structural properties of semiconductor based heterostructures, the spin-orbit
coupling takes on different functional forms, giving a nice playground of
effective spin-orbit Hamiltonians. The effective Hamiltonians for the most
relevant classes of materials and heterostructures are derived here from
realistic electronic band structure descriptions. Most semiconductor device
systems are still theoretical concepts, waiting for experimental
demonstrations. A review of selected proposed, and a few demonstrated devices
is presented, with detailed description of two important classes: magnetic
resonant tunnel structures and bipolar magnetic diodes and transistors. In most
cases the presentation is of tutorial style, introducing the essential
theoretical formalism at an accessible level, with case-study-like
illustrations of actual experimental results, as well as with brief reviews of
