    The Effects on Stature of Poverty, Family Size and Birth Order: British Children in the 1930s

    This paper examines effects of socio-economic conditions on the standardised heights and body mass index of children in Interwar Britain. It uses the Boyd Orr cohort, a survey of predominantly poor families taken in 1937-9, which provides a unique opportunity to explore the determinants of child health in the era before the welfare state. We examine the trade-off between the quality (in the form of health outcomes) and the number of children in the family at a time when genuine poverty still existed in Britain. Our results provide strong support both for negative birth order effects and negative family size effects on the heights of children. No such effects are found for the body mass index (BMI). We find that household income per capita positively influences the heights of children but, even after accounting for this, the number of children in the family still has a negative effect on height. This latter effect is closely associated with overcrowding and particularly with the degree of cleanliness or hygiene in the household, which conditions exposure to factors predisposing to disease. We also analyse evidence collected retrospectively, which indicates that the effects of childhood conditions on height persisted into adulthood.child health, heights, poverty

    Fertility Decline and the Heights of Children in Britain, 1886-1938

    In this paper we argue that the fertility decline that began around 1880 had substantial positive effects on the health of children, as the quality-quantity trade-off would suggest. We use microdata from a unique survey from 1930s Britain to analyze the relationship between the standardized heights of children and the number of children in the family. Our results suggest that heights are influenced positively by family income per capita and negatively by the number of children or the degree of crowding in the household. The evidence suggests that family size affected the health of children through its influence on both nutrition and disease. Applying our results to long-term trends, we find that rising household income and falling family size contributed significantly to improving child health between 1886 and 1938. Between 1906 and 1938 these variables account for nearly half of the increase in heights, and much of this effect is due to falling family size.     Characterization of high-fracture toughness K-fluorrichterite-fluorapatite glass ceramics

    Stoichiometric K-fluorrichterite (Glass A) and the same composition with 2 mol% P2O5 added (Glass B) were prepared and then heat-treated isothermally from 550°1000°C with 50°C intervals. Samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The biaxial flexural strength and indentation fracture toughness of heat-treated glass specimens were also determined for both materials. XRD traces and TEM images showed similar phase evolution and fine microstructures for both systems at ≤950°C, with mica and diopside reacting with residual glass to form K-fluorrichterite as the temperature was increased from 650°C. However, in Glass B, fluorapatite was also present at >800°C. In contrast, coarser microstructures were observed at 1000°C, with larger K-fluorrichterite (20 μm) and enstatite (10 μm) crystals in Glasses A and B, respectively. The highest fracture toughness (2.69 ± 0.01 MPa·m(1/2)) and biaxial strength (242.6 ± 3.6 MPa) were recorded for Glass B heat-treated at 1000°C. This was attributed to the presence of enstatite coupled with an interlocked lath-like crystalline microstructure

    Widely applicable coinage metal window electrodes on flexible polyester substrates applied to organic photovoltaics

    The fabrication, exceptional properties, and application of 8 nm thick Cu, Ag, Au, and Cu/Ag bilayer electrodes on flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) substrates is reported. These electrodes are fabricated using a solvent free process in which the plastic surface is chemically modified with a molecular monolayer of thiol and amine terminated alkylsilanes prior to metal deposition. The resulting electrodes have a sheet resistance of ≤14 Ω sq–1, are exceptionally robust and can be rapidly thermally annealed at 200 °C to reduce their sheet resistance to ≤9 Ω sq–1. Notably, annealing Au electrodes briefly at 200 °C causes the surface to revert almost entirely to the {111} face, rendering it ideal as a model electrode for fundamental science and practical application alike. The power conversion efficiency of 1 cm2 organic photovoltaics (OPVs) employing 8 nm Ag and Au films as the hole-extracting window electrode exhibit performance comparable to those on indium–tin oxide, with the advantage that they are resistant to repeated bending through a small radius of curvature and are chemically well-defined. OPVs employing Cu and bilayer Cu:Ag electrodes exhibit inferior performance due to a lower open-circuit voltage and fill factor. Measurements of the interfacial energetics made using the Kelvin probe technique provide insight into the physical reason for this difference. The results show how coinage metal electrodes offer a viable alternative to ITO on flexible substrates for OPVs and highlight the challenges associated with the use of Cu as an electrode material in this contex

    An electrode design rule for high performance top-illuminated organic photovoltaics

    An electrode design rule for high performance top-illuminated bulk-heterojunction organic photovoltaics is proposed, that enables the device architecture to be simplified by removing the need for the electron selective layer at the interface with the low work function reflective electrode. This new guideline for electrode design is underpinned by device studies in conjunction with a study of the energetics at the interface between five widely used solution processed organic semiconductors of both electron donor and acceptor type, and a stable low work function reflective substrate electrode. The magnitude and distribution of space charge resulting from ground-state electron transfer from the electrode into each organic semiconductor upon contact formation is derived from direct measurements of the interfacial energetics using the Kelvin probe technique, which enables the variation in potential across the entire film thickness used in the devices to be probed
