Background: Pregnancy is a special but often stressful time. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated this stress. Clinical trials have demonstrated the safety of COVID-19 vaccines for pregnant and lactating women, leading to WHO approval. Consequently, the Bangladesh Government has initiated a vaccination campaign for all expectant mothers to protect them from COVID-19. This study aimed to assess the clinical status of COVID-19-vaccinated pregnant women. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out at Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology in Combined Military Hospital, Dhaka Cantonment, Bangladesh, spanning August to November 2021. The study included 50 pregnant women who had received COVID-19 vaccinations, selected through purposive sampling. Data analysis and dissemination were performed using MS Office tools. Results: The study found that the average age was 19.2±10.8 years, with 66% falling into the 25-35 age group. About 50% had a normal BMI, while 22% were overweight (BMI: 25.0-29.9 Kg/m2). Hypertension and diabetes were present in 16% and 12% of cases, respectively. Among the 50 pregnant women, 40% were nulliparous, and 60% were multiparous; in most of the cases (54%), multigravidity (1-5) was found. Vaccination distribution was 28% in the 1st trimester, 54% in the 2nd, and 18% in the 3rd trimester. Conclusions: COVID-19 vaccination rates are notably higher among pregnant women aged 25-35. The frequency of normal BMI among COVID-19-vaccinated pregnant women is satisfactory. Most pregnant women opt for COVID-19 vaccination during their second trimester

Caesarean myomectomy which had traditionally been discouraged has recently frequently employed to remove myoma at the time of caesarean section. If myomectomy during caesarean delivery become a wide spread. Practice, it could potentially eliminate multiple surgeries for both indications. So, we decided to do caesarean myomectomy for dual indications. This was a prospective study was done in different private clinic in Rasjhahi from January 2012 to 2015. Total 20 pregnant women of different size fibroid were included in the study. Patients evaluated by age, Parity gestational age, any difficulty during operation, a blood loss during surgery and post operative complications. 20 cases were included in the study. There is no maternal mortality and as well as perinatal mortality.TAJ 2016; 29(1): 7-

Association of Socio-demographic Attributes with Mothers Knowledge regarding Childhood Diarrhea

Background: Childhood diarrheal diseases have a major impact on morbidity and mortality and these deaths are due to dehydration and mismanagement or delayed management of the disease. The mothers’ knowledge in management of diarrhea is likely related to its mortality and morbidity. The study aimed to determine the association between socio demographic attributes and mother’s knowledge on childhood diarrhea. Materials and Methods:In this cross sectional analytic study, 170 mothers who had at least one child aged below five years old were selected purposively from the out-patient department of ICDDR,B, Dhaka. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire by face to face interview. The level of knowledge was categorized as poor, average and good. Univariate and bivariate analysis were done with level of significance P<0.05. Results:The mean age of the respondents was 27 (SD=±5.6) years. Among them 46.5% were educated up to primary level and 47% had average monthly income between 5001 and 10000 taka. In the case of accessibility to mass media, 20% were found who never watch TV, 75.9% participants were found who never listen to radio, and 87.6% were found who never read newspaper. Despite the level of average knowledge was 59.5% but the proportion of the level of good knowledge was 17% among the respondents. Socio-demographic characteristics such as age, education and income (p<0.001) were significantly associated with mothers knowledge. Conclusion:The mothers had inadequate knowledge about diarrhea and their socio-demographic parameters are strongly associated with mother’s knowledge regarding diarrhea

Thin Layer Chromatographic Analysis of Food Colorants from Three Morphotypes of Annatto (Bixa orellana L.)

This article describes a simple solvent extraction method for the extraction of colorants from the three morphotypes such as, (Morphotype-1 (M1), Morphotype-2 (M2), and Morphotype- 3 (M3) of Annatto (Bixa orellana L.) seeds, and their separation, vivid, and qualitative demonstration by thin-layer chromatography. Several solvent systems (hexane, chloroform, acetone, ethanol, and a mixed-solvent having composition of CHCl3/C2H5OH/CH3COOH (80:2:1)) were applied for extraction of colored components. It was observed that a large portion of colorants was extracted by chloroform. Its effluent was deep brick red in color and transparent. Furthermore, various carrier solvent systems (Benzene-Ethyl acetate) were used to separate the components from the extracts. Carrier solvent system with the ratio of 7:3 was found as superior solvent for chloroform extracts. Three colored-spots were observed for all morphotypes. Among them, the first one was yellow colored having very low polarity and the second and third spots were both redbrick colored having medium and higher polarity respectively. In addition, for M1 no colorless-spot was observed in low and medium polar systems, revealing that the amount of wax and gum were minimum in the extract and superior morphotype among the three. NADPH oxidase 4 modulates hepatic responses to lipopolysaccharide mediated by Toll-like receptor-4.

Chronic inflammation plays a key role in development of many liver diseases. Stimulation of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) by bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) initiates inflammation and promotes development of hepatocellular carcinoma and other liver diseases. NADPH oxidases contribute to LPS-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and modulate TLR responses, but whether these enzymes function in TLR4 responses of hepatocytes is unknown. In the present work, we examined the role of NADPH oxidase 4 (Nox4) in LPS-induced TLR4 responses in human hepatoma cells and wildtype and Nox4-deficient mice. We found that LPS increased expression of Nox4, TNF-α, and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). Nox4 silencing suppressed LPS-induced TNF-α and PCNA increases in human cells. The LPS-induced TNF-α increases were MyD88-dependent, and were attenuated in primary hepatocytes isolated from Nox4-deficient mice. We found that Nox4 mediated LPS-TLR4 signaling in hepatocytes via NF-ĸB and AP-1 pathways. Moreover, the effect of Nox4 depletion was time-dependent; following six weeks of repeated LPS stimulation in vivo, hepatic TNF-α and PCNA responses subsided in Nox4-deficient mice compared with wildtype mice. Therefore, our data suggest that Nox4 mediates LPS-TLR4 signaling in human hepatoma cells and murine hepatocytes and may contribute to the ability of LPS to stimulate liver pathology

Haemoperitoneum secondary to ruptured corpus luteum is a rare complication for women of reproductive life. The differential diagnosis of hemoperitoneum includes various types of acute abdomen that usually associated with acute lower abdominal pain and swelling lower abdomen. The differential diagnosis includes ruptured ectopic pregnancy, ruptured chocolate cyst, twisted ovarian tumor, pelvic inflammatory disease and pelvic peritonitis. Ruptured hemorrhagic corpus luteum is an uncommon cause of acute abdomem. Its occurrence is unknown but is likely quite frequent and without symptoms. Most cases are self limiting; enquire only observation with abdominal pain relieved with analgesics. Some need laparoscopy or laparotomy to achieve homeostasis if the patient is haemodynamically unstable
