    Millimeter-Thick Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Forests: Hidden Role of Catalyst Support

    A parametric study of so-called "super growth" of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNTs) was done by using combinatorial libraries of iron/aluminum oxide catalysts. Millimeter-thick forests of nanotubes grew within 10 min, and those grown by using catalysts with a thin Fe layer (about 0.5 nm) were SWNTs. Although nanotube forests grew under a wide range of reaction conditions such as gas composition and temperature, the window for SWNT was narrow. Fe catalysts rapidly grew nanotubes only when supported on aluminum oxide.     Synthesis of tertiary alkylphosphonate oligonucleotides through light-driven radical-polar crossover reactions

However, at present, the alkyl moieties that can be attached to phosphorus atoms in these compounds are limited to methyl groups or primary/secondary alkyls, and such alkylphosphonate moieties can degrade during oligonucleotide synthesis. The present work demonstrates the tertiary alkylation of the phosphorus atoms of phosphites bearing two 2’-deoxynuclosides. This process utilizes a carbocation generated via a light-driven radical-polar crossover mechanism. This protocol provides tertiary alkylphosphonate structures that are difficult to synthesize using existing methods. The conversion of these species to oligonucleotides having charge-neutral alkylphosphonate linkages through a phosphoramidite-based approach was also confirmed in this study

    High concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids are associated with the development of atrial fibrillation in the Japanese population

    The favorable effect of fish oils rich in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on the development of atrial fibrillation (AF) is controversial. The relationship between the serum concentrations of n-3 PUFAs and the incidence of AF is unclear; therefore, in the present study, we aimed to elucidate this relationship. We evaluated the serum concentrations of n-3 PUFAs in 110 patients with AF, 46 patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD) and no AF, and 36 healthy volunteers. Thirty-six patients had a history of IHD (IHD-AF group) and 74 did not (L-AF group). The eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) levels in the L-AF group were higher than those in the IHD-AF and control groups (117 +/- A 64, 76 +/- A 30, and 68 +/- A 23 mu g/ml, respectively); the docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) levels showed the same pattern (170 +/- A 50, 127 +/- A 27, and 126 +/- A 35 mu g/ml, respectively). In both the L-AF and IHD-AF groups, the EPA levels in patients with persistent and permanent AF were higher than those in patients with paroxysmal AF (L-AF 131 +/- A 74 vs. 105 +/- A 51 mu g/ml; IHD-AF 82 +/- A 28 vs 70 +/- A 33 mu g/ml). Multivariate analysis showed that cases of AF were associated with higher levels of EPA but not DHA. In this Japanese population study, the EPA and DHA levels in patients with L-AF were higher than those in normal subjects. In particular, the EPA level was associated with the incidence of AF.     A dehydrated space-weathered skin cloaking the hydrated interior of Ryugu

    Without a protective atmosphere, space-exposed surfaces of airless Solar System bodies gradually experience an alteration in composition, structure and optical properties through a collective process called space weathering. The return of samples from near-Earth asteroid (162173) Ryugu by Hayabusa2 provides the first opportunity for laboratory study of space-weathering signatures on the most abundant type of inner solar system body: a C-type asteroid, composed of materials largely unchanged since the formation of the Solar System. Weathered Ryugu grains show areas of surface amorphization and partial melting of phyllosilicates, in which reduction from Fe3+ to Fe2+ and dehydration developed. Space weathering probably contributed to dehydration by dehydroxylation of Ryugu surface phyllosilicates that had already lost interlayer water molecules and to weakening of the 2.7 µm hydroxyl (–OH) band in reflectance spectra. For C-type asteroids in general, this indicates that a weak 2.7 µm band can signify space-weathering-induced surface dehydration, rather than bulk volatile loss

    Rapid Separation and Concentration of Food-Borne Pathogens in Food Samples Prior to Quantification by Viable-Cell Counting and Real-Time PCR

    Buoyant density gradient centrifugation has been used to separate bacteria from complex food matrices, as well as to remove compounds that inhibit rapid detection methods, such as PCR, and to prevent false-positive results due to DNA originating from dead cells. Applying a principle of buoyant density gradient centrifugation, we developed a method for rapid separation and concentration following filtration and low- and high-speed centrifugation, as well as flotation and sedimentation buoyant density centrifugation, for 12 food-borne pathogens (Salmonella enterica, Escherichia coli, Yersinia enterocolitica, Campylobacter jejuni, Vibrio cholerae O139, Vibrio parahaemolyticus O3K6, Vibrio vulnificus, Providencia alcalifaciens, Aeromonas hydrophila, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Clostridium perfringens) in 13 different food homogenates. This method can be used prior to real-time quantitative PCR (RTi-qPCR) and viable-cell counting. Using this combined method, the target organisms in the food samples theoretically could be concentrated 250-fold and detected at cell concentrations as low as 10(1) to 10(3) CFU/g using the RTi-qPCR assay, and amounts as small as 10(0) to 10(1) CFU/g could be isolated using plate counting. The combined separation and concentration methods and RTi-qPCR confirmed within 3 h the presence of 10(1) to 10(2) CFU/g of Salmonella and C. jejuni directly in naturally contaminated chicken and the presence of S. aureus directly in remaining food items in a poisoning outbreak. These results illustrated the feasibility of using these assays for rapid inspection of bacterial food contamination during a real-world outbreak

    Computational studies on prion proteins: effect of Ala(117)-->Val mutation.

    Molecular dynamics calculations demonstrated the conformational change in the prion protein due to Ala(117)-->Val mutation, which is related to Gerstmann-Sträussler-Sheinker disease, one of the familial prion diseases. Three kinds of model structures of human and mouse prion proteins were examined: (model 1) nuclear magnetic resonance structures of human prion protein HuPrP (125-228) and mouse prion protein MoPrP (124-224), each having a globular domain consisting of three alpha-helices and an antiparallel beta-sheet; (model 2) extra peptides including Ala(117) (109-124 in HuPrP and 109-123 in MoPrP) plus the nuclear magnetic resonance structures of model 1; and (model 3) extra peptides including Val(117) (109-124 in HuPrP and 109-123 in MoPrP) plus the nuclear magnetic resonance structures of model 1. The results of molecular dynamics calculations indicated that the globular domains of models 1 and 2 were stable and that the extra peptide in model 2 tended to form a new alpha-helix. On the other hand, the globular domain of model 3 was unstable, and the beta-sheet region increased especially in HuPrP

    Relationships of Radiation Dose Indices with Body Size Indices in Adult Body Computed Tomography

    We investigated the relationships between radiation dose indices and body size indices in adult body computed tomography (CT). A total of 3200 CT scans of the thoracic, abdominal, abdominopelvic, or thoraco-abdominopelvic regions performed using one of four CT scanners were analyzed. Volume CT dose index (CTDIvol) and dose length product (DLP) were compared with various body size indices derived from CT images (water-equivalent diameter, WED; effective diameter, ED) and physical measurements (weight, weight/height, body mass index, and body surface area). CTDIvol showed excellent positive linear correlations with WED and ED. CTDIvol also showed high linear correlations with physical measurement-based indices, whereas the correlation coefficients were lower than for WED and ED. Among the physical measurement-based indices, weight/height showed the strongest correlations, followed by weight. Compared to CTDIvol, the correlation coefficients with DLP tended to be lower for WED, ED, and weight/height and higher for weight. The standard CTDIvol values at 60 kg and dose increase ratios with increasing weight, estimated using the regression equations, differed among scanners. Radiation dose indices closely correlated with body size indices such as WED, ED, weight/height, and weight.
