Fluvoxamine for blonanserin-associated akathisia in patients with schizophrenia: report of five cases
BACKGROUND: Atypical antipsychotic drugs have been reported to cause fewer incidences of extrapyramidal side effects (EPS) than typical antipsychotic drugs, but adverse events such as akathisia have been observed even with atypical antipsychotic drugs. Although understanding of the pathophysiology of akathisia remains limited, it seems that a complex interaction of several neurotransmitter systems plays a role in its pathophysiology. The endoplasmic reticulum protein sigma-1 receptors have been shown to regulate a number of neurotransmitter systems in the brain. METHODS: We report on five cases in which monotherapy of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and sigma-1 receptor agonist fluvoxamine was effective in ameliorating the akathisia of patients with schizophrenia treated with the new atypical antipsychotic drug blonanserin. RESULTS: The global score on the Barnes Akathisia Scale in five patients with schizophrenia treated with blonanserin rapidly decreased after fluvoxamine treatment. CONCLUSION: Doctors should consider that fluvoxamine may be an alternative approach in treating akathisia associated with atypical antipsychotic drugs

Dental pulp stem cell factors for treating RISR
Radiation-induced skin ulceration is a frequent complication of radiotherapy for cancer treatment. Stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHEDs) can regenerate various tissues. In this study, we investigated the impact of SHED-conditioned media (SHED-CM) on radiation-induced ulceration. Mouse necks were locally irradiated with a single dose of 15 Gy of radiation. A week after the irradiation, most of the wild-type mice generated ulcer surrounded by severe erythema. Intra-venous administration of SHED-CM effectively inhibited the ulcer formation. Histological examination revealed that SHED-CM treatment inhibited radiation-induced dermal thickness and epithelial hyperplasia. SHED-CM could be a useful treatment option for radiation-induced skin ulceration
Random Walk or A Run: Market Microstructure Analysis of the Foreign Exchange Rate Movements based on Conditional Probability
Using tick-by-tick data of the dollar-yen and euro-dollar exchange rates recorded in the actual transaction platform, a "run" -- continuous increases or decreases in deal prices for the past several ticks -- does have some predictable information on the direction of the next price movement. Deal price movements, that are consistent with order flows, tend to continue a run once it started i.e., conditional probability of deal prices tend to move in the same direction as the last several times in a row is higher than 0.5. However, quote prices do not show such tendency of a run. Hence, a random walk hypothesis is refuted in a simple test of a run using the tick by tick data. In addition, a longer continuous increase of the price tends to be followed by larger reversal. The findings suggest that those market participants who have access to real-time, tick-by-tick transaction data may have an advantage in predicting the exchange rate movement. Findings here also lend support to the momentum trading strategy.
