    Banking and commerce: a liquidity approach

    This paper looks at the advantages and disadvantages of mixing banking and commerce, using the "liquidity" approach to financial intermediation. Adding a commercial firm makes it easier for a bank to dispose of assets seized in a loan default. This "internal market" increases the liquidity of such assets and improves the bank's ability to perform financial intermediation. More generally, owning a commercial firm may act either as a substitute or a complement to commercial lending. In some cases, a bank will voluntarily refrain from making loans, choosing to become a nonbank bank in an unregulated environment.Nonbank financial institutions ; Bank liquidity

    Parallel Quantum-Point-Contacts as High-Frequency-Mixers

    We present the results of high-frequency mixing experiments performed upon parallel quantum point-contacts defined in the two-dimensional electron gas of an Al_{x}Ga_{1-x}As/GaAs-heterostructure. The parallel geometry, fabricated using a novel double-resist technology, enables the point-contact device to be impedance matched over a wide frequency range and, in addition, increases the power levels of the mixing signal while simultaneously reducing the parasitic source-drain capacitance. Here, we consider two parallel quantum point-contact devices with 155 and 110 point-contacts respectively; both devices operated successfully at liquid helium and liquid nitrogen temperatures with a minimal conversion loss of 13 dB.Comment: 4 figures, RevTeX, to be published in the 16 June 1997 issue of Applied Physic Letter

    Molecular mechanism of influenza A NS1-mediated TRIM25 recognition and inhibition

    RIG-I is a viral RNA sensor that induces the production of type I interferon (IFN) in response to infection with a variety of viruses. Modification of RIG-I with K63-linked poly-ubiquitin chains, synthesised by TRIM25, is crucial for activation of the RIG-I/MAVS signalling pathway. TRIM25 activity is targeted by influenza A virus non-structural protein 1 (NS1) to suppress IFN production and prevent an efficient host immune response. Here we present structures of the human TRIM25 coiled-coil-PRYSPRY module and of complexes between the TRIM25 coiled-coil domain and NS1. These structures show that binding of NS1 interferes with the correct positioning of the PRYSPRY domain of TRIM25 required for substrate ubiquitination and provide a mechanistic explanation for how NS1 suppresses RIG-I ubiquitination and hence downstream signalling. In contrast, the formation of unanchored K63-linked poly-ubiquitin chains is unchanged by NS1 binding, indicating that RING dimerisation of TRIM25 is not affected by NS1

We give a characterization of a subclass of aggregated processes which can be obtained from simpler, "elementary", cases. In particular cases of the mixture densities, the structure (moving average representation) of the aggregated process is investigated

    Assessment of non-invasive ICP during CSF infusion test: an approach with transcranial Doppler.

    BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare four non-invasive intracranial pressure (nICP) methods in a prospective cohort of hydrocephalus patients whose cerebrospinal fluid dynamics was investigated using infusion tests involving controllable test-rise of ICP. METHOD: Cerebral blood flow velocity (FV), ICP and non-invasive arterial blood pressure (ABP) were recorded in 53 patients diagnosed for hydrocephalus. Non-invasive ICP methods were based on: (1) interaction between FV and ABP using black-box model (nICP_BB); (2) diastolic FV (nICP_FVd); (3) critical closing pressure (nICP_CrCP); (4) transcranial Doppler-derived pulsatility index (nICP_PI). Correlation between rise in ICP (∆ICP) and ∆nICP and averaged correlations for changes in time between ICP and nICP during infusion test were investigated. RESULTS: From baseline to plateau, all nICP estimators increased significantly. Correlations between ∆ICP and ∆nICP were better represented by nICP_PI and nICP_BB: 0.45 and 0.30 (p < 0.05). nICP_FVd and nICP_CrCP presented non-significant correlations: -0.17 (p = 0.21), 0.21 (p = 0.13). For changes in ICP during individual infusion test nICP_PI, nICP_BB and nICP_FVd presented similar correlations with ICP: 0.39 ± 0.40, 0.39 ± 0.43 and 0.35 ± 0.41 respectively. However, nICP_CrCP presented a weaker correlation (R = 0.29 ± 0.24). CONCLUSIONS: Out of the four methods, nICP_PI was the one with best performance for predicting changes in ∆ICP during infusion test, followed by nICP_BB. Unreliable correlations were shown by nICP_FVd and nICP_CrCP.     Abstract--In this paper, the ability of doubly fed induction generators to provide voltage stability support in weak transmission networks is investigated. Specifically, the response of wind turbines to voltage dips at the point of common coupling and its effects on system stability are analyzed. A control strategy for the operation of the grid and rotor side converters is developed in order to support the grid voltage by injecting reactive power during and after grid fault events. The performance of the strategy is analyzed for different voltage dips at the point of common coupling of a wind farm and compared with the case when the converters do not provide any voltage support. Simulations are performed using a simplified model of the Chilean transmission network. This system is considered to be a good example of weak power system, because of its radial configuration

    CEO pay, shareholder returns, and accounting profits

    We assess the impact on CEO pay (including salary, cash bonus, and benefits in kind) of changes in both accounting and shareholder returns in 99 British companies in the years 1972-89. After correcting for heterogeneity biases inherent in the standard specifications of the problem, we find a strong positive relationship between CEO pay and within-company changes in shareholder returns, and no statistically significant relationship between CEO pay and within-company changes in accounting returns. Differences between firms in long-term average profitability do appear to have a substantial effect on CEO pay, while differences between firms in shareholder returns add nothing to the within-firm pay dynamics.These findings call into question the rationale for explicitly share-based incentive schemes
